I don't know what it is about shipping from China. The government must subsidize it extremely heavily. How else could you order a pack of Nintendo DS styluses for $1.00 with free shipping from some sites?

Short answer - they're great!

They are easy to install and operate and the canopy doesn't come off in flight. It's that simple.

Parallel Charging batteries of different capacities...

The charger charges to set voltage, not capacity, and the batteries are constantly equalizing their voltage; that's how it works. Connected batteries act as one.

Spencer K, your understanding echos my understanding (based on lots of reading on various forums and personal experience).

Last year I lost components on my flybarred Trex 500's head and was able to fly it through loops and rolls before I noticed it wasn't flying properly. I landed immediately when I brought it in for a hover and heard the one blade fluttering.

It was the first flight after a rebuild and I had given it what I considered to be a number of pre-flights. Obviously, I missed something. I think it must have been a split link or weakened component and the rest of the damage happened subsequently.

The heli was not hard to fly; I only noticed it's degraded flight performance during agressive flight and the noise in the hover. I didn't perceive any difference in pitch input requirements.

Posting the video here of the rockets on a heli with training gear is like posting a video on a gun enthusiast forum of a baby playing with a BB gun with a "cool video" title.

I think we can expect to see many similar and some worse as R/C becomes more affordable and accessible. Publicised accidents will lead to more regulation and restrictions. This is what we should be concerned with.

We need to be more proactive in bringing people into our clubs and associations and do more to educate people on safe flying. It is in our own best interest to do so.

Sorry to say it to a new pilot, but I have to agree that seeing a heli with training gear doing something as potentially dangerous as launching rockets is not cool at all. If you (they?) want to be an accepted member of the RC community, then you (they?) need to try to be more responsible and seek out information about what our community is about.

From the training gear and this post, I can only assume that you (they?) are new to the hobby. I urge you (them?) to seek out more experienced RC enthusiasts to learn how to fly safely.

Last year I changed from Dean's Ultra and Micro to EC5 and EC3 and haven't looked back. The EC connectors perform well, have moulded ridges for grip and don't require shrink wrap to finish. They are keyed and shrouded and the connection spark happens inside the shroud.

The largest packs I have are 6S 3300.

Individual needs
There are so many personal factors to consider that it's difficult to give one answer. Price, flying locations and flying frequency all come to mind. If we ignore these and only consider performance, we probably just go for a 90.

Myself, I fly the 250 most of all because it's so darned convenient because I can fly it almost anywhere. It's also nice that it's inexpensive. It's performance is decent, but for me, it's mostly the convenience. I'm not a hardcore 3D competitive pilot, so it's not optimal performance that matters most; acceptable (but strong) performance is good enough for me.

By CP, do you mean collective pitch? The Trex 100S is a fixed pitch helicopter, like the Blade MSR.

The upcoming 100 3G will be a collective pitch, flybarless heli.

Kudos to Futaba for apparently raising the bar and achieving flybarless with true flybar feel. Disdain for making it work only on Futaba S.Bus radio setups. Niche product.

We'll just have to wait for the other folks to achieve the same performance. Then everyone can have it.

Futaba S.Bus pilots rejoice and enjoy. Alas, I have Spektrum DSM2.

Something else you can check:

I have a friend who just went through a similar experience with his 450 Pro. In the end, it was bad main grip bearings. They worked on the bench but felt notchy with up or down loading. Under flight loads, they would bind up and fry servos. No blown servos since replacing the bearings.

I wouldn't recommend it either, but for a slightly different reason. That is not a beginner's helicopter - it's really for an experienced pilot. Din;t let the low price convince you otherwise.

Your skills will progress much, much faster with a larger heli, at least a 450, preferably larger if you can afford it. If you fly a larger heli, your jaw will drop to the floor and you will wonder why you spent so much time and money on the smaller ones.

The problem with the little helis is that they can leave you with a bad experience and leave you frustrated. Larger helis are the real deal and are fun to fly, not frustrating.

The larger ones weigh more and will react more slowly giving you time to think; they will teach you how not to overcorrect and to be more proactive to making corrections. a 50 size heli (600 electric) is a dream to hover and fly. They're more itimidating and have a greater up-front and repair cost, but they will pay dividends in helping you progress much faster.

Return to the smaller ones when you have become a skilled pilot and you want a tiny heli to 3D indoors.

+1 for the sim (Phoenix or Realflight, etc.). A must have.

If you've already got them, the HS56 is fine on Trex 450 cyclic; just stock up on servo gear sets or sell them and buy the MGs. The HS56 used to be a very common servo on the 450 until the HS65 came out. The HS65MG is a better value if you're buying new.

The heli doesn't mind the wind, the pilot does. Why not save your dollars and learn to fly in the wind with your 500? All it takes is practise in the wind; it becomes less stressful with each flight and it excellent for refining your piloting skills.

I sold my Raptor 50V2 when I got my Trex 500 and to me, it handles wind almost as well as the Raptor 50 did.

Bigger is better, but it's also more expensive to repair and can limit your flying options.

If you want to buy something larger/newer, then by all means do what's right for you.

550 and 700
I am seriously considering selling my 500 to get a 550 FBL or even a 700 FBL. The 500 would seem redundant and it costs more to maintain multiple E-helis (mainly batteries). I'm also eager to go flybarless.

Came close to pulling the trigger this week again, but I managed to calm down now and plan to wait until next year.

When I bought my Trex 250, I sold off my 450V2 because it too seemed redundant. For me, one large heli and one small space heli is perfect.

It's not more expensive, officially
Ask your dealer why, but the answer will be because that's what people will pay. Align's pricing makes sense, street prices will vary based on markets.

MAP US pricing on the similarly equipped flybarred super combos (gyro, blades, servos):

Trex 550E KX021005T: $888.99
Trex 600E KX016014: $960.99

Do you seriously expect them to cut pricing on a brand new product that isn't even in stock in most places in the world?

Just give it time for stock to come in and pricing to become competitive.

Unless they are very high C packs, 6S 3000mAh packs would probably get hot and puffy under the current loads. With the same C rating, larger packs can handle more amps; conversely, smaller ones handle less.

20C 3000mAh = 60A
20C 5000mAh = 100A

Go for cooler 6S 5000mah packs.

I can see why 6S isn't good for 600 and up, but a 550? Kind like 4S on a 450 - yeah, you can do it, but 3S is plenty. The amps on the 550 should be fine for almost everyone. Let's just call it a gray zone.

I would fly 6S on the 550 and have a ball. Each to his own.

The 550 is made to run a 600 class power system; 6S is ideal and so a single pack is all anyone should need. The 700E is designed around 12S and so dual packs will be common.

The frame design is perfectly suitable for a single pack. It looks like many other 550 helis on the market because that is a good layout for a 550.

If a 700E layout is important to you in a 550 size, buy a Logo 500.

Cool - thanks. So the key to all day flying with 3 sets of packs is owning a hybrid or running a generator. One more reason to go green!

I own two TP1010Cs with 210 balancers - pretty similar capability charger setup except I need two to do the same as the Duo does with one. I don't own a hybrid yet though.

The 250 and 500 both took ~40 days from the time the factory videos were first shown to the time they started shipping product. Assuming the same timeline for the 550E and 700E, it should be about May 5th for the 550 and April 23rd for the 700E.

I am inclined to agree. Unless the head is different from the 600 and a smaller power system, I can't imagine the AUW being all that much less than the 600. So far we have a shorter boom, smaller frame and canopy and smaller blades. Of course, we speculating that it's a 600 head.

Time will tell.

Based on the Trex 500 and 250 timelines from forum postings, it would be released (on the Align site and initial kits shipping from Taiwan) ~40 days from the date of the test flight videos, or around May 5th.

I believe that they will cut off a good chunk of market if they only offer a 3G flybarless version. If there's a market for both versions (flybar and flybarless), they'll make both. They can always drop the flybar version later if demand drops off; they can even sell 3G upgrades that way.

Shame about your crash. It happens - don't sweat it.

It is most likely your battery/charger setup. 2.5 min. is very low for 2200mAH 3S packs on a 450.

If you're lucky, you're not getting a full charge. If you're not lucky, the batteries are permanently down in capacity.

You should get at least 4-5 minutes on a high performance 450 (3K headspeed). At lower headspeeds (~2400) you should get >6 minutes.

You didn't list your charger, but I would would start there. A good charger will tell you how much it puts back into the battery. To make them last, you should never use more than 80% of your packs rated capacity.

Heat is a big factor as well. Buy an inexpensive temperature gun and measure your pack temperatures after the flight. Do not exceed 115F if you want your packs to last. The center cell will typically get hotter.

Well matched electronics (Motor, ESC and battery) will help. If any components are hot after a flight, then either put in a beefier components or reduce the pinion teeth (select a lower tooth pinion, but don't go too low or you will actaully increase the power requirements due to inefficiences - there is a sweet spot for the motor).

It's a great name to attract and cater to gun enthusiasts. If that's what calguns and the board members felt was the point, then the name is perfect.

I think the potential put off is more than just the name; it's also the gun affilliations throughout the site. The fact that there is a donation feature and NRA is promoted heavily just makes the site that much more political. Again, whatever turns your crank.

What's the link to the discussion on calguns?

Maybe the larger issue is payment alternatives to Paypal. That seems to be an issue of concern for RR members.

Maybe we need "HELIPAL"?

Yeah, I get that, but if they just didn't restrict guns (as Paypal does) and beat Paypal for price (as they seem to do), then they would still service the gun crowd but not turn off the non-gun crowd = more money. That's the part that seems like a missed opportunity/shortsighted.

I guess that's my real point - regulate the behaviours/uses, not the pilot/aircraft.

So, you shouldn't need a license, rather, you should need training and be policed for your behaviour. Don't fly dangerously/respect others.

In the case of the police, theirs is a special use. This aircraft is arguably safe (small electric) relatively speaking and their use of it has demonstrable benefits. Their normal controls (warrant, etc.) should address misuse.

Why anyone would affiliate an otherwise general purpose payment system with guns is beyond me. You'd think they would not skew it to a specific audience so that they could have a larger market potential. Too weird.

The message seems to be that if you're into guns, then they're your payment system of choice. Although there doesn't seem to be anything in their policies limiting it to guns - just stuff about various incompatible uses (acceptable use), all of which seem reasonable. Other than the name and the affiliations, there's nothing there that screams guns.

Of course, the gun affiliation is the owner, Mr. Cannon's , role in the California Gun website listed; but why make that association to a payment system? He must be very passionate about guns, as he is willing to limit his market reach. You have to respect their commitment to their cause, I suppose.

Call it payments.com or similar, don't mention the affiliations with guns (but don't diasallow them either) and they would still serve their goals and open up their market at the same time.

I'm not in the apparent target market (not particularly fond of guns), so I'll pass.

What about gadgets like the Parrot? It transmits video imagery back to your Ipod and that's how you're intended to fly it. It's a UAV except that it's practically limited in range by the strength wireless signal.

This is a complex issue and the low cost puts the technology in the hands of a lot more people.

Just wait until you get a super small, under $100 long-range UAV, then no-one will be able to regulate that effectively. At that point it won't be a safety issue, but instead a privacy issue - that's the real issue. It's just a matter of time IMHO.

Regulate the safety where that applies and prosecute privacy infringement. You can regulate all you want, but if you can't enforce it...

As in light duty, not weight.

The variable is in the tail setup. How much force is need to move the slider under load. (weights, smoothness, etc.). The more powerful servo can overcome more of these variables. Without hands on, it's safer to recommend the beefier servo.

The 420 is light for a 450 - better for the 250 (even then, mixed results). The 520 is more appropriate for a 450 if you want to go with Align.

I have these really warm, thin gloves (Gortex N2S), but the lipos don't perform too well in the cold even if I keep them warm in my coat I guess that's where nitro helis have a edge.

I have just flown smaller helis (Trex 450, Gaui 100 Pro, Walkera 4#3, Trex 250) in our rented gym over the Winter. Works okay, but I'm still rusty come Spring. This is the first Winter indoors with the Trex 250 - I'm looking forward to it.

The GAUI EP100 was ever so slightly smaller. It is the same class heli as a Trex 250 - I've owned and flown both. The GAUI Hurricane 200 is a later version of the original EP100 Pro with many updates including longer 190mm blades and boom. The orignal EP100 with the shorter 160mm blades didn't have much lift; the longer 190mm blades gave it life.

In any case, an EP100, EP 100 Pro, Hurricane 200 v1/V2 and Align Trex 250 are all about the same size and are not going to 3D in your living room comfortably unless you're a super pro.

A submicro is a generally much harder to fly due to the smaller mass and miniscule tolerances.

Living room - not good unless it's huge. Gymasium - now you have possibilities!

You'll probably have to try a submicro CP to see, but I strongly feel that a sim is the best bet to keep the fingers and brain wired for helis over cold winters. The real solution would be to move to a warmer climate - DROOL!

If you're really skilled, you might be able to flip a Walkera 4G3V3 (latest version. Pretty sure that the Novus CP is the same as the earlier 4G3). It's a true CP submicro and is in theory 3D capable.

For most, flying 3D in a living room is best accomplished on a simulator. If you're like most, you'll have to buy something like the 4G3 and find out for yourself.

Big living room?

Watch at YouTube

Maybe a 4G6 - reportedly more stable. Also a "3D" submicro heli.

since you guys are pulling out all the different coax's. Isn't there one that has one set of blades above the heli and the other set below the heli?
Here's one from Youtube

This is a reality of our hobby. We do something that is non-conventional. Peace and quiet is something everyone can relate to - when push comes to shove, conventional wins out over non-conventional. accept this reality and learn to work with it.

At least you aren't dealing with an established flying field - many a club has lost a hard-earned field over noise complaints and encroachment. You can simply find somewhere else to fly or take your chances in the same park by adjusting your flying times.

Unfortunately, you're going have confrontation once in a while in this hobby.

Wag = gain too high (mechanical or electronic)

As the others have said, the ball is too far out. It only needs to be 4.5mm out to get full travel of the slider (mechanical gain) - to get that you'll need to drill a new hole almost right against the servo arm's hub. This is just to get it in the right gain range. Even then you'll still be using a relatively low gain setting (~35% true gain) on your transmitter. On JR, use ATV instead of the gyro menu to get finer resolution for the gain setting - the GP750 needs it to find the sweet spot.

The tail servo setup (4.5mm) and initial gain setting are covered in the newer Trex 250 instruction manuals under the recommended settings/setup section.

On the JR/DX7, 35% true gain is 74% on the gryo menu, +50 using ATV. The recommended settings are based on the ball being 4.5mm out.

There have been other forum-reported cases of the 3D Pro 325 CF blades breaking at the root. You may wish to check that angle out as well.

Of course, there may be no connection at all (perhaps different root causes?), but it's worth a look.

My lesson learned is to remove the power from the wet components ASAP and then dry everything off well.

I got caught in a sudden rain while flying my Raptor 50 and my DX7 got water on it while I landed and ran for cover with my gear. The TX was acting stranegly so I dried the TX the best I could, but I didn't remove the battery from the TX and it shorted - wires melted right through the insulation and destroyed the TX. At least I managed to land before the D7 was fried.

That was an accidental exposure and I was only in it for a minute or so.

Luckily Horizon replaced it for me - very nice of them - but I was without a TX for a month or so during peak flying season (no backup).

If your HK packs came with Deans copies, they're probably older stock. Deans sued them for patent infringement and HK had to stop selling the connectors.

I do appreciate the posting of this type of information. As I stated, I hadn't considered the applicability of NOTAMS to our small, low flying unmanned aircraft.

Seriously - what percentage of R/C pilots check NOTAMs or call their local aerodrome before heading out to fly? Fortunately, many of us check forums daily.

That said, we always land and/or get out of the way when small aircraft or other airborne folks (parachutists, etc.) Are on a path over our fields - but that's part of the Canadian national MAAC safety code.

Even though I am not even remotely affected by this particular notice, this is good info to know. Thanks for posting.

Wow - they're very specific:
C. The following operations are not authorized within this TFR: flight training, practice instrument approaches, aerobatic flight, glider operations, parachute operations, ultralight, hang gliding, balloon operations, agriculture/crop dusting, animal population control flight operations, banner towing operations, model aircraft operations, model rocketry, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
How would the operators of all of these types of aircraft know to check NOTAMs? I had no idea that we needed to check them.

Ouch!!

Isn't it remarkable that both pilots perceive the exact same centerline on the runway and altitude?! Big, wide runway and comparatively small helis. The sky was otherwise empty. The odds against it happening must be very high.

I'm very sorry for your losses. It's so tragic when this happens.

It's really going to depend on your unique setup to a large extent.

On my latest version (~1 month old now) 250 Super Combo, I installed chinese weights - the rest was stock. I used the 37mm bats with decent results. Now I'm running a Hitec 5084MG on the tail and am using K&Bs (unmodified). I couldn't run the K&Bs before - couldn't get the gain setting quite right.

Now with the 5084, I feel pretty confident I could use any of the blades with good results. With this servo, the GP750 seems to have a wider margin in the gain where there is no wag and the tail is not soft.

I'm still tweaking the heli, but so far so good.
