ZENOAH 26PUH COOLING PROBLEM for UH-1D
Dear all,
I build third-party mechanics using zenaoh 26puh engine for my vario UH-1D helicopter. After flying 2 minutes engine's power will be reduced and can't fly again .I found engine's temperature is very high.Maybe this issue to result in power sonsumption I think.Does anyone have experience to solve this thorny problem?Very thankful.

Lack of cooling. Vario gas fuselages have a fan attached to the bottom of the motor to take hot air out of the fuselage, to keep it cooler to avoid the problem you are having now.

I know. That is your problem. Lack of a cooling fan to remove hot air from the fuselage. Your mechanics do not provide for this, so too much hot air is trapped inside the fuselage overheating the motor. Even if you left the doors off the helicopter, it may still overheat from the motor and exhaust you have mounted in the fuselage. Unless you get cooling air in, and hot air out, it is not going to work.

I would suggest buying two cheap castle fans (20 bucks) and have some type of opening in the front to pull fresh air in and then one in the rear or opposite side of exhaust pulling hot air out the back, I’m sure there would be significant air flow through the mechanics and drivetrain. I just installed one of these on my goblin speed and am pretty impressed for a cheap little fan unit.

PUH format on fuselages require special attention. That is why usually, modellers prefer RC format.

Carey Shurley did a very good explanation of this formats.

Forcing PUH on fuselages is not a good practice.

The old Hirobos had a cut out in the bottom of the fuslage with a mesh screen for just this problem
the other solution is to put an ecs fan at the bottom and use it as an exhaust fan to draw the heat away from the inside also another in the fuslage exhaust
Just my 2 cents.

That is correct.
Every brand make fuselages according to their kits.

The main problem is when you try to put a third-party brand into a different fuselage.

Some assembly is required... Cutting, drilling, pasting things, cooling...

Most of the time, if you don't know or don't take care, you finished with a motor burn out or wasted...

If it is not too much of a problem, could you show some pictures of your setup and maybe we could suggest some possible solutions. I will try and take some pictures of what I did to my scale models with the RC Zenoah engine in it.
Thanks,
Tim

Hey Chuck, thanks for sending the pictures. Wow, it amazing how you got those mechanics into that fuselage. Well done... From what I see so far...it looks like the air that is being drawn in by the engines cooling fan is mainly being heated by the exhaust manifold. So instead of cooling the engine with cool air, the engine fan is blowing hot air on the cooling fins of the engine and then it is only a matter of time before the engine overheats and shuts down. I think what might help a little is to make a cowling to isolate and separate the exhaust manifold from where the cooling air is being drawn into the engine. Ideally a cool air duct would be the best if that was ever possible. Also the making of a extended cowling to guide the hot air out of the fuselage that starts from where the plastic cowling ends over the engine. I think anything that you can think of that will direct cool air in and hot air out of the fuselage would improve your situation. Let me see if can get some of my pictures on here.

Thanks,

Tim

Here are some pictures of my setup and with the thin aluminum cowlings I made. I also used some aluminized heat barrier where I thought it was needed.
I hope this helps you.

Don't get confused.

We are talking about motor format in a fuselage.

Different approach are for 26PUH and 26RC

As Mr Shurley explain...

/

RC format is more efficient ( left side).
PUH format is less efficient ( right side).

Here, we are talking about how to handle a fuselage with PUH format.

Yes Rojoalfa, you are correct about the efficiency of air flow between the two types of engine formats. This is the reason why I used the RC gas engine format in my models. The suggestions of air flow that I mentioned to Chuck was to help his current situation when using a less efficient cooling air flow engine format.

As far as I know, gas engine helicopter mechanics are made specifically for one format only. So you could not fit an RC format gas engine in your mechanics that was made for a PUH format gas engine.

Sorry Chuck, my UH-1 Huey uses a RC gas engine. Pictures are in my gallery. I don't have any cowlings setup in my Huey. But I do fly with the doors open. With school closed because of the virus, maybe I will have some time to make an exhaust air flow cowling for my Huey.

Here is the manual for your fuselage i believe. Scroll through and you can see how the mechanics are placed and where the fan and other items are located.https://www.vario-helicopter.biz/d/manual/2050.pdf
