Taxes, they sure got my son this year
so my Son has to pay in a fine of 10,000 this year to the IRS.

it took my son almost 4 years to legally bring his Philippine wife to America. she has a green card and she works.
well she got Immigrant subsidies to help pay her health insurance. well the 2 made $3200 over the cutoff for the year's-end income. so they now got a find of $10,000.

the thing is what were they to do ? should they have just stop working the last 5 weeks of 2019, just walk away from their jobs so they would not be over the cutoff point, they would have lost their jobs if they did ? or maybe the IRS would have been happy if my son and daughter in-law just worked the last 5 weeks of 2019 with no pay.

how crazy is this

Wow, I am so sorry to hear this. My wife is a Filipina as well, but she proudly became a US Citizen a few months ago. Sorry to hear all of this.

sjgusmc21 thank you for the nice reply ! my daughter in-law has only been here about 2&1/2 years. she is very sweet and my wife and I can see clearly now that she has come to love my son very much. and she has a close friend that also came to the USA before she did, so they get to see each other a few times a year.
I remember you saying a few years ago that your wife has worked hard and has received her citizenship, good for her !! I think I know 1 thing about your wife, she misses her Filipino food, they all do.

Gearhead, OMG, nothing but Filipino food! And I wear it quite nicely around my waste! My wife doesn't have any blood family here, but the friends we have made, they would give us their last dollar if we asked. Very tight knit groups and ALWAYS ton's of food and fun. But watch out for that 'tampo', it'll get you!

I saw my son today, he said he can get the fine reduced some, it depends on how much he went over the cutoff point

thanks for asking !

I pay an accountant to do our taxes. Last year our return was quite a bit less than I expected. It was noticeably less than it had been in years past. When I asked why, they sat down with me and showed me that I had actually paid less total taxes. The reason I didn't get as large of a return as I had in the past was that the Federal Government had withheld less.

When this administration says "Americans are keeping more of their money", they are, in part, saying the Government is not taking out as much and then giving it back as some sort of gift April 15th.

When I get a tax refund of $12,000, my first reaction isn't that I've somehow won the Pick Five Lottery. My reaction is (and it should be yours) that the IRS has stolen your money and returned it to you - and is now expecting you to say thank you. It's as if someone on the street took $100 out of your wallet and 9 months later gave you $20 back - and then went on to expect a thank you for the 20 bucks.

I want to pay less taxes. I don't want a bigger return.

I'll need a little help. What are "Immigrant subsidies"? What does "immigrant subsidies to help pay her health insurance" mean? I'm unfamiliar with the concept. If the IRS repayment was $10,000 how much were the total initial subsidies? In other words, does $10,000 represent the total of subsidies or is it 10% of the $100,000 they received?

There are things being discussed here I don't understand.

I don't know what the subsidies was for (I am sure he said medical) or how much, I didn't ask him. he just said he went over the cutoff point and he was going to be fined the 10 grand. then 2 days later he said the IRS will drop some of the fine depending how much they went over.Jim
