What tail gyro to use with old mechanical Futaba FP-G153 BB?
Hi all,

I am restoring my old Shuttle .The mechanical gyro is still there but all servos have been used for other projects. I cannot recall what (best) analogue servo I could use with this mechanical gyro. I plan to do the old revolution mixing . I am trying to see what flying with old equipment is like. Would a coreless Futaba S9001 be the most suited that's still available today?
Thanks.

I fly old vintage machines myself and use the old analog mechanical rate gyros. ANY servo will work, the more slop free, the better.

Nice project.

Remember to Install a Lipo 2S, 2500 mAH, with regulator, 6 Amps.

That mechanical gyro is hungry with mAH...

Welp... The answer probably depends on what you hope to accomplish. Today, any standard servo will probably be better than the servos used when that gyro was new.

If you're building a "correct for period" model, you probably want something like a Futaba S5101. My first dedicated helicopter radio was was a Futaba 7UHP and it shipped with 5 x S5101 servos and a "high capacity" 600 mAh NiCa battery. Horrible specs by today's standards.

Remember- The good ol' days weren't that good.

If any of you guys remember, can I adjust the rates remotely using a separate channel whilst in flight or is it just using the landing gear channel , with adjustments already pre-determined on the trimmer box ?

Bill, you don't see those old U pipes very often now. I still have one on my Baronstar 55, mounted under the bottom of the heli on a rear exhaust engine. Are those current pictured of that Xcell? If so it looks to be in great shape. Like you, back in the day of Kraft, Futaba, and JR mechanical gyros, all I, and my flying friends, ever used was the standard servos and 600 mah batteries that came with the radios. That worked and was way better than flying with no gyro. After the first piezo gyros came out we started using faster servos and bigger battery packs.Allen Dye
