Back into scale helis after 25 years need help please..
Hey guys,

25 years ago I was flying kyosho concept 30s with the kyosho scale bell 222 and Hughes 500 bodies..

I got out of helis but have been flying scale airplanes for 30 years. Well I just started on a Roban 800 size airwolf.

I have just started putting the gear into and so far I am very happy with it, but I need tons of help with the setup..

I bought some mks servos with it from motion rc, I am hoping they will be ok for it..

I have a dx 18 so was planning on the spektrum ar7200 but I just saw that it’s discontinued...

I need advice on what fbl unit to use? Will it have enough channels for gear and lights or will I need a 2nd receiver? What esc should I use? And also what would be a good motor? I have no idea what head speed to use?

Also on setup should I put zero pitch in the middle of my throttle stick? I am worried about pulling it down and driving the helicopter into the ground.. when I flew helis we didn’t have negative pitch so we had zero pitch set at the low throttle stick position..

Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated

Thanks Bill

Hi Bill. Welcome back to helicopters.

I can offer some guidance as I have a few Roban scale helis in my fleet, including an 800 UH-1.

The MKS servos should be fine for the 222.

As far as fbl controllers go, a lot of the scale guys are using the Bavarian Demon controllers -- either the 3X or the Axon. They swear by them. I have been using iKON and iKON2 controllers in my models and I think they work great. Both the BD and iKON controllers require a separate receiver. Full disclosure: I am Futaba guy, so I can't really offer advice about Spektrum, however I'm sure if you went with either controller you could use a Spektrum receiver with enough channels for the lights and retracts.

With regard to headspeed, for the 800 size 2-blade heli like the 222, you should be shooting for a headspeed between 1250 and 1300. The Roban mechanics have a gear ratio of 1:13.8. A 450 to 500Kv motor will work nicely here. I am running an Xnova 480Kv motor in my Roban 800 Huey, with a headspeed of 1300.

For pitch, I set up my scale models with 5 degrees at mid-stick, -3 degrees on the bottom, and +11 or +12 on top. That setup will give you a nice half-stick hover, enough pitch on top to get you out of trouble if you need it, and a nice, gentle descent pitch on the bottom so the heli won't drop like an anvil when you start trying to descend.

Some of the other scale guys will chime in here I'm sure with some other great advice. Hope this gives you somewhere to start though.

Hey guys, I am like Bonanzadrv and need info as well, I have built and flown plenty of scale helis in the 600 class with a flybar but recently picked up a 800 size Roban Hughes 500, mine has KST HV servos in it and had a Spirit FBL gyro with a FrSky rx, I sold the gyro and rx because I fly Futaba, has anyone tried the new Futaba 760 FBL gyro? I did pickup a Futaba 750 for it but this FBL is new to me and I don't have a clue on how to program this gyro and set it up, I have a Kontronik 160 and the instructions are hard to figure out, so between all that and never setting up a FBL gyro I have my brain in overload, also it talks about a buffer pack hooked up to the Kontronik. I put this project aside right now but want to build a 800 size Roban Huey or 700 size Cobra, so I need to get the hang of this FBL programming quickly.....

Thanks guys and sorry if I jumped in on Bonanzadrv post but I thought we both might be just starting out in this FBL world and need help...........

Yes I did search and didn't find the answers I was looking for.

Programming flybarless controllers for the first time can be a pain.
You really need to post something so a Futaba guy can help you. Just my opinion that Futaba gyro looks very hard to figure out and get it right the first time. If it keeps giving you a problems, you might like a Ikon 2BT system instead. It connects with your smart phone and it’s one of the simplest to program that I’ve found. Microbeast is very easy too.
