I read, somewhere, a rule of thumbs...

You need 1 HP to lift 5.1 lbs on a helicopter.

So, for 55 lbs you need:

55 lb / (5.1 lb/HP)

10.78 HP... Let say 12 HP.

12 HP x 745 Watts/HP

8940 watts, let say 9000 watts.

Answer :

You need a motor that could handle at least 9000 watts or 12 Horsepower.

Wow. That is quite a project. Is this a hobby project or an industrial application?

Beyond the motor requirements, I'm trying to picture what the battery and ESC will look like. 55lbs for 20 minutes... Is that possible? I could see it in a fixed wing but it sound ambitious for a rotary wing.

Well, for 9000 watts, you will have several combinations...

Suppose you Have a lipo with 14 cells, 3.7 volts x 14 = 51.8 volts.

Your Amps requeriment:
9000 watts / 51.8 volts = 173 A

Big electric motor...
14S
200 amp

Manufacturer: Scorpion
SCORPION HKIII-5040-530kv (8mm shaft)

Hi,
All sounds good. What kind of dynamic performance will you be expecting from this aerial platform? As we all know power supply is a major issue with electrics ?

Big picture!

The problem is not the power plant.
You are going to find motor, ESC, "a pile" of lipo packs and other stuff.

The big problem is the Pot & Boom structure... main rotor grips, blades and other minor things...

By the time you totalize every penny involve, you are going to realize that you need to buy a dedicated helicopter for that specific job... and it is going to be a Gasser helicopter!

Problem is there's no way to mount a gasoline on a turbine version. I would stick with a turbine but the 25 hour interval will not be self-sufficient of longevity
The heli can carry 30 pounds a turbine

Our friend need an option for his Xlc Vario w/turbine.

The only way to do that is going to an electric conversion.

The problem for this conversion is flight time. You need to look for lipo packs with high capacity... More than 20.000 mAH, 60C or more...

I don't think this conversion works as expected.

To do a gas conversion is to modify bottom motor base for a RC format Zenoah, belts, shafts, spurs, pinions... Etc.
We don't know if Vario have this order... Maybe...

The scale heli community generally uses a figure of 50 watts/lb. to hover in a scale-like fashion, 55lbs. x 50 watts/lb. = 2750 watts.

2750 watts/44.4v(@12s)= 62A x 1/3hr= about 20 Ah or 20,000mAh 12S battery.

2750 watts is just 4 HP...

If just wanting to cruise around and spray, it won't take nearly as much power as many think. A somewhat normal motor in the 20 ounce range should work fine, although a little larger to dissipate heat would be good. Look up some of the scale stuff. Here is Darryl Sprayberry's Jet ranger from a few years ago.

Watch at YouTube

He's done many large (and heavy) helis like this. This is 42 lbs, flying on 12S and a 5035 motor, only using an 80 amp esc. If course it's using long blades and low rpms which helps immensely. At some events I've seen him fly this 10+ minutes and it's not optimized for duration as they only need 6~8 minutes for a scale flight. Would easily tote another set of packs and near double duration (not really double as you lose a little due to the increased power needed due to the weight increase so the math isn't linear with batt capacity usage). Long blades and low rpms is the key. Low rpm and long blades and you can easily fly at well below 50 watts/lb as some people think is required. Not the same, but as an example, my low rpm 700, which really isn't that low anymore (I've sped it up to 1200+ to get the tail to work better), flies on 12s 4350 packs. Hovers at 9 amps and only hits the occassional peak of 60 amps doing smooth "old school" 3D (16 degrees pitch). That's a "smooth-aerobatics" machine, not a hover-around crop sprayer, and hover-only is roughly 40 watts/lb.

So my question...

I can understand the need for atonomus controle but why an xlc.

If it's industrial you really need a larger airframe.

I'd just convert a a small kit experimental heli like a miskito or rotaway to rc.

Would have a lot more payload and could fuel and fly all day while maintaining a small Arial platform in small fields.

Anyway just a thought xlc is cool but you will push even it's limits electric or turbine.
