I've started using the wildcat cleaner. I used to have to go over the heli two or three time with alcohol or glass cleaner. The wildcat stuff I find one time does it.

Regarding the Simply Green. Years ago I worked at a FBO and we used it (a non branded alternative) to clean parts. FAA gig'd us on that due to corrosive propoerties (even though we cleaned the parts with alchol after the Simply Green). We ended up using Varsol Solvent exlusively.

For cleaning thread lock from screws and other small parts, has anyone tried using the various ultrasonic cleaners?

It should say in the GV-1 manual, thats what I went by to set it up. I used the 3pos switch to do it, bottom posion is off, middle pos is RPM1 and 3 pos is RPM2.
Wedge, why not just assign the different RPMs to the various flight modes?

If you do read the FAR you will see that model aircraft and their pilots are required to comply with the FAR (although very few are applicable).

FAR 1 Defines Aircraft as - "Aircraft means a device that is used or intended to be used for flight in the air."

FAR 91.1 Applicability - "Except as provided in paragraphs (b) and (c) of this section and ┬ž┬ž91.701 and 91.703, this part prescribes rules governing the operation of aircraft (other than moored balloons, kites, unmanned rockets, and unmanned free balloons, which are governed by part 101 of this chapter, and ultralight vehicles operated in accordance with part 103 of this chapter) within the United States, including the waters within 3 nautical miles of the U.S. coast."

As an example of how the FARs are applicable are NOTAMs. During the Democratic and Republican conventions last year, NOTAMs where issued that prohibited all aircraft flight with 50 miles. The NOTAM actually included a clarification that "aircraft" included models intended for flight.

I've also ask the folks who draft TFR (Temporary Flight Restrictions) used to close airspace in the vicinity of the president and other such things. They advised that in their opinion a TFR stating that "all flight was prohibited" did also include models.

If you look at the AMA website they have even included a link to the FAA NOTAM system due to this.

The FAA is famous for (or more properly infamous) for changing rules by interpretation. It takes so long to get a new FAR through the required processes that its easier for them to simply interpret the rule a different way.

Do you know what FAR, FAA Order, Advisory Cir, or Notice they are referencing.

One scary new trend is that a number of TFR's issued since 9/11 have referenced RC models.

Perhaps the impound could be moved to the flight line and pins could only be provide for those who are ready to fly.
Ace Dude

I think you have a great suggestion here. Impound basically becomes a gateway you have to pass through to gain access to the flight line. Anyone entering or leaving the flight line should be required to go throught the impound area to drop of the freq.

As an added benefit this could put abit of control over the crowds of people and carts at some of the flight stations. The carts while handy transportation are also very annoying with allot of folks using them as mobile lawn chairs, stopping in the best viewing spots, and thus blocking the view of the bulk of the folks who are back in the canopy line.

Do you have any stat as to how long a freq was typically out, possibly a histogram distribution?

Based on the number of checkouts and a 25 minute limit there should have been plenty of freq availability.

What about multiple impounds maybe three or six... all down the flight line. Different impounds ONLY carry a range of frequencies. (Impound A: 11~20, Impound B: 21~30, etc. )
My impression was the software in they had in use was pretty close to this capability. The IN desk and OUT desk had seperate PCs that updated the same FREQ. Setting up WiFi to allow for a few seperate impounds would seem a logical progression to what has been developed already.

I had the same experience. In every instance when i tried to get a freq someone already had it out for in excess of 40 minutes. In a few cases it had been out for 60. I have a synth setup, but when you get the freq the time to remove canopy, unwrap the receiver, change freq, and then put everything togheter ends up making it even more difficult to get the pager back within the allocated 25 minutes (yes, i know its time to buy a 14mz).

I think the two main things they could do.

1. Have two impounds. Since they track the freq on PC, they could simply network the two (or more) impounds and each impound would know what was or was not available. This would help out that folks on both ends of the flight line would be closer to impound and hopefully reduce dead time. This could help out with the second (F3C) site. I drove over and noticed that noone seemed to be flying. Having the second site on the same frew control system help get the 2 reserved freq into play at the main site and give the second site the same level of access as the primary site.

2. Suspend freq privileges for freq hogs. You stay out more then X minutes, you loose freq privileges for the remainder of the day. If you don't respond to a page to return a freq within 5 minutes, you loose your privilege's for the remainder of the event.

Do keep in mind that whether you find there is interference or not you will need a formal frequency agreement. Without one your violating AMA Safety Code and thus AMA insurance would be invalid.

If you find that thier is no interference you still need an agreement saying that you have tested that and that both clubs agree. The safeycode all say that if you agree thier is not interference that the agreement must include a test report, but I cannot find anything saying how technical this report must be.

Also the agreement and report must be on file with AMA.

I tried flying at a plank club (10 minutes from my house) with a very nice f ield. Ruled thier dont allow heli hovering except for take off and landing, and of 5 pilot positions heli are only allow to fly from position 1 while plank can fly at any of the positions.

Well when i try to fly the planker always grab position 1 to make sure I could not fly.

I gave up and now drive an hour to a heli only club.

"Some clubs have tried to ban helo but there AMA charters reconize model aircraft (of all types) not just RC planes. To change this the club has to do a bylaws change which requires a majority vote of 75% of the club to vote in favor, and the old timers usually don't have that majority."

They don't need to go to these efforts. One local club only allows heli's to be flown from ONE of the pilot stations, does not allow heli training, and only allow "momentary" periods of hovering.

Of course they dont see any problem with the Planks hovering over the runway.

Althought thier bylaws technocially allow helis, the field rules are such that they may as well just ban them.

In the case of the car the manufactor does not stop supporting the previous model. In the case of software the vendor generally stops providing support for previous. Typcialy software vendoer provide lower cost upgrade paths for a combination of two of two reasona;

1. Insure current customers stay with that vender. If I have to pay full price for each new release then can concider the option of changing vendors. If I get a low cost upgrade then I probably stay with the vendor I have.

2. One of the highest costs in software is support (which includes actual user support and developing patchs to keep up with bugs, OS changes, and new types of HW). A software vendor has several options
a. Continue to support the product for the long haul (expensive)
b. Set a limit on how long the product will be supported (pisses off customers.
c. Provide a free or low cost upgrade to get as many people off the old version so they really wont care when you stop supporting it.

It should also be noted that many software vendors also provide cross upgrades. If you own a product in a specific category from another vender, they will give you a low cost path to switch.
The incremental cost for a software vendor to provide this is quite low (especialy if they do electronic delivery). Sim's are abit of a different model since thier is a hardware component to the product.

As for why KE is making everyone but the new controller for G3, my bet is has to do with the license controls embedded in the controller. I suspect that if they allow the G2 controller to activate G3 they may feel it will be harder to control unlicensed usage.

The idea of integrationg a for fee flying feild and integrated shop is excellent. The model certainly seems to work with RC cars as mentioned. I've also seen it work with slot cars. If you think about it, its also not far off the concept of a golf, tennis, or other sport Pro Shop.

I wonder if this business model would not help establish more flying fields.
