People have been doing this for a long time.
It's more important the heli feels the same both ways, than the pitch gauge numbers, it's a good starting point, also there is not any flight stress on the machine at that time.

We were about to run an rc boat in a lake and this ranger looking guy said we can't.

Then he pulls out a gun and fires a whistling bullet-flare thing.

That scared off some birds. Then he said he spends hundreds of dollars to do that so the birds won't eat the trout.

Then he asks if our boat would scare any birds off ..

The way a person flys has a big effect on this.

Well with these modern heli's with the virtual flybar, the advantage is mechanically a simpler heli with less slop and weight and air drag, but electronics wise heavier and more expensive.

The most smoke comes from gasser (gasoline) engines with diesel or smoke fluid injected in the muffler. Pre heating is an improvement too.

4 stroke glow, are next best,

2 stroke glow fuel are worst.

This is based on the exhaust temp.

Towerhobby . com had some smoke cartridges, there are some special safety procedures to follow with that ...

Tips for flying in the wind
Caliber1 17 3739 06-07-2006 08:19 PM
robhurlin
Torkroll

rrApprentice

Bakersfield Ca

Couple of real basic ones.

(1) Stand up-wind, your back to the wind. Heli is downwind.
This is better for flips, kaos, etc, low and close.
Any tight low 3d. It won't get blown over your head this way.
(hard to fly when it's above you).

(If you only are learning hover, then instead just keep the heli pointing at the wind).

(2) Auto into the headwind always.

Bakersfield Ca

It's a good question.

A 50 can have the same power to weight, and be more nible (or less).

A 90 weighs more and so is affected less by wind, and carries higher on vertical moves, takes more time to stop, and slide back down.

(It follows this law more: All bodies in motion tend to stay in motion, all bodies at rest tend to stay at rest).

So it looks and feels different flying.

Auto's and aerobatic auto's are generally better with a bigger heli too.

If you want to be daring with an rc helicopter do it by nearly hitting the ground away from people.

We don't care how many heli's hit the ground far away from people.

DO NOT let the spinning rotors get near anyone including yourself.
That is a TOTALLY different risk and it is not worth it.

Serious injury with a long painfull rehabilitation (or death) can be avoided easy.

When your heli only has 5 minutes of fuel it will still go up.
You want us to believe it suddenly would not go up ?
When you run low the lean condition causes it to run stronger before it runs out.

Ok so you have only been flying 1 month and you got the inverted hover going in the grass and you grab it with 1 hand while you hover with 1 hand ? Or was that grab the heli with 1 hand on each skid while you hover < No handed > and then hit throttle hold with what your foot ??

Fun story to read though.

Different alloys have different properties.

I think it is very wrong to put titanium which is scratch sensitive and hard and brittle in the wrong places in a heli. The spindle needs a metal that will bend and not break. This is very important for safety.

Very hardened metals act like glass.

Its a shame that some people want carbon or Ti because its "cool" when it actually is the wrong material to use on that item.

shame shame shame

Looks like he got the wings level, started banking to the left but he thought it was banking to the right.

Thats what you get for flying a silver plane on a dark cloudy day. Disorientation.

So If you watch it and think it is banking right, you too would give it left aileron (BAD !!).

This is assuming there was not an equpment failure, and that the pilot was seeing a similar viewpoint as that camera is.

I would like to hear what the pilot / crew said happened.

Safety rules number 7 and 8 were violated here.

7. Always charge LiPo cells/packs where no harm can result, no matter what happens.
8. Never charge a cell/pack in a model. A hot pack may ignite wood, foam or plastic.

From :

http://www.dynamoelectrics.com/Lipo Safety.aspx

I read lipo's have a 2% failure rate and are considered experimental..

Electric heli's are more money than glow.
Loss of a pack sometimes is part of that cost.

This should have only been the loss of 1 of 2 packs and not the heli.

Search for LIPO safety on http://www.google.com and study and use it guys.

The YS .63 supercharged 4 cycle might be ok in the raptor 30 with about 7.5-1 gearing.

The os .52 barely flys a 30.

It would be a lot easyer to put it in a century than make a raptor 7.5-1

... also the YS might be too fat to fit

I keep reading about overheating problems with the smaller 4 cycle heli's.

Brooksnb the fear you have, is just your brain functioning properly.

Stay outta the rotor arc.
Stay well back away from any spinning rotor.
Don't shoot at the thermonuclear device.

Well if I ever do the part of the rc pilot in that situation, and you have a finger on a trigger, you are quite welcome to squeeze away

I'm glad no one was hurt and we can all learn from this near miss people. RC pilots need to pay attention to many potential dangers.
We have to respect these things.
