What's everyone using for nitro fuel?
Like the title says, what's everyone using for fuel?? I used to use Magnum, I ordered FHS last year and just ordered another 5 gallons of 30% (about $39 a gallon).

I was going to make my own, but the shipping cost of Nitromethane is prohibitive.

I quit using 30% some time ago. 15% is significantly cheaper and you don't need to run 15% as rich as with 30% so there is more bang to the buck. I'm also old enough that my flying is straightforward; I don't try to be a Curtis any more, I just try to bring everybody home in one piece.

My LHS sells 15% heli fuel to our club for $30 per gal. We buy several cases per month but the quantity has diminished over the years due to lessening interest in R/C anything and the switch to electric by the guys who still want mega power.
The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

If your LHS in Mass does not have it, you can order it from Amain Hobbies:

Where do you buy the Nitro?
In the past I bought nitro from World Wide Racing. They are out of business.

Not only are they out of business, but it has gotten a LOT harder to buy 100% nitro. It is considered a Chemical Of Opportunity (COT) and there is considerable registration and paperwork involved with its purchase.

Most recently I have bought from VPRacing. They sell a product called Nitro50 which is a 50/50 mix of nitro and VP's methanol. I have been using VP's M1 methanol for some time and been pleased with it so premixing it with my nitro is not a problem. (I was going to mix the two anyway.) By buying premixed nitro I was able to bypass much of the paperwork and registration.

As you noted in your first post, shipping for small quantities will kill you. I buy enough not only for myself, but for my friends and club members too. By doing so I reduce the shipping cost per gallon and drum pricing for ingredients is substantially less than a 5 gallon pail. Of course there is the added benefit that we all can fly without worrying about where to get fuel.

Cool power 30%!!!

Also, I prepare my own mix with castor oil, klotz oil, turbine oil, methanol and "cool power 30%" to supply nitro.

I have used Cool Power since 1978. Back in the day it was call FAI same color as the 15% green color. It had less nitro. In the early 80's I started to use the 15%. In 85 I went to 30% cool power really good stuff. Then 2018 switch to VP 30% fuel. Not sure yet what to think about it. I know one of my engines that ran on cool power for years ( 15 +) doesn't like it. I'm going to try it with a brand new SX WC engine The color is throwing me. It look like window wash or windex.
Do they still make the stuff you the fuel to make it smell like grape , banana or rootbeer?

Thanks
Dan

Yes they do. Search for "Manhattan Oil". The place I used to buy from is out of business but you can get it other places. Below is one such place.

$600- How much did you start with? You say you've got 2 cases left (8 gallons) how much fuel did $600 originally buy?

wjvail,
It was over $600.00 just for the two cases (8gals). We have to pay import duty and VAT on the final invoice of getting it here.
My reason for posting was to let you guys know what it takes to get fuel here! Obviously yours is cheaper in the US...but you still get taxed in many other ways I suppose.
It's so sad that our fuel has to be this expensive! When you look at how other components of our hobby have improved with little to no cost increase over the years.
A good example would be radios. It's incredible what one of the new radios can do now compared to the same priced radio of yesteryear.
The lot I got is not a lot, but I thank God a lot for the lot I got!

I run VP 30%. Cases are 6gal and cost $190 so about $33 a gallon. I get it from the local VP distributor in Eliot ME. Call and tell them what I want, it comes on a truck with the rest of their order and I go get it.

I’m actually switching to 23.5%, that was $180 a case. I have 5 more cases coming next week.
