Electric?
15 minutes?
1/4 scale?

Ec120 was design for 12s...up to 22 kg...

With lipo technology, there is no way to fly this 22 kg for 15 min.

If you want to fly more than 6 min, try Vario petrol.

I am sure Sandy can pull more then 6 minuets from his EC 120.. I dare to say he is approaching 15 however.

Keep us posted.

My "scaled up" Vario EC-120 weighs about 49.5 lbs ready to fly. That is with FOUR Thunder Power Pro Lite 6S 6000mAh packs onboard configured to 12S 12,000mAh. I am using a very efficient Kontronik Pyro 800 motor and Cool Kosmik ESC. I run a main rotor rpm of 850 using "governor store" mode.

I log every flight for time flown, Telemetry battery consumption, pack set used, and actual mA charged back in to each battery pack. I typically fly to 30% battery capacity remaining to get better battery life.

My average flight consumes about 1,000 mAh / minute.

If you were just going to hover or fly slowly in ground effect with little or no wind, and you stripped out all scale detail and other "extra weight", and added more battery capacity, you MAY get a flight at 15 minutes, but you would probably damage the batteries.

Based on my experience, getting this model above 50 lbs seriously affects the solid tail control that I have now, and would greatly reduce your ability to power the helicopter out of a difficult situation.

Just my 2 cents worth based on almost 23 hours of flight time on this model.

Very good information and I concord.

I did some Calc and this is what I got...

Ec120

Volts 44.4
Amps 62

Power 2765 watts, 3.71 HP
Power loading 0.136 HP/ft^2
Trust loading 16.162 lbs/HP
Lift 60 lbs
Drag 29.75 lbs ( 1 ft/sec)

Flight time 6 min
Lipo cap 12500 mAH
1038 mAH /min

If you want to fly for 15 min, you will need a lipo cap arrangement of 32000 mAH. That is a lot of lipos in parallel arrangement.
That is, your config three times...

Rojoalfa,
I respectfully disagree with you based on my actual data.
Very simply, I noted 1,000mAh/minute ACTUAL data from my Vario EC-120. 15 minutes will consume 15,000mA out of the batteries. If 20,000mA packs could be installed at the same all up flying weight as mine, then then that would leave 20% battery capacity remaining.
If he can not get the weight the same as mine with 20,000 mA packs on board, you will get to what would call diminishing returns. More weight needs more power which needs more batteries which add weight which needs more power and so on and so on. Plus the tail control will be diminished, and the blades will closer to stall pitch.

Correct!

That is why I said on some post above, that 15 minutes of flight is not posible.

Vario Petrol would be the choice.

Reaper1,
You would need two of those packs to get 12S 22,000mA.
As I noted a few times it is all about flying weight. If your model can be around 49 - 50 lbs ready to fly with two of those packs onboard you may get what you want. if you are 55 lbs + with those packs on board, it may not work for you.

Good luck,

Sandy

Grim,
My Vario 1/4 scale EC-120 is electric.
My Starwood Lama is turbine. I have 65 total turbine HOURS on the Lama.

I can fly a safe 16 minutes starting with 3 liters of kerosene onboard with the Lama, which is MUCH lighter than the EC-120. The EC-120 requires a larger, thirstier turbine then my Starwood Lama.
