Yeah, it's dying. I think the industry is trying to keep it around and you still have many nitro fans. I think it'll be around a long time, but let's face it. Once battery technology caught up, Nitro has taken a back seat. Most helis are electric now. The simplicity and cleanliness of it are huge contributors to that. Yes, nitro is cool, but there's a lot of added work-overhead that goes into that extra cool factor. For most of us, it's just not worth it.

Thanks for the kind words all! I'm a member there and can't wait for the weekends to roll around so I can get back out there. Although I haven't done much more than pay my dues, I'm very thankful to those who've made this field possible and have put in the work to make it a great place to hang out.

And BTW, their goal is not to protect citizens privacy. Their goal is to protect them. Nothing more.

They don't care about your privacy when you're getting frisked by the TSA.

They don't care about your privacy when they implement unconstitutional check-points.

They don't care about your privacy when they make it legal to wiretap American citizens.

They're liars and complete scum and manipulate the dumb to spread and enforce their methods of tyranny.

In other words, politicians suck.

I think nitro has a bigger wow factor and it certainly appeals to me more for that... But it's hard to dismiss the simplicity of plugging in a motor and not worrying about exhaust setup, motor tuning and all that. For me the batteries vs nitro fuel is really not enough to convince me one is better than the other.

I just hope nitro doesn't die out. It needs to stick around imo and that successful "green heli" company needs to make a nitro version of their popular heli and stop pretending like nitro is an endangered species.

That was my first heli... I watched it skid across the ground with the head spooled up as I had lost control due to the on/off switch vibrating itself into the "off" position. I think it ran out of fuel and never did any damage. Can't remember what happened to that heli though.

I used to fly years ago... Was out today flying my TRex 450 which only has a about 7 flights on it. Did a piro-flip on my third flight today.

So yeah, it comes back... However, for me, it never left... I fly on the sim all the time for fun. I could never give up RC for good. I have to have something and the sim has filled that void since I last flew choppers in 2005ish.

I flew helis back in the day. Just returning to the hobby after 6 or so yesrs away from it. I had a Hiribo Freya so I've flown the bigger stuff before. during this time I've always had my sim and flew on it.

I currently have planks and a couple of small helis. Looking to get something bigger. This thread keeps me going back and forth on my decision.haha

Wow, lots of info still... But it seems the 700 makes more sense considering the cost is not that much different but the stability, "presenece" and power factors are worth it.

Thanks!

Are the cost of batteries between the two different? I'd imagine the other things like servos, ESC and Motor are pretty similar so not much cost difference there?

I guess I'd rather go 700 but that 600 SX looks pretty sweet. So I was considering it.

600 vs 700
Can anyone list any pluses or minuses between these two heli sizes? I'm looking for my next electric and currently own a 450. If I go 600 I'm pretty certain it will be the Mikado 600SX. If I go 700, I'm unsure of what to choose. But I still haven't settled on the size. What are some things I need to consider? Or, are they too similar the differences are only minor?

Thanks!

Guess I need a header tank.
So, I was flying my Evo 90 around and having a blast then I brought it in low for some low tumbles and rolls and inverted hovering... Checked the tank, saw some fuel still in there so I flipped it over and was hovering inverted about 3 to 5 feet off the deck. Then, yeah, it died.. I quickly hit throttle hold and flipped it over and landed it. It hit pretty hard so it broke one of the skids. I'm going to check the spindle and the main shaft anyway, but I think they're going to be alright.

So, yeah, I'm glad I saved it but if I had a header tank, this most likely would not have happened.

Okay cool... I'm running a 500t in combination with an 8700G on my Evo 90... Just wanted to make sure I was thinking through this correctly. After exiting loops it wanted to wag some and the piro rate is a little too slow for my taste.

Thanks!

Gyro gain and piro speed
Can someone verify if I have this correct? The more gain the gyro has, the slower the piro rate correct? So, it takes some fine tuning to get the piro rate you want by adjusting the ATV's on the rudder while also adjusting the gain to get the holding power you want on the tail... Is this correct?

Thanks,
J

Did some hang glider training a few times and loved it. Unfortunately, in Oklahoma it's not very popular because of the lack of cliffs.

I'd definitely be pursuing it if I lived in a place that had the topology for it.

Not being a gasoline guy, I sure don't know if it's worth it or not.

So we compared it to a glow engine, but how does it fair against other gasoline engines in the power and weight department?

What about those 55 engines? More power for a 50 size... Can't be a bad thing.

I'm not understanding the CA remover method..?? The magnent is flush and is also the same size as the hole that was in the fan. I had to press it in to get it flush. Are you saying the CA remover will find its way to the CA anyway?

You know when you cut wood, you measure, then you measure again, then you measure again, and then you cut? Well, I figured I would use the same philosophy when putting in the GV-1 magnent into the fan and then of course, I'd seal the deal by putting a ample dose of CA on the backside of the magnent.... because after all, I knew it was right! Well, I put the wrong dang side in! GEEEEEEZZZ!!!

So, I figure it would just be easier to pull the motor, disassemble the fan and freaking by a new fan and a new magnent. Geez, what a bummer!

Unless you all know of some magical way to remove the dang thing... I guess that's what I'll be working on after the new stuff arrives.

Thanks for the info fellas... I do run YS 91 motors so that's interesting to know... I think I'll fly without it for a while and then put one on to see if I can any differences. I do run one on my X-Spec but I have always run one on my X-Spec (because most people do so I did but didn't really know why, which is why I asked ), with this new Evo 90 I'm just going to try without first to see if I notice anything.

Header Tanks... Are they really necessary?
I've heard they keep the air bubbles out but then pilots like Curtis YoungBlood don't use them... Sure you could fly longer, but really, how much longer? I know some use them for a visual to see how much fuel is left, but couldn't you just eye the main tank instead? Do they assist for long periods of inverted hovering? Could a header tank cause more problems then what they offer?

Just looking for some opinions here.
Thanks,
J

Well then lets take the safety aspect out of it.. Yes I think it is a good idea to fly our toy RC Helis especialy after just learning on a SIM in front of a large crowd at a full scale airshow.
[quote]The problem being that there may be an RC Pilot that is not very proficient (equal orientaion in all angles right side up and inverted)
Just to clearify, I'm no newbie. I simply said, that I would like to pursue it after my sim skills transfer over to reality (such as the piro funnel, or snake maneuver). After all, isn't this what a sim is for, to try new things on and then move over to real RC??? Or does flying a sim mean you're a newbie by default?

Thanks,
J

Flying Demo's At Full Scale Air-Shows
Who here has done it? How was the experience? I think this would be great! I'd love to do this once my sim skills transfer over to real life.

I just think flying for a lot of people that have not been exposed to RC Heli flight would be a lot of fun. And, in that environment, could possibly introduce the hobby to people who'd want to give it a go.

Anyone know of any video footage of someone doing a demo at a big air-show?
