Vario bell 412
So i have a few projects going for next year ircha and nats, one of ehich us a vario bell 412. This is the one made to take T-rex 700 mechanics but since i dont have a t-rex 700 i am using one of my oldies but goodies Xcell 60s. I cut my own woodwork for the mechanics base mount and use a flex cable for the tail drive. The canle that comes with the fuselage is nice but the housing was really heavy duty and heavy as in it weighs a ton. I went with another canle and a teflon tube which was much ligter.
Mechanics were flown for a few months to make surs everything worked and felt well and finally it was mounted i the fuselage and maindened this wknd. Now that thats done, its time to tidy up the mechs and start the real work of scaling things down.

LOL ! Since he used the term twice , I thought it might have been something specific to scale....

Project coming along. Test flights revealing sime issues thst are being fixed one by one. I stripped the crown teeth on the xcell main gear, these are what drive the tail rotor from the mechanics so i changed things. Now the tail drive comes from the outsr teeth, same as driven by the clutch gear. A more solid place to drive the tail. I had to use a takeoff gear to kerp the main rotor to tail rotor gear ratio the same. Text flights so far reveal all is working nicely. I noticed over the ladt few flights the clutch has been slipping so ive spread the shoes apart a smidgen and its better but could use being spread a smidgen more.

Thanks Marc.
some pics of the mods i did to the Xcell mechanics
I used an aluminum takeoff gear for the tail drive, it's mounted to a 5mm shaft which leads down to a 90 degree gearbox. The gearbox is a tail rotor gearbox from a Century Hawk withthe metal gears installed. The coupler for the flex cable drive is at the output shaft end of the gearbox

The controll system was redesigned to use a 120 degree ccpm system. i used G-10 material to relocate the servos. the servos are located to provide the phasing mechanically so no electronics or "twisting" of the swashplate driver is required to get the phasing set. i also went old school on the swashplate outer ring radius arm stay just like to old GMP Cobra/Competitor used back in the day.

Whats cool about the huey/bell 412,212 is that even tho the mechanics are mounted in the cabin as opposed to a "doghouse" set of mechs, i think i can still conceal the mechs to keep em out of sight, we will see.

Hey Kieth, good to hear from you. i am not sure about the other club members, i dont think they have a place to fly currently but i fly with a buddy (he is a 64 guy too) at the junior high school on the weekends. Helis are easy to find a place for but all my fixed wing birds are grounded til the club finds a place.drive a rotary, fly a rotorcraft
