I use the OS Bubbless clunk and a header tank because I think introducing any kind of foam or fibre into the fuel system is asking for trouble at some point down the line.

Glad to hear the bubbless clunk sorted it for you.

What HV Brushless servos? Align BL700H and Align BL750H?
Hi guys,

Well I'm doing my head in with the choices available. I'm after a set of brushless servos for cyclic and tail. I would have gone JR but they do not offer brushless which I like on the Logo 600. I am going to run 2S Lipo direct, unfortunately my current Spektrum servos are not rated for this which is a shame as they seem to work great otherwise.

I'm looking at the new Align (Align BL700H and Align BL750H) ones mainly now which are the same as the Savox SA02271SG and Savox SB-2272SG.

It seems Kyle Dahl ran them on his XXtreme for while but he's now running JR, probably because he is with JR (just guessing!).

The specs are by far the highest of any servo but I hear they're very power hungry - not such a problem with 2S lipo plugged right into VBar though I guess!

What are peoples thoughts on them?

Try a new plug and also make sure your Align starter is fully charged. Mine will not start my new 105 unless it's fully charged.

How are you igniting the plug?

Thanks for your reply, I think this is what I am going to have to do, a compromise... It's a shame there doesn't appear to be another way (unless I'm missing something!).

You're right with it enabled the spool up is nuts even in normal mode with a slow ramp up, as soon as it hits 50% the gov kicks in with bail out recovery and it is nuts!

Has anyone managed to get auto bailout to work with a nitro heli?
I don't know what I'm doing wrong I have spent most of the afternoon trying to get my auto bailout to work with my G4. Has anyone managed to get auto bailout to work with a nitro heli?

I have tried combined channels which Mikado recommend I found this was the worst option, and bailout would never activate unless throttle hold was set plenty above idle.

Separate channels is better, but it appears bailout is always on, so you have to go to normal mode to spool up otherwise it would be a nutty bailout spool up every time.

I have read through many of Mikado's English but not quite English guides, all of MrMels videos but none seem to mention how to set-up auto bailout to actually work with a nitro unless I am mistaken.

Very frustrated with V-Bar which is the complete opposite of my normal experience I was looking forward to flying most of today .

My dream is to have a flat line or V curve in every mode with the only way to turn off the motor is with throttle hold, just how I have all my electric models.

Cheers,

Laurence

The only problem with them is the vertical thrust force they put on the bearings.

I guess the answer is with the slightly larger Logo SX main gear, which is pretty much what Mikado told me as well - not that it's any help at all in the many months until it's released.

Mikado Support:
We recommend to fly with 10s Lipos and counter bearing and a pitch of 100 in VBar setup. This will be 12 degree collective.
Maximum headspeed should be at max. 2250-2300 rpm.

If you don´t want to change your batteries, we have a new main gear soon which is 2cm wider and also a new designed counter bearing.

the motors and batteries will be stronger and stronger every year, so we had to design the SX.

And the LOGO 600 is still a 10s helicopter. 12s provides too much power and you can fly it on your own risk without zero warranty.
This will NOT work properly.

I have already written what are the limits for the 600.

2250 headspeed with 623mm blades or 2300 headspeed with 603mm blades.
12 degree collective.
counter bearing
And a good hand on stick management. Collective and cyclic.

If you want more, wait for the new SX parts.

If you have further questions please call us and speak with Ralf on the phone. I have showed him your email.
Yet people on 10S are still stripping gears and it's just as powerful as 12S.

In the meantime I will just have to keep replacing main gears, hopefully it will not happen in competitions.

I wish Mikado would sort out the roundness of main gears. I emailed them but all they seemed concerned about was the fact that I'm running 12S and have "bad collective management".

Logos are great helis but really let down by the main gear.

I wish they could make the QC tighter on the main gears to take the level of quality up to the rest of the heli.

I use the Nimbus sunglasses from Model Glasses too.

I've had Oakleys which I found were more interested in making up fancy words in their product info pages then actually making decent sunglasses.

I wanted Maui Jims but I found them hard to come across here so I ended up just buying a pair of Ray Ban's for day to day use and Nimbus sunglasses for flying, which are excellent. They're impact proof, decentered, come with many different colour lenses and keep wind out great.

Ray Ban's look superb but they're awful for flying as due to the flat shape they glare from any sun behind.

Unless you're running silly crazy power motors in your Logo 600s you do not need the thicker main gear and motor pinion...

Sounds like it's more useful for the Logo 600SE.

With 95's and around 2100rpm the tail kicks on hard pitch, I think it may be due to the Kontronik Jive aggressive governor but either way larger tail blades should help...

Guess I've been lucky, I have ran grease in my Logo for a year or two, same one way since I got it, 100's of flights.

For me the reason is oil migrates easy, if there is no oil I don't think the metal against metal wear will be any good.

For easy to get to places with metal to metal friction, such as the tail slider I use oil, but I oil that every few flights.

It would be nice to know what Mikado themselves recommend.

As for belt tension just pull reasonably tight and tighten.

Logo 600 SX with 105mm tail blades ok?
Hi all,

I read that the 600 SX is going to have a stronger tail (new hub and bolts I think?).

I take it that this means running 105mm tail blades will be safe, as a lot of people risked it with the old design - mostly without issues.

The Logo 600 tail is great, just during hard pitch changes I feel that maybe a larger size would help.

Cheers,

Laurence

For the DX7 a Li-Fe pack would be a better choice, if you use a Li-Po the voltage will be too high.

Newer Spektrum transmitters have the option to run a Spektrum Li-Po pack which contain a built in safety circuit board which balances and prevents over charge / discharge of the pack. These can also handle the higher voltage.

The main advantage of Li-Fe and Li-Po is the capacity and very, very low self discharge rates, you're talking many, many hours (if not weeks) before charging.

I didn't get a chance to vote but I also flipped from nose in upright to tail in inverted. So I felt better hovering tail in inverted for a very long time. Now I like hovering nose in more inverted, go figure lol...

Edit: Nope! I remember now, first I done tail in rolls to inverted from tail in upright, then I moved to nose in upright to inverted tail in.

Blade 450 X out of the box with no adjustments 3D flight!
Hi all,

I received a Blade 450 X this week. I managed to record a few flights yesterday before the rain, the only problem was that my current 3S packs are all over 3 years old and with 100+ cycles on each. These packs are not much good on my Trex 450 Pro but with the Spektrum AR7200BX flybarless system and low weight of the Blade 450 X I will be able to get a few more flights yet out of them.

I started off with 450 sized models and flew them for two years or so before purchasing a larger helicopter, I have always loved this size for their nimble response, no hassle and low cost. It's nice to see over the years how the size class has progressed.

Watch at YouTube

Watch at YouTube

This was out of the box with no adjustments at all, the only thing I did was remove the horizontal fin and cut the top off the vertical one as I dislike tail fins on a 3D heli.

This helicopter feels and flys very light, it is super stable but while still having a super fast roll/flip rate. I'm actually just using the manual's recommend settings for my Spektrum DX8. I haven't even messed with the tail gain settings but it seems to hold just fine, using a sub-micro tail servo seems unusual on a 450 to me but this is a great weight saving measure. The flybarless also helped a lot in the wind, my flight case blew over but this heli stood a much better chance than 450's usually do. I found the same when I converted my Logo 500 to flybarless.

I can't wait to try it out with some new packs, these ones are really past their best.

To sum it up, I feel that it is amazing how well a heli can perform in 3D flight straight out of the box.

Cheers,

Laurence

I posted the same thing a while back, no idea why this change was made, and was frustrated as I broke the frame parts which hold the boom in as I was not used to it sitting so far out in the tail case.

Absolutely no notice at all and I can't see any reason for this.

It's very hard to check belt tightness now.

Guess we should just break out the pipe cutters...

The belt is the same length so no difference other than that you can no longer check belt tightness.

When you get used to how good Logo parts are it's quite disappointing to see something become "worse", my view anyway.

I emailed Mikado about this a while back and their response was:

"Hi Laurence,

this is OK. You can use this. The length varies a little bit.

Best regards,
Daniel Simmering
MIKADO"

I had said:

"The length is about 1.5cm longer than it says on the package and my previous Mikado Logo 600 boom"

Thanks for the comments guys, it's nice to see some points from another view and makes it more worthwhile for me.

The plan is to have 4 mCPX's bound to my DX8 and to switch model memory, hopefully we can have someone's assistance to plug the battery in - or perhaps we will find another way which is safe.

As for lighting and sound effects - great idea I was struggling to see the model sometimes but now I have painted the canopy it is easier to see, perhaps we could look into more lighting options such as UV effects.

The point you made about other dangerous stuff is actually very true - everyone is well aware of the danger of the blades and I have told Nina many times that the blades are dangerous I think she is sick of me now .

Nina was after a helicopter look - I did suggest a quad as it would be more ideal for the type of flying but as the name suggests it has to be a helicopter .

I can't wait to get my hands on a V2 mCPX to try.

I checked out a lot of copyright free, free music and I think this was the most fitting, there isn't a massive choice but a big thanks for the people that do offer this.

Cheers guys.

Nina posted on some UK helicopter forums asking for help. The funds are simply going to this project, not quite sure where you got "making money" from.

"Copter" Dance Project (work in progress)
Hi guys,

I just thought I would let you know about a helicopter dance project I have been helping out with called "Copter".

We are learning a little more about both of the sides that are working in synergy. The differences in the terminology that is used has especially been fun!

I am helping out by piloting the mCPX's which are being used, the plan is to use around four mCPX's all set up on my Spektrum DX8 so the flight can be virtually seamless.

It has generated quite a bit of interest in the dance community and I always like to see members of the public who have never seen a "proper" remote control helicopter fly. I hope this brings more awareness and members to the hobby.

A rehearsal video from our 6th fly together can be found here:

Watch at Vimeo

I realise the mCPX did not fly too much in this video but it is the only preview video we have currently.

Project Description:

A truly ‘ethereal’ performance: contemporary choreographer Nina
Kov's upcoming work replaces a dancer with a model helicopter.

LONDON, February 2012
-*
'Copter' is set to be a 15-minute
contemporary dance piece, an unusual duet between a radio controlled
helicopter and a dancer. French-Hungarian choreographer Nina Kov’s
aim is ‘to bring a fresh production to both the modelling and dance
world’.

The idea came about at a house party where some RC enthusiast
friends were flying helicopters around the room, when the
choreographer started dancing with them.

Controlling the helicopter is UK’s 3D intermediate champion Laurence
Gough. He says he has had to take his skills to a new level - working
his miniature aircraft like a puppeteer, in an effort to make it appear
as an animate, conscious creature.

The rehearsals are underway, with a premier set for July 2012. The
choreography will be then shot as a short dance film.

The company is looking for support from their fans, friends and future
audiences. Increasingly common among independent artists, they are
using crowd funding website indiegogo.com to raise $5000 from
micro-contributions by 16 February. Any funds raised will be matched
by Stream Arts Greenwich.

Help us make COPTER come true! -- IndieGoGo

A teaser trailer of the project can also be found at the above link.

Nina Kov is a French born choreographer. Her works have been shown
at The Place in London, the National Dance Theatre in Budapest and
other venues internationally.

Nina's website can be found at: Nina Kov -

Cheers,

Laurence

Problem solved! Haha... Shame it makes the heli fly crap... But yes this is the main concern for me when flying with nitros, you really have to keep an eye on the feel of the heli for any loss in power.

Telememtry systems help out a great deal as you can have a vibrate and tone alert when the motor speed drops.

I would leave mine at after flight state of charge and then just charge up when needed as I never fly more than two weeks apart.

I think storage charge is more for many weeks or even months out of use.

Although I would not leave packs fully charged for more than week or two as this is a quick way to weaken them, then they should be discharged to around 50-80%.

Hi,

That should be a good setup it will not be very powerful, at least looking at the motor specs, and the 80A ESC might get quite warm if you do hard flying.

You might want to check on the BEC output for that ESC, I think it is 4A but please can you confirm if it is on the package or manual?

The mesh could also be too tight or slightly off causing it to melt (if it wasn't because of too high backlash)

With the Logo 600 SE there is no room for error, perhaps it is best to use a counter bearing for this SE model.

Make sure the arrows are in line perfectly with each other looking from the side, you are also after no backlash on the 600SE, but not tight either, it does take some time...

It used to be easy to check belt tension by using your little finger and pushing the belt up from under the tail case, if it goes past half way you know it was to loose.

Now for some reason (no idea why) Mikado extended the tail boom quite a bit and you can no longer check the belt tension this way. I'm normally pleased with Mikado's slight revision on some parts but this is not a step in the right direction.

I use wrongler's method to change belt tightness.

Blade noise please, no high pitch mechanical noises or chainsaw of nitro sounds covering everything!

One of the reasons why I love flying my Logo!

I love the sound of nitro when the throttle is varied like in planes or cars, and the idle noise but not running in helis..

What ESC do you have?

If you have a governed ESC then you want to keep it below 90% at the most to give the ESC headroom throttle to up the power under load.

Kontronik ESCs run very efficient even down to 50% or so.

As for skid stops I would not recommend these unless you are taking off and landing on a hard surface - even then I wouldn't run them. These prevent sliding and instead the heli could tip over.

To use 11ms on DSM2 you have to select the high speed option in V-Bar - which is risky to use on the non DSMX2 satellites (has a warning) from what I have read, if I am correct.

It seems nice at first but man I do not like it, for me it takes away almost everything the V-Bar is about. Without it the heli seems a lot more locked in with the controls.

It is still insanely fast without it.

Why simulate something worse?

I left it on for a while at the lowest default setting then after turning it off just so much better for me and my flying style.

Hi guys,

I am thinking about upgrading my transmitter to a DX8 or DX7SE.

Regarding the 11ms latency vs 22ms of the DX7 would the full size V-Bar be able to use the 11ms latency with the latest firmware?

I did a search but couldn't find a clear answer and they were all old posts.

Sorry if this is common knowledge.

Same setup as mine. You can get a good 4:30 mins of hard 3D or up to 7 minutes of 3D and more for sport flying.

I'm using the following:

Scorpion 4035-500kv v3 on 11T

3500mAh Optipower 2x 6S

Kontronik Jive 80+ HV with heatsink and slave cable

You can use from 50% headspeed to 90%.

Logo 600 3D with V-Bar.

Kontronik ESCs are the highest performance ESCs on the market and take a few minutes to set-up. They also have a top quality built in BEC.

As for the motor, Scorpion or Kontronik, take your pick. Kontronik motors seem to be slightly more efficient.

What's next?

Next generation batteries that have a better cycle life and a little more robust to abuse. That is my only wish current battery tech is very good with the better brands but the best improvement area to be made I feel.

Oh and I think there will be advances in flight time alarms based on mAh out, I know there are a few systems out there but I am hoping this becomes more mainstream.

I like them how there are - there are many designs of Radix blades out there.

I also think Radix blades are probably the most sexy of them all, but those new EDGE SE ones do look very pretty.

They are already plenty visible enough in the air, as long as they have bright white tips I am happy.

Of course more choice is always nice but not without the addition of extra cost I would imagine.

For a mCPX or below while ideally it shouldn't be flown above anyone I've seen it happen and it really wouldn't hurt a fly if power is stopped before any impact.

I think in any case flying above the public is a dumb idea...

You would just get 4 mins with that (depending on headspeed) but it will be quite stressfull on the packs 3300mAh or above I say.

I don't see a problem with it - as long as all safety rules are followed and common sense.

Not to say Philip is wrong or anything but I would personally just run anti-static wires from the tail case, to the boom and then from the boom to the motor mount (check continuity from tail shaft to motor mount).

And yes the Logo 600 SE excels at a lower headspeed, if you want really fast smack then just get the Logo 600.
