Somebody Stop Me...
So... I build a new helicopter about every 3 or 4 years. I've been doing that for about 30 years now. I build models I really like and because used models sell for about 50¢ on the dollar, I tend to keep them. The results of all that is I've got about 10 perfectly good, really nice, helicopters around here ready to go to the field. All of them I've had since new and they are models that are special to me.

Nice! Lucky me!

So what's the problem?.?. Here's the problem... I've really got the itch to buy a new kit. The last model I built was my Align 700XN a few years ago (and it is flying very nicely) so there is absolutely no reason for me to build another model. But the fact that I don't need a new model doesn't change the fact that I'm jonesing to cut the shrink wrap off a new kit. There is something about "new" that comes up every so often and I feel the pull to build another model. If I got a new model it would simply be for the purpose of acquiring something new.

Making it harder for me to reconcile all this is that, in the past, I've been critical of some people in this hobby that are in it only for the rush that comes from seeing the UPS truck.

But I'm worried. I'm finding myself lurking in the "kit" section of on line retailers far too much lately. I've seen me pull this trick before and it ends badly. I need my helicopters anonymous support group to stop me. I need an intervention before there is another(!) model helicopter in my house. Like alcoholics, I've got a lot of excuses as to why I need just one more but honestly, they are all a little hollow.

I might add that if I keep adding a Futaba 32MZ to my cart and then not checking out, I'm going to get a reputation with online sellers. It's not just a new kit that's the problem. It's the need for something "new".

Suggestions welcome...

Go ahead and order. Only, order two. That way you'll put off the itch for at least another eight years.

BTW, your 50 cents on the dollar is way off. At a swap meet yesterday I bought a bent frame XL that I don't think has been flown, with a OS 70 and servos; plus an old Century Hawk with servos and OS 32; plus a 30 size Bell 222 fiberglass kit all for $25. That puts me back up to 45 machines (I've been doing helis since the 70's). All that and I've been trying to thin the herd. As you mention, thinning the herd is tough when you know that you'll be lucky to get 25% of the value and you still have to build a box in order to pack the thing up to ship it off.
The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

How is that helping? You're the kind of guy that'd hand a drownings man an anchor.

Yeah. 50¢ on the dollar was a sad effort to hide how little used helicopters really sell for. When I build a model I typically install exactly the components I want. That usually means OS, Futaba, MKS, etc. The exact components aren't important. What is important is that the cost of most of my models far exceeds what the used market is willing to pay. Given that most of my models cost between 2 and $3,000 to build and I can't get pennies for them, I just keep collecting more and more models.

And yet, defying all logic, I feel the strong pull to build another. That's somewhat the point of this thread.

I'll try to help ya , Although I think I would have better luck finding a druggie on the streets of South Bend and help him get off opioids !!!!
Take one of your models that needs a little rework ... or isn't your favorite and redo its paint scheme and rivet detail .. add some working maps / guages in the cockpit // with moving pilots .. open some compartments .. add some service doors .. that will be almost like building one ,,, yet not as much money involved and you learn some new skills in the process..ANNNNNND ,,,,,you take care of the "NEEEEEEED "

IMHO, Incurable desease...

I can't help you because I had the same problem...

In Spanish we said.. "el gusano del hobby te pico... No hay cura para eso"...

"no cure for that... The Hobby's worm did bite you... "

You can leave the Hobby for a while but... You just need a little push to comeback... As a repeat infringer!

Do we need to go to a medical institution for... Help?

Maybe...

Do what I did and buy a Quest Caliber ZG. It was a life changing experience.

Funny thing for me is that I have only two helicopters now which is the fewest I’ve owned in years. They’re both my favourites, my Ergo 30 and my Caliber ZG.

I’d love to buy something with that new electronics smell, mmmmm yummy!

Building the birds to me, is as fun and engaging as flying them. The winter time in New England brings about the addiction like the fall brings the flu! Now, I look at the end of flying season as the beginning of building (project) season!

Sometimes I'm able to postpone the inevitable "next" model with a new set of blades or a set of servos for an older model. That can satisfy the need to wrench on something and keep me going to the field to see how the new stuff flies - for a while. But eventually I drift back to the calling of new bearing blocks and the smell of Loctite.

I know I'm in trouble when I start asking not "Should I build...?" but "What should I build...?" As it is now, I've morphed from asking "Should I build another helicopter..?" to "Which should I build - an X-Cell gasser or a 6S 550ish electric...?" And using the junkies logic, I need just one more and that'll be it.

Great bird! I have had one since 2015 and it is great! Great engineering great bearings, soo light! Mine is geared to mod 1 gearing and a KDE direct 600xf motor. Flight time-meh, power gobs of it.
A great 550 class heli!

Bad choices
Your first issue is coming to this group for help with this problem.

RR group has never failed to help me with and issue related to heli setup, needing a laugh or smart ass replies.

The subject of Heli Abstinence may be beyond our grasp.

**by the way I vote for a new heli. Changing radios is a PITA.

Good luck. I am in Louisiana, not too far for an intervention if truly needed.

My only suggestion is find a used vintage bird, cheap as chips, a real basket case and the spend the next four years stripping to the last nut and bolt, and restoring it to its former glory, the satisfaction of doing this is far greater than buying a brand new one,

+1 for a vintage or classic

My Ergo 30 was cheap as chips and brand new. I built it with new modern electronics and 23 years of wisdom. Careful shimming and setup has produced a helicopter that is a true delight to fly. It’s smooth as silk and those soft dampers produce a blissfully relaxing experience that is almost like a park flyer. The OS32 is so smooth it’s almost electric.

It's like telling someone who's in a casino in Las Vegas not to gamble. Buy one, you only live once. If you feel guilty sell one you haven't flown in some time.Wayne - Fly it like you stole it! You're in good hands with Runryder!

At the moment there is an epic battle going on. The voice that is shouting "enjoy the excess of models you already own", is winning - but it is a seesaw, ebb-and-flow battle royal. As my mouse hovers over "complete order" button, I back away, drink a cup of coffee (or beer... depending on which end of the day it is), and try to become distracted with some task I've been putting off. Cooking something in the kitchen or on the grill works. Mowing the lawn has so far managed to postpone the inevitable. God help me but sometimes I talk to my wife or do the crossword. Sometimes I even take one of my models to a field and try to learn how to fly it. Anything to avoid that lllaaasssttt mouse click.
