Hi Guys,
It has been a long time since I last posted any of our images and I guess everyone gets tired of looking at housing and commercial developments. However this time we were doing video for a conservation project that is studying Turtle and Mangrove habitat. Whilst there we flew and took some aerial shots please see attached images. This is one of the more beautiful areas of coastline on Malaysia's North East coastline.

Thanks Guys, I should say I am not so sure yet what is happening but the Spartan was super good with normal pcm)radio gear and the only thing to change is the radio gear and now it twitches. In the original form it has been flying now for more than a year with no issues so I think the spartan is ok. I will investigate further and if I find anything then I will post if not then all will be well. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Adrian, yeah man it will be along time before we fly the xdcam hahaha I intend to start and fly the ex1 (it is small and cheaper bit) to fly but not my ex3. I am also in the proceeds of starting to get my next Vario built up but with a radical design change and looking for the front mount so let us see what you come up with. I am even considering going electric but batteries and flight times with the ex1 will be a major issue I think.

Helicommand and Spartan with 2.4 gig
Hi Guys,

I have just bought a new 2.4 gig futaba 10 channel radio having flown only pcm in the past. I have 2 birds each fitted with stabilizers one being the spartan and one being the helicommand 3a Has anyone ever had any issues using either of these with the 2.4 gig frequency?

I have not yet tested my Vario gasser using the helicommand and the 2.4 but have already tried it on the my Hirobo Freya and the spartan. The Hirobo heli is trimmed and set to fly nice it hovers steady with no movement hands on stick for 3 secs then drifts a bit but when I switch on the Spartan the heli twitches all over all cyclic servos twitch very small amounts very fast so not enough to crash but not good to fly. Once I switch off the Spartan all is steady again. I never had any of this kind of activity when flying the normal pcm radio.
Any one had similar or got any suggestions?

Many thanks for your help I am just a bit new to tuning so every little help is a big help especially on this twin needle engine. I will temp the cylinder side just below the head tomorrow. But yes the smoke is a lot and it has oil running from the exhaust during the flight.
Again thanks for your help.

OS 90 Engine and Viper Head with Perry Pump
Hi Guys,

This may well be an already answered question and I know a can of worms to answer but I only need general advice if you can help me please. I have an Hirobo Freya running with an os90 engine fitted with the viper head and pump. I am trying to tune it but with the pump fitted where do you guys temp it from? as you can't touch the back plate in the conventional way. It has the 2 needle set up, one for rich and lean and the other for the return to tank. I would like to know what I should be looking for as an average temp and where to to take the temp from using an IR temp reader. Or maybe some indication of needle settings. I have never tuned the 2 needle engine before and I feel the heli is not tuned right at the moment. I am using cool power 30% low smoke fuel but putting out lots of smoke but if I touch the side of the cylinder just below the head it feels very hot.
I hope some one can help me please.

Hi guys I had a similar problem with this kind of glitch on cyclic on both my 500 and 450, in flight it would look like someone had switched the heli off and on again for a split second. I have the RX located under the battery on the nose, I moved it forward a bit about half an inch by installing a small platform and extending the distance from the back of the RX to the motor, also re routing the antennae so it is as far away from the motor as I can get it. I found what I think was the problem and that was the rx was too close to the motor. After this I have had no more glitches. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your help and suggestions, it turned out to be so simple a fix in the end. All I had to do was reset the rx and tx frequency and then the rx recognized that 8 channels were selected initially it was only seeing the 6 channels because I was asking for the 8 channels after I had set up the frequency. The rx and tx are the scanning no crystal type. Now all is ok and it works fine.

Thanks for the replies guys and sorry for the late response been out station working. To say I flew it down would be a bit of a stretch spitfire1, I would say a touch of OH sh.t and a little panic and the heli sort of shook itself all the way to the ground with a bit of quick stick movements as it got there and it landed safely but "flew" no I am afraid not. It di not however have any other damage I am pleased to say.
I took every thing to the local rep here in Malaysia and he would not even offer me a replacement all he could do was laugh and say glue it back. This if course I did not do I replaced the set up with the original plastic ones and now she is flying again.

fly bar paddles
Hi Guys,

Has anyone ever had the fly bar paddles come off in flight? I fitted a set of the white carbon paddles to my trex 500 recently , I used these because of the nice tapped metal fitting that screws on to the fly bar and not direct using the plastic fly bar paddles. All was nicely balanced and flying great until Sunday Morning whilst I was flying and this white thing seemed to come from the heli and wizzed past my ear, I thought at first I had hit something like a large butterfly or flower from the trees but the heli swung violently and then shook like crazy but fortunately I was able to land with out incident. After inspection the white carbon fly bar paddle had completely come off the metal threaded part which was still firmly attached to the fly bar. Seems like not enough adhesive but almost cost me my heli and was certainly a manufacturers defect. I approached our local supplier who laughed and said glue it back.I was convinced this should have been a warranty claim and if I had lost my heli I would nave been looking for a heli replacement. Just wondering has anyone else ever had such a problem?

The MERS unit is fast and simple. I use it on the 20, 30, 40, 400, 450 and 50D canon cameras with no problems at all.

need advice with Multiplex radio and Spartan AP2000i
I have just purchased a Multiplex Royal Evo 12 radio and fitted it to my Hirobo Freya helicopter I have all working except the spartan. I wired everything through the spartan as it supposed to be and it seems to work but in the off position on the spartan. I have not assigned the channel for the spartan just ran everything through it. When the heli is powered up the heli works as it should do with no spartan function. When I assign the channel for the spartan gain on the Multiplex radio in the servo assignment as channel 8 aux1 then assign a switch to operate it then turn on the heli the spartan refuses to come on saying no signal. As soon as I deactivate the servo assignment back off again and turn on the heli all is working again except the Spartan. Can anyone offer any suggestions to me please??

I don't know if this is relevant but I am also facing some difficulty with deshaker settings, I am not however having the same problems that you are having but I am facing the same problems when it comes to asking for help. It seems that no one is willing to share settings or offer suggestions. I have even emailed the people at virtual dub and the author of the program me.
I only want my output to be the same as my input for eg, 16.9 widescreen video HDV, to come out as 16.9 HDV or even SD in the 16.9 aspect ratio when the input is SD. Every time I deshake no matter what setting I put in it always comes out as 4.3 aspect or some strange looking aspect.

Can anyone offer any help as to what I am doing wrong??

Any ideas on how to keep the 16.9 aspect when de-shaking it?

problem with editing dont know what's going on.
I am stumped, I finally got my heli flying nice video on my small Sony A1P HDV camera but after installing the latest Adobe premier pro cs4 I cannot seem to capture the hdv video. It will only allow me to capture down converted dv. Does anyone else have this problem other than me??

My second problem is I want to run it through the virtual dub deshaker so I set it all up as instructed but the output file is always 4.3 aspect and not 16.9 widescreen as captured. I have tried all the settings that they allow but I cannot deshake and keep it as 16.9 it reverts to the square 4.3 aspect. Does anyone have similar problems and is anyone willing to share their settings with me please?

What editing software do you all use for your hdv editing? and do you use the virtual dub deshaker?

Can anyone offer any advice please.

Thanks Noobs,

Yes, done all of this last night, tested the heli as std all was ok then tested the heli with the video TX and no mount all perfect no problem then put the mount and no video TX and all still ok, tested the mount on the ground with video TX and heli (no fly) and wow mount goes crazy. as I said earlier the askman mount is perfect with the very exact same video TX this is what has me baffled. I tested my Trex 450, 500, Hirobo Freya, and the Vario Benzine all with the video TX and no issues from any of them, just the helicam solutions mount goes nuts. It is driving me nuts trying to fix it or at least get my head around the problem and understand at least what is happening.

Thanks for the reply guys I will post pictures tonight when I get back from work. The mount is a helicam solutions mount and the original video tx was a 2.4 gig tx from wirelessvideotransmitters. This died last week and I bought a local thing from a cctv shop it has no brand but is 900mhz at 500mw output I also use the same type of unit on my ask man mount at 1.2 gig and 700mw output. The askman set up has never let me down or shown any signs of interference for more than 1 year so I figured it should be fine however the 2 units both the 1.2 gig and the 900 mhz when mounted on the helicam solutions mount react badly sending the camera spinning uncontrolably 360 degress faster than the heli rotor blades.
The mount rc control is 40mhz, with the mount rc switched off you can move the active video TX any where even touching the heli rc RX and aerial with the heli switched on and not even a glimmer but as soon as you switch on the mount the heli stays good but the mount goes nuts. These RX's only seem to affect this mount, when fitted to the askman mount there is no issue so I am baffled what to look out for next. My gut feeling sort of tells me it has something to do with the aluminum on the helicam solutions mount becasue the askman is all carbon but I really am beat. Any suggestions will be appreciated right now.

I am finding this thread very interesting, I am having similar Radio issues not with the URBI but with a 1.2 gig video TX and a Helicam solutions mount.
Switch on the mount and radio gear, perfect but switch on the video TX and WOW watch your fingers, the thing spins that fast it nearly takes off. I am still trying to locate the possible cause because it does not affect my Askman mount what so ever. Nor does the video TX affect any of my 4 helis just the helicam solutions mount. The video TX that was on the mount was a 2.4 gig unit but that packed in last week so I bought the exact same unit that I have on the Askman which I would say has performed flawlessly for more than 1 year. However when I fitted it to the helicam solutions mount it went crazy I then switched them around, either one goes nuts on the Helicam solutions mount, I would really appreciate it if some one could actually suggest what to look for to get it working.

As for camera triggers I was recommended to buy the MERS switch by some guys on RR and as a result of their recommendations I did. These little units work fantastic with no lag times that I can see between shots, the images are instant, no delays and no waiting between shots. I have found these to be fantastic little units.I am triggering my 450D, 40D and new 50D canon cameras with them perfectly.
I bought the units from Hansen Hobbies who gave great service.

Finally for BLIP I can agree with some of the comments written here on RR I have found the service very poor indeed. I asked a few question a few months ago and was promised feed back which never came, then recently I emailed them to ask about the Stinger video TX and some payment info, invoices etc so I could get my company to raise the cheque but up until now no response. How to do business like this??

Radio fault or suggestions please
Hi Guys, I have the Trex500 and then Trex 450 electric helis together with a Vario Benzine and a Hirobo 90 size freya. I was always a fuel guy until I got the 450 and now the 500 I think is an awesome little m/c makes me want to change my camera ships to electric.

However the reason for this post is I fly the Benzines and the Trex's both of them using an old JR X3810 radio and JR 9 channel RX in all of them as well. Recently I noticed the Trex 450 on the ground would sometimes not respond to throttle up then all would be ok and it would fly no problems. The 500 was always flying great no worries and the benzine no problem there either. Then I fitted the Spartan AP2000 for a test run on the 450 and tipped it over (setting wrong) on the ground. At first glance all seemed ok with no damage so I spooled it up and it flew, I flew 2 batteries then in the hover at about 5 feet from the ground it started coming back at me with no response from the controls at all eventually hitting the ground and breaking up. I repaired the heli all the time still flying the 500 and the benzine with no issues. After the 450 was repaired I flew it again for a few days with no issues and then again from a hover it did the very same thing again locking out and coming straight back to me and again hitting the dirt. The very next day a friend of mine and really great pilot came to look at my 500 because it had developed what appeared to be a shiver every now and then during the flight. This we first thought was a head speed problem but after he gave it a test flight and some basic left to right movements this heli also locked out on one of the left direction movements and also about 5 feet from the ground at the same flying field, consequently also hitting the ground and needing quite extensive repairs. I am now wondering what could be the cause of this, could it be the way I laid the wiring when I built them? could it be the RX? could it be the TX? I have now changed the RX and TX for the Benzine in case I have a problem in the TX somewhere but also scared a bit to fly the 450 and the 500 again until I can find out what could be the problem. These are my first electric helis and my friend told me that the wiring has to be kept away from the motor and the esc that the wiring can cause glitching and lock out. Any suggestions??

Hi, Yes I have done that already this is why I think something not right with the Video TX. Seems strange that the signal is being radiated from the part that the aerial screws to the Video TX. This is proven when I wrap just this small area with alfoil and the signal and the interference is blocked. I always thought the signal was transmitted from the length of the rubber flexible part of the aerial and not the actual join screw part.

Thanks for that but I tried that already. It seems that the part of the aerial that connects to the tx is the culprit and that doesn't seem right to me. I will test the askman mount with this new tx tonight but the older tx on the askman is great so I am now wondering if there is a problem with this new tx. I feel very uncomfortable that 40mhtz is in conflict with 1.2 gig.

Camera mount antennae issues
I wonder if any of you guys can offer suggestions to a problem I discovered last night with my camera mount. I have a Helicam solutions camera mount it is quite old and I bought it second hand from a friend.

The Video TX that was on it packed in working last night it was on 2.4 gig and gave no issues except for last night. I bought a new video TX exactly the same as I use on my askman mount but not the same as what was on it originally which is a 1.2 gig TX and fitted it exactly where the old one was originally fitted. the Mount RC system is 40mhz. I switched on the rc for the mount (not the video TX) and all was fine, then I switched it off and switched on the Video TX (no RC for the mount). This also worked fine got good picture. Then I switched them both on together and wow, the mount went crazy spinning and twisting around, after switching off the video TX the mount settled down again. I tried many things to try to find out where the interference was coming from, moving the wires from power supply and video, leads etc but no change then I masked the Video TX with alfoil obviously no signal but I was trying to identify if the power leads or the actual video TX was the cause and switched on the mount rc, all was ok. Then I wrapped just the video TX but left the aerial uncovered and repeated the exercise again it again went crazy. Then I only wrapped the aerial from the video TX and it was stable again but no video signal of course. I then wrapped just the wider part of the aerial where it screws on to the video TX itself but left the flexi part of the aerial uncovered and the actual video TX uncovered. All was again fine but still no video picture at the monitor. I then removed the aerial completely from the video TX still all ok but again no picture. I then screwed the aerial onto the video TX a few turns only about 20% or may be less a bit until the camera mount started to twitch then I backed it off about half a turn and all was stable and got picture.

I am now worried about range but will test that tonight after work but I am baffled why this is so much problem as I said earlier I run the exact same system on the ask man mount 40mhtz on the RC for the mount and 1.2 gig for the video TX and actually the exact same video TX with no issues at all. Can anyone offer any suggestions what is the cause and what would be the remedy? I am not keen not to have the aerial fully screwed in its rightful place in case it comes off.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi rroback,

Just a small correction for your, Delrin and HDPE are not the same, Delrin is actually Poly Acetal and HDPE is High density polyethylene they are as different as black and white. Both have excellent qualities but different. Just thought I would clarify this.

help with setting the Trex500
Hi Guys,
I recently purchased this TREX 500 and I must say initially I was quite impressed with the build and how it flies. However after getting used to it a little I notice some issues which I am struggling to settle.

The heli occasionally shakes from side to side like a shiver, but I just read another thread and may be head speed I think.

Another problem is every time I switch it on to fly the trims are way off, I fly, set the trims so she hovers nicely (no forward or side to side drifting) with almost no stick inputs then fly around, run out the battery then put it away until next time. Then the next time I fly the thing, the trims are way off and I have to re trim about 6-8 clicks in either forward, back or left to right direction. After trimmed she flies nice again but then again the next time I fly I have to go through the whole exercise again. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Finally holding an altitude position, I have another problem and that is I can't hold it say at 10 feet from the ground with out it either rocketing skyward then after reducing the stick it drops like a brick and I have to give it more stick, it settles for about 5 secs then rockets skyward again. I am finding it difficult to settle it to a very stable hover with out this up and down motion.

I fly other bigger helis and don't have this prob and as this is one of the smallest helis I own I guess I am certainly not used to it being so light.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Stephen

How much can a Trex500 lift
I have just bought the Trex 500 heli and I must say it is a lovely m/c to fly. I am building a real light weight camera mount and was wondering does anyone have any idea what sort of payload this heli can lift?

Thanks guys, I don't use the 40D on live view mode any more. I used to use it but found the infinity setting was not quite focused I needed to be just a fraction before infinity even for 300feet pics. I use the canon 10-22 wide angle lens and a small cctv camera for my down link, I only want to trigger autofocus and take the pic so I guess any of the suggestions can do this. I will look at the MER thanks so much for your advice.

camera triggers
Hi Guys,

I have been into AP for quite some time now using the 20, 30 and 40D Canon cameras for my work. I have been triggering these all of this while using what to some may be a bit primitive and mechanical, that is by simply taking an old electronic cable release and cutting off the button end, plugging the connector end into the camera then using a servo with a brass end on the servo arm to touch the two wires from the cable release wire together to trigger the camera when activated via the TX. This system of mine has worked for many years but now I am looking for a more modern way to trigger this camera say electronically direct from the camera via the Tx to remove the added weight of the servo and the risk of malfunction.
I was wondering if you would share with me what you guys are using to trigger your Canon 40D cameras?

Best Regards,

Stephen

Finally flying
After months of waiting and rebuilding then major engine problems my Vario Benzine finally flew last week end. I just want to thank Mr Bill Meador from here on RR for his great help in getting this engine set up and running again. After spark plug and ignition issues, Clutch dragging issues and then carby problems it all came together in the end.

Thank you Bill.

Please see pic attached.

Thanks for the reply, I also am now thinking the engine is too rich when running there is a lot of oil running out of the exhaust and not a mist in the smoke. I might try to lean it out this wekend.

Thanks guys,

Yes Hatori pipe, I was wondering why the engine is running so much oil out of the back, my friend tells me he thinks the engine is running just fine as far as power and performance goes also the motor is not burning hot. It is a real can of worms getting it correct and no one seems to want to comment, it is just so full of variables I understand. I just feel that oil mist in the exhaust smoke is fine but oil running out in steady a stream well I think that might just be too much.

Tail twitch
I have the Hirobo Freya running a Os 91 c spec with pump and Viper head. The rotor head, clutch and fan have all bee dialed in and run very smooth no apparent shake or nodding at spool up or spool down so very nice so far. However in flight I am experiencing side to side twitching in the tail to the point where the heli gives a bit of a shiver occasionally but mostly it is twitching side to side. This twitch is not a continuous twitch but sort of comes and goes but very often. It goes sort of bang bang a couple of sharp twitches to the right then bang bang to the left. through out the flight. The gyro used to be a 601 but for testing I changed it to 401 but still the same at all gain sttings from low to high. It never used to do this but since the overall and re balance it does it all of the time, can anyone give me some suggestions??

engine question
I do not know if this is a stupid question but I am sort of baffled a bit and wondered of someone can give me a bit of direction.
I have the Hirobo Freya running with a new OS 91 c spec with pump and viper head. It has now about 60 or so flights on it from new. The engine temp on landing after spool down is about 200degrees and you can hold your finger in the side of the engine for 10 secs it is very warm but not to say hot. The engine seems to have plenty of power and flies really well. During flight there is lots of oil running out from the exhaust and this is my concern, I want to reduce this oil as it is every where. If it was just a fine mist in the exhaust it would not be so bad but it is literally running out during the flight. I am concerned that if I lean it out it might spoil the engine as it feels and sounds good but the oil seems to be too much. Any suggestions? The fuel is Cool Power 30% LS (low smoke) however there is still tons of smoke.

Many thanks for your replies, I am currently using 30% nitro cool power the supposedly low smoke version but it is still quite bad at the correct engine running temp. I don't know if I can import fuel into Malaysia so I might be kinda stuck.

I am looking at modifying my OS 91c spec engine to produce less smoke for my aerial photography. One of the ideas I had was to replace the conrod bushes with roller or ball bearings this way I could in theory run a fuel mixture with less oil content in it. Do any of you guys know anyone that makes custom engine parts or custom conrods? Has anyone ever done this before?

I have an Hirobo Freya with os 91 engine installed and recently I bought a Multiplex Royal evo 12 TX with synthesizer module and Synthesizer RX and found I was also getting huge numbers of glitches and frame losses on the spartan AP. When I changed back to the original JR radio I have no frame losses or glitches. I tried many different configurations whilst trouble shooting and eventually believe the Spartan AP to be ok and have now sent back the TX and RX to Multiplex USA for checking.

Seeing the heli? well we have a 3 man team, actually 2 men and my wife haha. We have a pilot , a cameraman and a spotter with a pair of bino's when we go to extreme altitudes, but this is not so often and only happens in special cases. Of course I also have the Spartan auto pilot for that extra bit of safety as well.

Thanks guys for your comments yes they were very happy with the pics all 150 of them. You are also correct Torsten at this altitude a full size heli would and could do this no problem but the cost involved for flying the full size heli at these sites was more than the BP people wanted to be bothered with even though my costs were not too far behind the full size guys. But yes I also gave them a varied selection of different altitudes and views so I guess we were more flexible than the full size guys could have been. Yes I also had some issues with the smoke but not that many in the end fortunately. I agree with your comments about the 40D and the delay. It seems like forever when you take the pic and then the screen goes off for a while, while it downloads the image to the card and then regains back the signal and after a flicker or two it's back again, it can be a bit frustrating if you are planning a series of shots for a Pano result. However I still like the camera, but I'm hanging out to see the latest canon that can auto focus whilst in live view. I have to pre-focus currently just a fraction short of infinity and then use F8 for a greater depth of field to get consistent sharp pics. I am also thinking of using my 5D as well as an AP camera but need the viewfinder camera to see the image this will be next because I like the full size sensor that the 5D has. The inherent 1.6x magnification in the 40D is great for my other work as a wildlife photographer but for AP stuff it is a bit of a bind when you cannot get those wide shots. But again thanks for you comments.

Turtle Beaches in Malaysia
I was recently asked by BP if I could help them with images of turtle nesting beaches here in Malaysia. It seems that BP is not only into petrol they also sponsor wildlife conservation here in Malaysia and the sea turtles are one of their sponsored projects. They wanted me to show the actual nesting beaches and the proximity to the land development in shore. I shot more than 300 pics in total over 4 days in 2 different locations in the Peninsular Malaysia and here are a few for you guys to see. I hope you like them.
The heli is the Hirobo Freya, OS SXH 91 with Viper head, and the camera is the Canon 40 D using the live view feature suspended from an Askman mount.

Thanks guys,

So far we have tried everything suggested but the m/c specs are as follows,
Hirobo Freya
710 radix main blades
OS SXH91 with pump and viper head
had 601 giro but recently changed to 401
Hatori exhaust with 3inch silicone extension pipe to divert oil from camera mount.
The engine is tuned nicely at around 200degrees F at first landing after flight and 1900 head speed
No grumbling from the engine so I think tuned nicely
The giro has been tried at both ends of the gain high and low as well as avcs and normal.
Running Cool power 30% nitro Low Smoke version
All shafts, bearings, fan and engine renewed in Dec 2007 and Jan 2008

Tail shivers slightly side to side not constantly but intermittently but most of the flight like shake shake side to side then stops for a few seconds then shakes again side to side. I am a t a loss what to do next.

Some times I think we lose sight of what we are doing here and must decide if we are just playing around as a hobby or are really being professional offering a professional service. I agree with the comments from Torsten.
We are offering an AP service which is indeed a specialty service and we have a business to run. In my company we have a charge for the first hour then for a subsequent hour after that and then a scale leading up to a full day rate. We charge for traveling to and from the destination outside a certain predetermined radius from base. The charges are the same for everyone no matter where or what they want the pics for. After all, our job is the same we have a helicopter to fly carrying the same equipment no matter what the end use of the image is. If a guy wants a cheep image of his house then he can hire my pole cam. If people want higher altitude images from the helicopter then they are paying for the skill both from the pilot and the photographer and getting first class images from professional equipment and a professional team. All images always belong to me and my company and the customer gets a written prearranged copyright for his usage. and as was earlier said the final question at the end of the day is are you happy with the pic and then hand over the data and move on to the next one.

I have an hirobo freya 90 that I recently rebuilt with all new shafts bearings and motor. I was using the futaba 601 giro but now changed it to the 401. The problem I am having is during flight the tail twitches side to side very slightly but all the time. It seems that what ever I do I cannot make it steady which is why I changed the giro to see if that was the problem. I also have a sceadu evo that when in flight is rock solid at the tail, can anyone give any advice what to check for my tail twitching freya?? I am at a loss what to change or look at next.

Need help please
Hi Guys I need some advice and help if you can, I have spent the last 2 months completely stripping down my freya 90 and rebuilding it with almost everything possible from a new motor to the smallest bearing, this was to try to eliminate some vibes I had. Firstly I must say the heli now is super smooth from standing still through spool up right up to take off, the heli does not move even a fraction in any direction as the blades reach speed and then lift off, so it appears to be almost perfectly balanced. during flight everything seems smooth watching the fuel in the tank seems to hardly move but every now and then, well actually quite frequently the tail twitches from side to side and I cannot find out what is the cause. The giro is the futaba 601 everything else is great but this twitch is giving me the horrors especially on HDV. I can get away with stills but the video is terrible. any suggestion what to look out for or what to check??

Many thanks for your help it is my intention to try to get more lift from the nitro engine. I read so much about the gassers but I favor the nitro. The nitro is smoother than the gasser, much lighter than the gasser and if I can get longer industrial style blades with a slight s curve and then change the gear ratios on the drive I believe I will have more power to weight ratio than the gasser and then be able to lift a heavier payload for my camera work.
I am now looking for blades, the closest I can find are SAB231 blades but I need to find out where to buy the gears have you any idea??

Hi Guys I was wondering if any one can tell me what is the length of the std tail boom on the sst eagle freya? and then I heard that this helicopter has an extended tail boom can any one tell me what is the length of the longer version tail boom?
Can you buy different main drive gears for the freya? I know the std one is 95t but can you buy any others with different nos of teeth so you can change the gear ratios?
I am trying to get more lift from a sst eagle freya by using longer industrial blades and hopefully changing the gear ratios and fitting a longer tail boom. but first I must know if the boom on the heli is the std or long version.
Can anyone help with this?

Thanks for your comments and yes I should have waited until I downloaded the full version of the software so I could put it up without the watermark. But I was happy with the shot anyway. Now I have the full version so no more water mark.

Hi Paul,
I have just read your reply and as a matter of interest I have just had a very similar situation here with my 0S91 SX. During a run it started to get very hot after many runs of being really good so I stripped it down to have a look and found the piston and the sleeve were badly scored among other things. I did a search on the net and found as you said for just a few dollars more than the cost of buying new sleeve, piston, piston ring, and bearings gaskets etc for the old engine I could get a new engine complete with the viper head so this I did from RCPOWER SUPPLY in Hong Kong terrific service and great pricing.

As a matter of interest this is what I used to do when I first got my AP 2000i.
I would set the heli to hover real nice and smooth with out the AP so that I could let go the sticks for a good 5-10 secs or so then I would cal it in the air. After this I would land and on the ground with the engine idling (blades still, not moving) but the AP off I would see the position of the swash. Then I would see what happened when I flicked the switch for the AP to go on and see the reaction of the swash if it moved violently one way or another I knew the cal was way off. I would then re cal again. If it barely moved I would take off and switch it on and then trim up the difference on the sliders on the face of the radio. I did this several times until I could trust the cal and the system then I switched of the cal feature on the AP so now I don't cal anymore I only have to do minor trims at each different location. So far this has worked really well for me.
Hope this helps.

First pics after re-build
Hi Guys,

I posted a topic some weeks ago about vibration and as a result of the coments from some good people on here I went ahead and stripped the heli down. I got a friend to help and we checked everything to the point where in the end we have replaced everything except the plastic frame, this included all bearings, shafts (in tail and main) both sets of blades Tail and main and the fan this was not because they were all no good but more to the pint that we could feel wear in them so better to start again we thought. After all of this just arrived on last week end a nice new shiny OS 91 SX H ring C spec with pump engine together with the Viper head. Actually I was going to rebuild the engine because it had an oil leak and a score or two on the piston and sleeve but after checking the price of the new engine with viper head which by the way I was going to buy anyway, it turned out a better deal to get a new one with the head already fitted. This head with the 2 glow plugs has to be invaluable to us in AP if in the off chance you loose a plug in the air it is better to have a second plug running as a back up I think, anyway this is my reason for buying it, SAFETY FIRST.
We have not fitted the new engine yet but we did do one job last week after most of the new parts were fitted and the result was we still need to do some more tuning but we are getting there. For stills it is fine but for HDV not quite there yet. I have posted some pics from the last weeks shoot for you to see, hope you like them and again to all of those that offered advice thank you very much.

All the Best for 2008,

Stephen

Viper Head
Hi Guys,

I have just purchased a brand spanking new OS 91 SX C spec H ring engine complete with the Viper head and what a beauty it looks. I have not fitted it into the heli yet but I do have a couple of question for you.

First Question, Once both plugs are ignited and running and then if one fails will the other one still bring the heli home running as normal???

This was one of the reasons I bought it in the first place and I guess I should have asked this before I bought it. I do AP from my heli and the reason I wanted to use it was to give me some safety in case one plug failed and then I would have the back up to prevent me from coming downwards in a big hurry, especially with all that expensive camera stuff on board.

Second question is, do I have to actually heat the second plug every time to fire it up? or will the heat in the cylinder from the already running plug be enough to fire it up? The book says to put the glo starter on the plug to start it but a friend told me it should start on its own, which is it to be?

Thanks,

Stephen

Altitude meter
Hi Guys I just finished a shoot using the Canon 40D and I must say I am impressed. The live view works really great, it totally removes the need for using a second CCTV camera and what's more all of the viewfinder info can be displayed on the down link screen.

I have one question though I want to show the altitude also on the down link. Do you guys do this? what hardware do you use? and of course where do you get it from.

following a radio telemetry signal
I have a tricky question for you boffins out there. I work with the organization called WWF (not the wrestling) here in Malaysia and I have been asked by one of our scientists if the helicopter can be made to fly autonomously to follow a radio signal being transmitted from a radio telemetry collar. I know the heli can follow a gps signal but can it follow a signal from a vhf transmitter then log the position as a gps co-ordinate.

Thanks for your input Tim,

I have not used the JR radio but my friend uses one, I have used several futaba's personally, my current radio is the 8uhps which some say is a great radio but I have had some issues with it and now do not trust it at all which is why I am in the market to buy a new one. The other issue is I fly mode 1 and my friend flies mode 2 so this is why we cannot use the same radio to fly the heli, he uses a JR module 40mhz to fly the heli but the radio can be programmed to fly either pcm or PPM so I think as long as the two talk to each other then there would not be an issue. My other heli is currently fitted with the 40mhz PCM futaba receiver but it would not be an issue to replace this with the futaba fm receiver as I have one free and not being used. I am considering the multiplex because it has been quite highly recommended to me although I have never held one yet.
I also have an AP 200i Spartan auto pilot on the heli do you know if the Multiplex will speak to this as well?

Thanks again,

Stephen

multiplex question
I am about to change my futaba PCM TX to a nine channel but not so sure what to buy yet. I have been looking at the Multiplex royal gold evo 9 but I am not sure yet what to buy.

Is the Multiplex an FM radio?

Can you get 40mhz versions of this Tx?

If I buy the synthesizer version TX and RX will the TX still control the normal futaba FM RX?

My friend who also sometimes flies my heli uses a JR radio with the synthesizer module installed, will this radio control the Multiplex synthesizer RX and also the futaba std fm RX? (Not at the same time I know))

I know this is a catch 22 question but does anyone have any preferences between these 3 and why?

Futaba radio changing from mode 2 to mode 1
I recently changed my radio for a friend to fly my helicopter and encountered a problem, I fly mode 1 and my friend flies the mode 2. I followed the instructions from the manual and swapped the operating modes electronically at power up from the mode 1 to 2. I then opened the back of the radio and changed over the spring positions to the other side ready for the mode 2 operation and reassembled it all back again. The basic operation proved to be correct but the settings were all out for example the pitch and throttle setting was already at max position when the stick was only 3 quarters of the way up, where as in the earlier configuration it was all the way to full stick. I wonder is this normal to have to re-set the servo positions when this mode change is made? I thought that once the radio and heli was set it was just a matter of moving the springs and resetting the operating mode electronically and no further adjustment was required.

AP 2000i and 6 channel radio
Recently I changed a Futaba 6 channel radio over to the mode 2 for a friend of mine to fly my helicopter, I normally fly mode 1. I use the 8 channel futaba radio to control this and normally it works fine with the Spartan no problem. My problem is when the change was made to the 6 channel radio, the airolon servo started to twitch violently. There is no specified channel on the 6 channel radio for the spartan AP2000i so when the power is turned on the the Spartan goes to 50% gain by default and you cannot turn it off or on. We swapped the wires to prove the wires were ok, we even changed the plugs into different channels but what ever servo was plugged into the airolon output it twitched violently. If we fitted back the 8 channel radio the twitch disapeard and all worked fine. I tried the 6 channel back on the heli again but with the AP removed and all was fine too. So after checking, the radios seem ok, the wiring seems ok, the servos check out ok and the AP2000i checks out ok but when the AP2000i and the 6 channel are together they go crazy. Can anyone offer some suggestions on this what is happening? Now I am not so sure what is exactly the problem and until I do I am sort of scared to put the AP2000i back even with the 8 channel until I can understand what is actually happening.

Hope someone has the answer,

Stephen

Thanks Guys,

I have bought 4 jugs and ran one already I see less smoke a bit but I am still running rich so I need to tune it back some, I have not noticed a drop in power as yet but also not yet fitted back the camera. This was the first few flights after reassembling back my heli after the major overhaul we just performed on it to try to dampen some of the vibrations out of it. So far after a little tweaking she runs very smooth. Of course time will tell when the HDV goes back on board.

For what it is worth,

I recently fitted the AP2000i to my Hirobo freya and during the learning curve and many emails between myself and Mark Webber I realized that the easiest solution for me was not to have it set so I could go from on to off whilst in flight as you would expect. I in fact did the following steps, Calibrate the heli to a near perfect hover with out the AP2000i, then I went to cal in the air in as perfect a hover as I could achieve, I then landed and switched on the AP2000i and took off again. I then found it drifted a little both to the right and backwards in this case. This meant my hover and cal had not been perfect but rather than re-cal as I had done so many many times already I proceeded to counter the drift in flight with the in flight trim adjustments on the face of the radio this then gave me a perfect stable hover that I was very comfortable with. The gain setting for the AP2000i is set at 50%. I now have 2 settings for my heli on the radio, model 1 is without AP 2000i and the model 2 is with the AP2000i. This means if I am sport flying I go to model one and do not use at all the AP 2000i, then if I am working taking aerial photographs I fly in the model 2 mode which had the AP set to on all the time from take off to landing. This is perfect for me I have to slightly adjust the in flight trims a little at each location depending on where and what time I am working but this is simply not much more than one click out in what ever direction, then away you go perfect stability

I hope that this has been of some value for you, but one thing is for certain once it is fitted and set up which ever way you want to fly you will find it is an awesome tool.

Vibration and smoke
I own the Hirobo Freya with OS 90 engine, I use this for AP recently I found I had some vibration whilst shooting video so I decided to try to isolate this.

So far I stripped down the whole heli to just the frame, engine and fan. My direction will be to look at each item individually to try to solve the imbalance. Last night I started the engine in the frame with only the fan attached and straight away vibration can be felt it is not smooth. Although it is not shaking around the vibration is very fine but very high frequency that after a while it makes your hand feel numb. Is this normal? Should I be able to run the engine alone with fan and not feel anything?

I am replacing the main shaft and the tail rotor shaft and then checking the balance before fitting back into the frame. I will also recheck the cg and weight of the main blades before reassembly.

Is there anything else I should look at to try to solve this vibration whilst the m/c is in pieces?

On another note my heli seems to be kicking out huge clouds of smoke much much more than my EVO 50 no matter what I do to the mixture settings. The fuel is Cool power 30% heli fuel. How can I reduce this? I am aware I need to have some smoke but as you can see from the pics this is quite a lot. Have you any suggestions? Will a new engine solve this problem?

MPA I actually tried the same concept as mentioned in my long earlier post,

"I then changed to small but strong elastic (rubber) bands to secure the mount these were by comparison very soft compared with the earlier two methods to the degree that my wife was very scared to take off she thought it would not be strong enough but I thought ok so we flew. The result was almost perfect video except that my flying skills were not so steady for some reason and the heli was moving in the sky a bit but the side to side vibration was gone. How ever on landing 2 of the rubber bands snapped and the heli nearly fell over so these were definitely too soft".

Yes it worked but the mount was not secure under the heli which meant it could move around a bit and felt not so safe.

Seismic, yes thanks to you I took the plunge hahaha. Now in pieces and the rectification starts.

Yes the heli is smoky and I do not know why exactly, I do not know if it is the motor or what, but according the mixture setting it is quit lean already. As this is a second hand heli could the motor's age cause it to become more smoky? This has been a problem for me in the business in some cases normally we can position good enough to get the shot with out smoke but there have been occasions where we were not able to do this. I also normally wrap the camera in a plastic zip lock bag well so it remains clean and oil free. Of course the lens is still open and vunerable.

Yes the mount is only one main bolt in the middle, but I fly also with a lanyard attached as well.

Monterey, You are absolutely correct what you say and it was comments such as this from Seismic and Ace in earlier threads that prompted me to go ahead to strip my heli back down again and go through each and every individual moving part. What I was doing previously was not really fixing the problem but just actually compensating for it by putting elastics and the such to isolate the mount but not actually fixing the root cause. Now I have bit the bullet so to speak and started the process. Hopefully I do not screw it up.

You are correct smoke is an issue some times a bit but it is running a little rich at the moment. I am not so sure if the engine is a little old as I bought it second hand so I might invest in a new motor and see if that helps. Of course the gasser is the way to go.

Best of both worlds for me
I have an aerial photography business but also love the look of the helicopter as it is in real life, scale like you guys do so I decided to make my camera ship similar to the real thing. I fitted my Hirobo Freya 90 into the jet ranger body but still use it for aerial photography.

I know it is not to scale as good as some of you guys do but for me it is the best of both worlds.

I just thought I would share some pics of the maiden flight with you guys.

Hope you like them.

Well I am back but with not so good news,

I tested my video setup last week end after I had followed some of you advice and started to look deeper into my aircraft. Whilst doing this I bit the bullet so to speak and fitted my new jet ranger body to my camera ship at the same time. I know there will be mixed feelings on what you should and should not do but I like the scale look of the helicopter as well as I like to take pics so for me this is the best of both worlds and I know it is no for everyone's taste. Any way I flew it with the mount tied my original way and the vibration was terrible so I changed the connections from the quick release mounts of the askman mount to now secure it with Rubber "├ľ"rings they slip on just nice and are quite strong. I flew again and there was some considerable difference to the better I might add. But still not good enough, I found that when hovering and the camera in one position I have this fast but small side to side movements (vibration) but when my wife pans the camera around in any direction, during the actual panning movement the vibration is not evident in fact I would dare to say it has gone. But once in the stopped stationary position the vibration is back once again. I then changed to small but strong elastic (rubber) bands to secure the mount these were by comparison very soft compared with the earlier two methods to the degree that my wife was very scared to take off she thought it would not be strong enough but I thought ok so we flew. The result was almost perfect video except that my flying skills were not so steady for some reason and the heli was moving in the sky a bit but the side to side vibration was gone. How ever on landing 2 of the rubber bands snapped and the heli nearly fell over so these were definitely too soft.
Since then I took the heli home and thought it through, as a result I removed it completely from the housing again then stripped it down into sections I removed the main shaft the tail rotors and the fan. This for me was a major task as I have never done this before, my intention is to run the motor alone an check for vibration and any imbalance, then add the fan and balance then check the tail rotors and then assemble the tail and check again so in the end every piece will be checked and ran and balanced bit by bit until all reassembled once again and hopefully I have a fully balanced m/c and then I will put it back in the body and see how it is then. Hopefully all is well and I have not more problems.
Any way please see the pics of my new camera ship in flight. Hope that you like them

I can tell you one thing guys, I am so much more wiser now than I was listening to the people in my hobby shop. I am planning to fly my heli in the morning again after I have made some adjustments as per your recommendations. No doubt you will hear from me after that.

Thanks Seismic, Yes you are right in thinking I did not build this m/c. I bought it second hand already built. I took quite a bit of time plucking up the courage to break it down the first time I changed parts on it because the guy here in my local hobby shop went on and on and on about how difficult it was to strip it down and that I would sure screw something up and eventually kill some one, I had to leave it to the expert which was him of course hahaha. Now I have learn t that this is not the case and as such I have broken it down to a degree in some parts but not entirely yet. The words from the shop still ring in my ears a little. It is my intention to also start to buy parts to replace all the shafts with new ones, one by one and re test as you suggest hopefully I get to learn more and have a greater understanding in the process which will indeed help me with future problems or repairs.
I appreciate your email and take you points, Thank you.
