The heli is my custom made bird, Electric, 810 blades, carries an HPX-170 panasonic. All shots were done with the stock lens set at max-wide.
I have found that hooking up with a good videographer who knows camera settings, as well as editing, is a huge plus. Serious video results require teamwork.

Thanks for the compliments!

That's a typical Flying-cam demo short. About 5% (or less) actual aerial shots and the rest, all ground footage. Don't forget the CGI bird in front !

Dont forget the advantage of an electric machine in being able to sit, armed, ready, for a long time. It can be put in the optimum takeoff position and the pilot can be a long distance away. Spools up at the flick of a switch. No worries about flooding it in a hurried rush to get started.
I am with PT - having worked a couple of sets, I did not find I was the holdup at all , often waiting for everyone else to get in place etc. There was lots of warning.

Nice concept ! I think you would need to move the batts much farther forward to make it balance, especially given a seperate tail motor out back.

That photo shows the typically compressed perspective typical of most shots from a full size plane. The long telephoto lenses used to frame a subject from 1000+ feet cause this. Backgrounds are much closer than they appear. How far does the front driveway/turn around look to be from the waterfront ? not far .
RC AP would shoot from much closer, 200 Feet ?. The wide lenses typically used on RC would enhance the size of the property and push out the perspective of the pavement closeness.
It depends what you want to do with the pic. Do you just want to show thats its there, on the water and its got X number of windows ? or do you want to showcase a multi-million dollar property and convey the grandness of it ? depends on what your customer wants. Or what you can sell them on

You want to take the snap ring off the shaft (at the pinion end) and then slide the whole shaft/bell out. The shaft is bonded (locitited?) into the magnet bell.

One thing you will find is material shape and size availability is much greater in 6061. It is pretty much the standard for extrusions - things like tubing and flat bar/angle etc.
7075 is much harder to find in common shapes and sizes. I have seen it only in plate form.

Looks like an eccentric (off center)condition in the center ball bushing. You can see the runout in the outer race of the bushing(great vid by the way).I would doubt that is normal for Joker quality. There may have been a bad run of them(the bearings), And thats why you have 2 swashes with the same problem. It looks like the second unit is not as bad. From all I've heard Gerd of minicopter will stand by it 100%, but he is on the other side of the world; it will take time to replace.
If you feel competent, you could try to replace the bushing yourself, just need a press and the right press tools to re/re it. Most likely it is a GE10C bearing. Thats for a 10mm shaft. I know the idea of fixing a new part yourself sucks, but sometimes in the tuning of a heli you gotta do what you gotta do.

I have done some limited testing with the T1i (Just got it). It seems to suffer from huge 'jellovision' problems (rolling shutter artifacts ?) . Any movement in the frame looks very bad. At this point I would stay away from it for video use if I were you. The results I am getting are nothing like the 5D2 clips that are out there.

One further thought. It is possible to adjust the various camera parameters so that vibrations are minimised( high shutter speed to reduce single-frame motion blur etc). But if you are on a multi-thousand dollar shoot, Its very likely there will be a Pro Director of Photography telling you how HE wants the camera to be set.
But man, it would be fun to pull off such a gig. One of us could do it...A better man.

Im no film expert either. Just have done a fair bit of research. That 200 foot load of film will burn through in 2 minutes. I think when you are using a costly one-shot medium like that, and charging those sort of prices, You had better be able to deliver some perfect footage.
That would be my worry; After spending so much time with a finicky front mount that works some days and not others. It would be a constant worry that the rig was going to produce the great footage on demand.
I'm not so sure 35mm film would mask vibes better than video, I used to get great shots from a SD camcorder on another heli, When I strapped on an HD camera, the enhanced detail showed vibes.

Im waiting for Tabb to do it first.

The weight is not a problem. The way I see it, any modern 800 blade class machine (such as mine !) with a suitable power system (eg X-era 4035 on 12s) should be able to haul a 10 lb camera. The issue I see is with vibes. I have been chasing vibes on my new machine.
With the high res of film, the vibes may show even more. It would be a lot of fun to play with a film camera, But then you have the luxury of paying hundreds to have your film stock developed, only to find you have vibes !.
I think you might have to expose quite a few hundred feet of film on your own nickel to prove out your machine is flying-cam worthy. but who knows what they do ......

That Sux. The machine was working really well too.
Ground resonance on spooldown is really bad as ya cant jam the collective to get the thing off the ground like ya can on spoolup. I notice I have developed a habit of always hitting hold about 6" off the ground on landing and letting the machine settle down as I increase the collective as the headspeed decays.

Do you have an exisiting set of pulleys that you are trying to use ? The belt pitch AND tooth style have to match the pulley type. There are several tooth profiles within each belt pitch. And of course theres metric and inch variants.

If you are on a budget, you also might consider a DVX100 . It's the standard def Panasonic model (little brother to the HD HVX200). It is lighter/smaller than the HVX as well, so may package better on your heli. It has all the features you need (24p and manual controls etc), also records to DV tape (no $$$ P2 cards). Being a 3ccd real progesssive scan, its very suitable for moving aerial shots.
Yes standard def still has a place, especially for web work. Before the HVX200 came out in late '05, the DVX100 was the King. You should be able to get one used for $1500. They hold their value well; desired by 'amateur' filmmakers.

I think there a chance that may be a 'post destabilized' shot. The vid looks jerky in that scene and in many of the other scenes involving the people on the ground the same 'jerky' effect is used.
Also that particular shot does not look like an aerial shot, more like from a chase truck.
No doubt flying-cam has used stabilization, they say so in an online article I read one time, when they said they can fly in 40 mph winds.

I think PS1 is onto something. The meter should be inline 'after' the y connector harness(that pairs the 2 packs for a 10s system from 2-5s packs); immediatly before the ESC- where it can read total volts+amps for correct wattage calc. The way it is in that clip appears to measure only one packs worth of volts ?

Just a thought, Not to take anything away from this important design modification. Just thinking out loud.
Isn't this the opposite of redundant systems ? Instead if having twin power systems each capable of flying the aircraft independently (such as on a twin engine full size heli or plane). This system is 'dependant' as opposed to 'redundant' Both main and tail motor batt/esc/motor/drive must remain working simultaneously.
If either system fails the heli is coming down. Statistically, By having doubled the sets of components in a 'dependant' system you have doubled the chances of an in flight failure. Probably less than that actually as you have removed the chances that the tail drive in the 'old' system can fail. Certainly a factor but how many esc/motor/batt failures are there versus a belt breaking in flight ?

Rambling done. time for a drink

Phew thats nothing, just here in my area in the last year :

1: an elderly man (still with a valid pilots licence) crashes his twin engine malibu plane into the side of a condo building shortly after takeoff. Norrowly missing killing the occupants. More than a year later and 1.5 mill in damages many of the occupants suites are still not inhabitable.

2: A Jet ranger 206 heli flying low over the congested city inspecting power lines, has an engine failure and crashes onto the city street on to an innocent pedestrian. All 3 on the heli are killed as well as the pedestrian.

And thats just in the last year in the west here !.

Better shut down that guy with the "toy" heli though. He might scratch the paint on a car should it go down.

Servo linkage for AP
I have been contemplating the best way to hook up servos to the swash for AP use.
What are the thoughts on pull-pull/bellcranks versus direct to swash type linkages ? I like the precision of the pull-pull type but like the simplicity of the direct setup.
I made up this test frame just to try out some ideas and it looks pretty good. Very rigid linkage action.
Ultimatly you can get frames for the Trex600 that mount servos either way, any one have any experience with those ?

Check out http://www.uavvision.com . Slick full fuse and camera mount. Reall expensive and not really viable for the average joe camera heli guy. Heavy too. And not too stealthy.....

Our little helis dont have to be weatherproof and are built much different than full size aircraft that use monocoque (stressed skin) construction. That type of structure makes for beautiful, rounded enclosed designs.

Our helis are a bunch of gears and shafts bolted to some blocks with lots of bolts and chit. any cover on top only adds weight and makes it harder to see when things are coming loose.

Besides, if it wasnt ugly enough the earth wouldn't repel it. You'd have to make up that lift somewhere.

I have had good luck with tangos, have had 5 of them. And had 2 fail. Those were both pushed beyond the limits of 2000 watts and 13 lbs all up weight. Another one flying at <12 lbs has 300+ flights.
I think the tango is a great motor but it has its limits. The magnets are glued to the armature and will fail with too much repeated hot flights. Being an inrunner the magnets take out the windings if they loosen.
Dont know that you can do being that you are using the stock 47mm width Trex E frames. Few motors(besides Tango) fit without mods. There are the "NUE" motors but they run hot and have high kV's

One mod Ive thought of for the Trex 600 is to use some of the 600N parts that use a 54mm frame spacing. The lower plate is an issue as the N and the E are totally different in that area. But the boom clamp and main brng block etc. would interchange.

Remember that diodes like that have a drop of about .7 V across them. The BEC will output 4.8 or so, but add in the diode drop and you could be under 4 volts to the RX and servos, not a good place to be. Its even worse for the sytem when running off the Ncd pack as it can drop to around 4.5V under load.
One solution is to use a 6V bec and Batt pack. The diodes will give you close to 5V then at the RX.

Are you saying you only changed the one servo out for a DS8711 ? and left the other two original 811's ?
That is a big no-no on a ccpm machine. I would reccomend not flying it till you change the other 2.

I'd also be worried about the HF1216 one-way auto hub bearing the 600 uses. Its ok for a 8 lb heli but on a 15 lb AP rig its marginal. I'm sure there are lots of guys doing fine with it; but it's right at the limit of its spec.

The helicommand has no "IMU" Inertial measurement unit. an IMU combines gyros with accelerometers and some very tricky programming to resolve a reference plane (artificial horizon) that is drift proof and self-correcting. The programming is where all the money is on a "real" autopilot.
The helicommand is able to do a very good job with its gyros and programming. But it will drift, and wont resolve true level if put through some tests. One thing in its favour is the relativly short flight time of the average "model" heli. 10-15 mins ? 'real' autopilots must maintain level for hours at a time.

That is about 6.5 Lbs of batteries. $1200 worth for one flight. Looks like this is a Joker ? not a lot of room for payload before you hit the 20 lb mark. Whats a maxi joker weigh sans batts ?

You can also mount the monitor and Cam mount control system in a single case, makes it alot easier for the cam operator to work on when he is in a chase car.
This one needs a brighter monitor but it works OK with a shade attached.

SLR does video
Nikon D90 :

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond90/

Records 1280/720 HD video at 24p. For $1000.
This is just the beginning, hopefully other manufacturers will jump on the bandwagon. SLR's already have the imaging technology to blow away nearly any video camera, Certainly the under $10k ones. The sensor in the Canon 5D is bigger than even the "Red One" camera.
I think the current limitation is the huge bitrate from the sensor, but compression/codec evolution will fix that.

Scarlet better lookout.......

Indeed. I am guilty of thread hijack.

Track, what about practicing at it with something smaller, and er, disposable ? like a steenky ol raptor 50 ? I have found with the AP flying that confidence is a huge part of the game. If you know you can do it with the practice ship 20 times you will gain big kahunas when it comes camera rig time.

As I understand it, COA's are issud to state/govermental agencies in the USA. They are not issued to the UAV in particular; they allow the agency (NOAA, Border Patrol etc) to operate a UAV. They are not issued to private, commercial operation like Flying-Cam. I could be wrong.....

Flying-Cam gets FAA approval prior to every flight
Are you sure about that ? that would make them a first as a private entity to get a COA.

Of course the most important question is, What are they willing to pay to get this shot ?

Or is this another "student" film.......

Go into the RF module on the TX and find its power lead, Rig that to an external switch. This allows the transmitters main power to stay on and th RF can go on and off with the flick of a switch. Just need some 2-way voice headset radios between you and the other pilot and your golden. "3-2-1- your heli !" This is how Flying Cam does it.

Where you get your stuff can make a difference. I get most of my Kontronik stuff thru Tower Hobbies - Tower/Great planes are a Kontronik distr in the US. As a distributor they handle warranty issues with the Kontronik line; They have a good customer service reputation. Had a tango motor go and I sent it and the Jazz ESC back and they replaced em both no questions. The ESC was still working but was a little flaky on startup.
