Hey Marty,

Busy working and trying to get motivated to fly.

Now that the nice weather is here again and there's no flyfishing it's time to fly.

Three more helis to get in the air and the bugs worked out and the whole fleet will be ready for action.

Shout out to the old dogs....
Just wanted to post and say after two years of not flying I finally took one of the Audacity birds out this weekend and checked to see if I could still hover at least. Hovered half a tank and came up with a list of issues that have to be sorted out. Will try and get out again this weekend and shake some more of the cobwebs out out of my head. Trying to remember all the features of my Tx are just half the battle.

Where is everyone? See a few new names here. Looks like this part of the board is pretty dead. I have a feeling I know where most of you are hanging, but I'm not really into that other place. I guess it would be okay if I just hung with the Pantera crowd.

Anyway, happy flying to all!

I know I haven't been around much lately but I plan on getting out over the winter. My busy time at work is coming to an end and house renos are winding down. Actually took a few machines down off the wall to start checking them over in anticipation.

So, yes, I fly in all temps down to -20 or -25C. Use a nice transmitter mitt with a heat pack in it.

The real problem I have is after digging out the snow to make a LZ I have problems seeing it in flat light. I was laying out evergreen boughs but they fly up. I solved this by mixing a 2L bottle of grape Kool-Aid to use to mark the snow.

One thing I love doing after a fresh snowfall is skim the snow with the skids and leave little trails all over the area I fly. It must puzzle everyone that sees the tracks.

I'm here. Check out my gallery for my build.

I didn't go 5 bladed on mine, too much money.

If you're using the Pantera I'd really recommend the BBC if you can do it. With a .61 or bigger.

I built mine with a Tiger 50 MkI and an OS .50 Hyper. It is pretty underpowered for such a heavy fuse.

Don't know if I can be much help but I'll watch for questions, or PM me if need be.

No snow is bad because I like the snow.

Also, by this time of year we should have snow on the ground that is here to stay for the winter. If we don't start getting snow that's going to stay we're going to have a very dry summer next year which increases the chances for fires. The mountains have snow right now, but not nearly as much as they should have.

Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for snow. The system that dumps on Bill usually moves this way.

I've got a Tiger MkI inside a Funkey H500D so it will fit the D and E. Don't know about an MD variant but I think someone on here has done it IIRC.

If it's your first stand-off scale project it's pretty basic to do.

There are some pictures in my gallery and I think I've still got a step-by-step photo documentation of the build. If it didn't get lost in my last computer crash.

Whatever you choose, have fun!

ETA: And Jeff's ship was beautifully done. It was his that inspired me to do a H500 body.

Seems like this winter may be the best season to actually find some time to fly.

I will fly without hesitation to about -20C, but after that I have to be really motivated.

Actually looking forward to winter and the snow. Bill, let us know how your MGP makes out in the cold weather. Interested to hear some reports. I have been considering changing out my MGs for MGPs over the next year.

Make sure the anti-rotation slots (or whatever they're called)on the boom are lined up with the plastic pins on the inside of the tailcase. You should not be able to twist the boom when everything is lined up and installed properly.

I posted this awhile back in the Off Topics but it got buried pretty quickly. I know a lot of you are aware of what I do on the side and I've shared lots of PMs over the years with some of you talking about this sort of stuff. So thought it would be cool to post it in this forum.

It is heli related, but not RC or even Audacity related. However a lot of the people I talk to the most about RC, and life in general, are right here in this forum.

Take a gander and hope you enjoy.

I stocked up on fuel beforehand. Have about 14 gallons left.

Phil, sorry that work is getting in the way of flying models. Our heli-base will probably pack up today. I think there were only a few machines left as of yesterday. Only saw (or heard) one 212 take off all day. Things are slowing down a bit here firefighting-wise.

Marty, yeah it sucks. Was doing CPR on a drowning victim in the back of an ambulance, and the driver was goingn a little too fast for a corner. Drifted and hit the ditch a bit and bounced me into the wall. Came out of it with two broken bones and dislocated elbow. I'm on forced rest for awhile and may not be going back.

They have anodized ends in pretty colours. I use their tubes and ends on all my helicopters. If you don't want to order from Canada there's got to be an American supplier as well. Maybe MJP Carbon.

When you say "refrigerated" bearings do you actually mean cooled from the fridge, or from a freezer?

I've always used the freezer to bring the bearings to the right temp. I've put the engine block in the oven for 10 mins at 300F (better yet just throw the block out into the Iraqi sun for 5 mins ) and the bearings in the freezer for the same time and they usually just drop right in. May depend on what the ambient air temp is though too? You may have to be quicker at putting the bearings in, or just leave the bearings in the freezer longer before putting the block in the oven?

You may have to experiment and try again like you're doing.

...time.

I flew two tanks on the weekend and two last night in the Pantera. Haven't flown the Tiger in months and I can count on one hand how much the Pantera has flown since March.

Things should slow down next month and hopefully get the Pantera out more as well as some of the rest of my fleet.

Glad to hear some are flying.

I managed to get a couple tanks in this morning first thing. Plan to get out again tomorrow.

Every weekend I have off we've been out camping so just haven't had time. The end of this month will be the last trip of the summer though, so should be able to fly more then.

Hope things are well.

I'm embarassed to say I have 16 gallons sitting in my carport. I've flown 2 gallons since October 07, and maybe 1/4 a gallon in the gassers. Very little flying for me lately. Too busy.

This weekend though, I have mow the lawn and wash the vehicles. That's it, so I plan to fish Saturday and fly Sunday - providing nothing comes up.

DSW,

I have 5 MultiGovs and have not run into that problem when setting up on my 9Z WCII or 9C. Sorry, don't know enough about JR equipment but I'm sure it's only a minor issue.

Maybe give Bob Li a shout if you can't figure it out, or the replies here don't help. Good luck, it's a great governor.

Never had this problem on the Audacity models. Hmm...I'll have to check. Any of the metal frame and G10 frames I have I either double up on the fuel line and check once in awhile, or I take some large diameter fuel line and cut down the middle and squeeze around the frame hole like a grommet and trim to fit. That method has worked great for me.

I imagine if you trim any burrs and round the edges on the plastic frames it won't be a problem.

Glad the outcome for you was good.

The Approach Engineering Apache has a flex shaft drive and there was an adaptor kit made for belt driven Raptors that would probably work for a Pantera or Tiger. Approach is no longer being made since the death of its founder James Linder. You could check and see if there are any adaptors available through Starwood Models.

This is what the tail looks like on the Approach Engineering Apache. I don't think I have any pics of the open tail showing the flex drive system. You can make it out coming frame where the boom would be on this Raven. The adaptor utilizes the belt drive which goes to the adapter at the base of the tail. This is a torque tube driven Raven so it was an easy adaptation to flex driven.

The LSD works fine. It's a lot cheaper and simpler too than some of the other manufacturers.

I too have been using the Hayes line for my clunks in all my helis (except gassers of course). It's not limited to Audacity that's for sure. The clunk line that comes with every nitro kit I've built and every header tank I've bought is not worth keeping.

I've never had a clunk come off but I have had the tube split in some of the kit stuff. That's when I switched to the Hayes.

Sorry about your crash Ron. How bad was it? I always try and keep an eye on my header even if the main is full.

It did a hover with the nose into the hill and we hover exited the tail was still about 6' off the ground and not much snow was kicked up - the snow in the debris field is pretty solid as the avalanche packs it in pretty good. I never watched the heli land at the bottom, I had other things on my mind. When we took off there was a lot of snow kicked up and it was totally white. We took off up-slope tree top level and then over the ridge and down into the valley.

The area at the bottom was actually quite large. Bigger than this spot below that was from another rescue I did in the summer a few years back. Same area about 2500' higher and to the north of the avalanche spot.

This one is two up front and controls on the right only. We had to configure it for the basket stretcher so left front seat is out. Patients legs go all the way to the front. Lot nicer than a 206 though because you don't have to take the doors off, bar out, load the patient and then put everything back together. This A-Star the back doors hinge backwards. Really easy for loading but more of a pain for hover exits in my opinion.Tiger & Pantera 50s

LOL...we need all that snow here as we don't get much rain in the summer. Forest fires can be a very big concern for us. I live in one of sunniest areas in Canada. When it snows, it snows though. Love it here, wouldn't change it for anywhere else.

AvTech - Avalanche Technician - The real weenies. This guy didn't want to go up because he had a sore throat. He turned out to be an okay guy in the long run.

The pic with people in the heli is the patient (of course) one of the guys that was with him and the pilot (right seat controls only in this heli). Most of the A-Stars we fly in here are equipped for 6. This one only flies with 5 max. I'd love to see the log book as this thing has worked around the world.

Tight yes, but been in a lot tighter for sure with this guy. 27 years flying here in the mountains. He has a Hughes 500D that he uses to chase game for tagging and monitoring. The thing is like a little sports car the way it flies. We never use the Hughes for SAR though as it's too small and can't carry any equipment.

Anyway, take care.

Yep, that's me. The weenie.

Here is the story and the pics.

I know a lot of you are aware that I'm involved in Search and Rescue and some have even PMd me to find out more about what it is I do. I don't always get to post details - sometimes because of confidentiality or fatalities, and sometimes it's just not that interesting. This is a rare opportunity because there are actually some pictures that I can show.

I'll say right now that I am not as good a story teller or writer. So I'll warn you right now about that.

About 100 times a year I get called out for motor vehicle accidents (extrication, recovery, or steep embankment) as well as searches and technical rescues.

This weekend was just another one of those events. This time for a skier who while back country skiing was caught in an avalanche triggered by another skiier in his party of four. The rest were able to ski to safe areas but this guy got caught up in the avalanche and tried to ski along with it. He was doing okay he says, until a tree got in his way. He broke his left femur in the collision. Compound fracture with bleeding.

This group was skiing at about 7000' in a bowl on the backside of a ridge of the Steeple Mountains which is part of the Hughes Range. It is about a 4 minute helicopter ride from where I live. They were able to call out for help because they carried a UHF radio which they were able to use to make contact and request help. Without this radio this group would have had to ski to their snow mobiles, then ride to their truck and then get within cell range to make a call. That would have probably taken 3 - 4 hours. This group has been involved in backcountry accidents in the past and decided to start carrying a radio.

I received the call while starting to prepare lunch. This of course is how these things normally happen. Just as you throw something on the bbq. It was another SAR Manager asking if I was available to go in and do an extraction. Easy, you say, just hop in a helicopter and go. If only it were like that. We have to assess the situation, request use of a helicopter through our Provincial Emergency Program, and then wait. These helicopters cost about $2000.00/hr to rent. In the meantime I've already lined up an Avalanche Technician and started getting all our equipment ready. We were first of all going to fly in and find these people, then assess the area for stability and make sure it was safe to send a team into. My forward thinking is to take equipment to do the rescue with you and if opportunity presents itself while your there, perform the rescue.

We had our authorization for a helicopter at 1250, I had received the initial call at 1206. By the time the equipment was at the helipad and loaded it was 1321. We took off at 1325 to fly to the airport and pick up the AvTech. We got him at 1340. Ten minutes later we had found the skiiers, assessed the situation and determined that we could perform the rescue right then and there. We did a hover exit, built a bench to bring the stretcher into by long line and then received the stretcher. Had the patient stabilized, loaded and down the debris field to the helicopter at 1415. By 1420 we had the patient loaded and we were ariborne to the hospital. 1425 we landed at the hospital and handed over our patient. Took off again and landed back at the helipad. I was back at home two hours later in time to make supper.

A fun little adventure to break up the day. I did this same sort of thing about 7 years ago. I left work at 1330 after receiving a call, drove towards the helicopter who was flying towards me. We saw each other, comfirmed an LZ he landed, I loaded, did a hover exit at 8000' in this same mountain range. Loaded an injured hunter while hovering, flew to hospital and back at work at 1630. I had to help at the emergency room (we all have medical training to be able to assist where needed). If I didn't stay at the hospital I could have been back at work by 1530. How's that for breaking up the monotony of work?

Anyway, here are the pics. Not the greatest clarity - taken with a point and shoot that the AvTech had. I've blocked out the faces of people not involved in the rescue organization.

The backside of this ridge is where we went into - this picture taken at another time.

The debris field

Our patient - I'm on the right and then two members of the skiing party

Lowering down the hill - I'm on the left with the pack and the AvTech is above doing a body belay. Helicopter down below.

Our heli and pilot. We have a lot of room in this spot more than usual!

Our patient in and ready to go

At the hospital landing pad. me on the right handing off to the paramedics. Interesting note. We are at the hospital which is behind me, yet we cannot wheel the gurney the 100m down the concrete path designed for this directly to the hospital. We MUST hand off to BCAS (British Columbia Ambulance Service) as rescuers, and not directly to the hospital. Beaurocracy at its finest.

Finally!
After over 6 weeks of not flying my Pantera I finally got out this morning. I'm telling you though, after not flying that much this winter I'm a weenie. My fingers got cold in the -4C cold and I only flew one tank. Oh well, it was great. I'm now looking out my window at the snow falling again. lol

I was goingt to go out yesterday and fly after lunch when the weather was half decent. Unfortunately I didn't even get my lunch! No sooner did I have some hamburgers on the grill when I got paged to go perform an extraction of a skier who got caught in an avalanche at 7500'. He had a compound fracture of his femur and took about two and half hours to get him out by helicopter. Kind of threw a wrench into my day.

Got to fly in a new A-Star 350 B3 though! Nice heli, and this one has actually flown up on Everest. I'll post some pics once the AvTech sends them to me. There were only two of us so some of the pics were kind of the hold and point at yourself shots. Maybe some will turn out.

Hope the rest of you guys are flying.

Try leaning the engine more a little at a time. That sounds WAY too rich and can cause some problems like you're seeing as well. You're not breaking your engine in or doing it any good running that rich.

That sounds more like a low speed vibration and not a high speed. Look for indicators of a low speed.

Does it do it just while spooling up, or at certain RPMs? Have you checked the main shaft, bearings, tracking and blade balance?

Vibrations can be fun to try and track down and what your describing to us here doesn't sound like engine, or fan vibrations. From my experience ( although limited) anyway.

How rich is your engine running?

Guys,

I've been following this thread and noticed the comments on the ball links. I just order a Tiger this past weekend. Will I have an issue with the parts in my kit? If so, should I just go ahead and replace/not use the included ones?

Thanks,
Bill
I've had 3 used Tigers and 1 new, 1 Pantera, and bought lots of linkage kits from Audacity and have had no ball link failures. I fly in -20C weather as well. Maybe it's just luck of the draw that some guys are having issues and I've just been lucky. Maybe there was a bad batch? All you can do is check when you build or replace them all in the beginning if you're worried. Cheap part, but very important, so if you're concerned then replace.

It has been quiet!

I really haven't had too much to report. I haven't worked on any of my helis in about 6 weeks. I charged the batteries last weekend in anticipation of going out but never made it. So busy right now and the snow has put a damper on things. When the sun is out I've been trying to get the dogs out to the lakes that have just opened up.

Maybe this upcoming weekend.

I had no problem shortening the CF blades I used. Just filled the hollow ends with epoxy until they were balanced and rechecked after drying.

I did go through a couple t/r grips on my first Tiger using CF blades until things were figured out.

Was it our magazine advertising?
No. Haven't picked up a heli model magazine since I was 11 years old.

Was it the website?
It helped but wasn't the deciding factor.

Were the magazine reviews influential?
No.

What was it that caught your imagination?
The buzz here on RR. I was researching a nitro to move up to from a TRex. Began looking around in the summer of 2005 and found people on here talking about it.

What cemented the notion we offered what you want?
Feedback from guys on here like Foxden, Armsmaster, Hootowl, Darkfa8, Planesarenofun, and of course JB himself. The great customer support that was always mentioned.

How did you hear of us?
Like I said I was looking to move into nitro. I was scanning the classifieds and found a seldom flown Tiger 50 for sale in Nov of 2005. I started researching into it, found it was relatively unknown but those that had one really liked it. It had a lot of innovative features that appealed to me. Audacity seemed like it had a winner so figured I had nothing to lose.

With three Tigers, and 2 Panteras, tons of parts I have no regrets about my decision whatsoever. Maybe another thing to look at would be what has caused people to leave the fold? This particular forum is 60 pages. My first post is on page 53. What's happened to all the guys that were around at that time (some I've mentioned above)? Some have left the hobby, some have moved to other models, different things going on in their lives and so on. May be helpful to get feedback from those that are still around elsewhere on the board.

On the 500D I was able to move the mechanics back more by boom mounting the tail servo. This saved me from having to trim the fuselage boom and the fore section of the doghouse.

If you look at the pics I sent Marty then you can see where the boom is slotted on the underside for the t/r push rod. I'm assuming you got the pictures okay?

A little late responding. Missed this thread.

Quite a few guys here with Tigers have put them in Funkey Hughes 500 fuses (500D, 500E). I have a Tiger in a 500D in my gallery. It was a pretty easy fit, with a little modification for the tail push rod.

Just finding it hard to justify spending more money on servos and adding another heli. I'm running out of room too!

Besides, I thought this winter I would have lots of spare time to work on stuff. Been run off my feet. Three motor vehicle accidents today, a crashed heli (full scale), and a crashed heli (full scale) yesterday North of here. The guy that crashed today lived but the pilot of yesterday's died, but he probably saved the lives of his 8 passengers by going down the way he did. Heli skiing outfit. Looking forward to some sleep tonight.

I'll probably break down and buy the 9252s that I need though. Have everything else. Diana shouldn't notice the extra heli hanging.

Waiting patiently here too. I've got a kit and a YS .61 waiting. Haven't built it yet as I'm still trying to decide whether to just put it in the current Pantera and keep the other for parts, or fork out some more cash for some servos and add another heli to the fleet.

Any updates John?

I know if I'm just "floating" around and flying circuits I can get 18 minutes out of the tank and another couple to run the header dry. It seems very economical. This is with CP 15% mind you.

I line mine up with the flybar carrier mainly.

If all your links are the same and everything is parallel at 90 degrees on the servo arm, and centre stick you can just site down the edge of the paddle and line up with carrier.

There are also paddle alignment tools you can use. I have one that I attach a FMP bubble level too and make sure it's level that way. Everything else has to be setup properly though.

You'll find lots of tips and tricks if you search the whole forum, and some really intricate methods over in the FAI/F3C section.

Hope this helps.

I don't have the metal swash but I believe the swash is customizeable from 120 to 135 degree. I think the swash comes configured for 120 degrees? If you want the 135 degree option you put the longer balls into the holes that would give 135 degrees.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly that has this swash and a definitive answer. If not, just PM JB or call him.

A couple of us have put Tiger mechs in a 500D. Haven't heard of any in the MD500. There are a few simple mods that need to be done for the 500D, not sure what you'll have to do for yours.

Mine flies just fine for a scale model. I don't have many videos of it. There are some pictures in my gallery. I will eventually put a BB conversion in it with a .61 size engine.

Here's a video of its first hover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MS6Ru9YZjs

If the airframe has a good amount of time on it then check the bearings. You can actually pop them out by just loosening the frames and prying them apart a bit. No need to completely disassemble. By increasing the headspeed you may be masking a more serious problem.

It may be time for a complete overhaul of all the bearings though? Do you have a greaser?

Let us know what you find.

Definitely not a guru but you could try a little higher headspeed and see if that helps. Have you changed your pitch curves at all - maybe a bit higher pitch angle at a lower throttle setting? Dampeners worn, dry? Ball link too tight?

I run my normal speed on my Tiger at 1650 then 1850 and 1910. I have a little wobble during spool down and what I do is hit throttle hold after I land and then just keep the blades at 0 or a little negative pitch until they slow down. Nothing like you describe during flight though.

You should get a few extra minutes out of a header - depending on the size, and your setup. It's main purpose in life is not really to increase your flight time though.

You'll get used to landing every fifteen minutes. Even with a gasser I still land and let myself relax for a bit.

As far as the battery system. It depends on how much you want to spend. The Fromeco Arizona regulator and Li-Ion batteries are great, but pricey. If you're on a budget then just stick to what you want to spend. With the 5200 Relions you can pretty much spend the weekend flying without recharging your receiver battery (12+ flights depending on style and setup).

All that extra fuel (tanks) is going to start taking away from the performance of your Pantera which is going to take away from your enjoyment.

Best thing, add a header and fly it like you stole it for 15 minutes, land refuel, repeat. Oh yeah, and make sure you've got good batteries. and you check the voltage.

So, when's the maiden?

You could add a 2oz or 3oz header tank to increase it a few minutes (if you don't have one already). Times will also depend on the type of flying you're doing, type of fuel and needle settings.

Off hand I don't know what other tanks that are larger will fit.

maybe someone could purchase on for you, and ship it out.

I like it because it works well, and was very easy to setup. I use the optical pickup.
Not sure what the problem is. I live in Canada too and buy mine from Aerospire directly. No problem. No different than all the other stuff that's bought outside of Canada. I can understand supporting local hobby shops though, if this is the case. He's got at least one pretty good one right in Edmonton.

I can't believe your Evo doesn't have them! My Eagle has them. And my Predator. At $1200 does your Evo even have main shaft thrust bearings?

That's the cool thing about the Pantera. John was thinking and made the inexpensive Pantera with some of the features of the more expensive models.

Who's the Poet??
Has anyone noticed the poetic ads at the top of the Audacity forum page? I've seen two different ones now.

John, are you writing these?

Or, was there another contest that I missed? Maybe we could have some user submitted limericks

Edited to correct my spelling of limericks.

Here's another from Hirobo. Not sure on pricing though. There's a thread on it over on the RR Hirobo forum.

Here's what it looks like:

Happy New Year everyone!

onebigjunker, flying at -18 is even a little too cold for me. lol -12C here today. Don't know what the windchill was but the "nitro-splash chill" felt pretty damn cool.

Ouch! I cringed looking at that picture.

Another a/c claimed by a downwind turn.

I took advantage of the sale yesterday and bought another Pantera. This will be a parts kit though. I've got enough helis flying (or being built) to keep me busy.

Cheers and all the best in 2008 to you and everyone else on the Audacity forum.

Just shoot JB a PM and he'll look after you. I don't recall seeing anything on their site. You used to get a piece of paper with the manual.

You'll have to get the longer clutch hub from John for the Hyper, or a prop washer from OS.
