Scale?
Welcome back guys, I sold all my scale helis and got into EDF Jets, but after 4 yrs of flying jets in front of my house I might me losing my runway, so thinking about returning to scale helis and was thinking Roban, either 800 or 700 size would interest me, if you have a Roban heli, let me know what you think of it, please.

Yeah, MRC is where I get all my EDF jets from, I seen they have some Roban helis in stock but not a whole lot of reviews so I thought I would ask the more experience pilots over here. I know there is a Roban section but with things kind of old news from before, thought I would ask in this section.D. Lee.....t.Born again.t.....

Hi, Roban is a good way to get back in to scale for sure. I currently have a 700 size Bell 407 and a 700 size AS-350. There are things on each of mine where the details are either lacking or wrong, but I've been taking my time and slowly fixing those things. The mechanics are ok, but need to be looked over closely to be sure everything was put together correctly. They use a lot of loctite on the screws of the frames and don't be surprised if you strip some of the screw heads while trying to remove them. I will say the owner of Roban will stand behind his product if you have any issues.

I still have the electric Evo from your MD500 that I got from you years ago. Still haven’t opened the box, if you want it back to put in a fuselage, let me know. I obviously have never gotten around to it.Nick Crego

Wow, you still got that, refresh my memory please, did it have the electric mount and a motor or what?, the reason I'm asking is the fact that I can no longer find that Century electric conversion mount anywhere so that is what I need more than anything, never should have sold out that's for sure, I had like 9 of those conversion mounts and now I can't find even one, send me a pm Eury and if your into texting send me a pic or two, 559-230-9787

Still thinking on going Roban, haven't decided yet.

This is the text of the ad I bought it from.
Hirobo Evo .50 RTF with Electric conversion installed $200
This is a Hirobo Evo. 50 converted to electric. I have done 8 of these conversions and not one failure yet. I sold all of them but this one, just don't fly it anymore. Hyperion 630kv motor mounted to a Century electric conversion mount with a Great Planes 5mmx28 prop adapter running through the stock Hirobo clutch, Hacker 110 ESC with no BEC, it uses a 4000mah 4.8v NiMH battery for the controls, Hitec 645MG servos, Futaba 401/9254 gyro/servo, Mah 600 main blades, Align 90mm tail blades. Flies great, no issues, other than the canopy isn't in all that great shape. I'm not a 3D flyer so haven't tried any of that, loop and roll is all I have done with it. The front servo tray has been modified to hold a 5000 6S 45c Lipo and the front canopy mounts was modified as well, please see the pictures. These mechanics make great scale application as well, the video is with these mechanics installed, fuselage was sold last year, so I was flying the Evo in pod/boom over the last few months.
No RX or lipo included.
Like I said, I’ve never even opened the boxes you sent me. I’m on a trip now, let me talk to my son when I get home. I told him we were going to put it in an MD500 and then Motion RC was terrible to deal with so I kind of lost interest.

I had the pleasure (actual horror) of assembling for a friend a Roban 800 size Airwolf. The paint job was about the only good thing on the model. The mechanics were great ( Vario ) but the way the heli was designed around them, absolute crap. Not only was the kit missing several parts, many of the parts provided didn’t even match the rotten, unfocused, black and white, photocopied photos in the manual. I had to download the color manual and view it on my PC to even get a clue. There was very little written instructions regarding the critical assemblies. Getting the lighting system to work was pure trial and error. Many of the lights that were supposed to glow steady ended up having to “ flash “ as the controller was faulty. There were no detailed instructions for the lights / console setups. The upper console lights failed after about an hour of use - after the console was glued in, of course. The already assembled, with permanent loctite, main frame mechanics had to be disassembled to install the motor. This required heating ALL the screws with a soldering iron to melt the loctite. The rotor head depicted in the manual was totally different from what came with the helicopter. The garbage retracts required all kinds of shimming to remove the built in slop that caused the units to constantly bind and fail. I had to jury - rig the side gun pods as the provided hardware in no way would work to assemble the units as depicted in the manual. MANY of the molded parts were warped. When attempted to straighten them, they broke. The windshield wiper blades would not even fit the contours of the windshields. No info was provided on how to mount the two LiPo batteries, nor was there ANY info on how / where to mount the ESC and other electrical components.
Several of the factory installed “captured” blind nuts within the body fell out. Also, the design itself does not in any way lend itself to any level of accessibility or easy maintenance. God forbid if you overlook something in a previous step as the whole helicopter has to be disassembled to access the mechanics, especially the tail gearbox. In my humble opinion, the ONLY thing outstanding on this helicopter was it’s ridiculous price, especially considering how much was wrong with the kit. Personally, If I were offered one for free, I’d sell it and move on to something better.
Enough said?

Well, I certainly have had a different experience with Roban. They have their faults but so does every manufacturer of this stuff. Vario is infuriating in their own way. I feel they are a good value in this specialized hobby. Proper building methods and attention to detail are still required, but that applies to any helicopter. Give one a try and let us know your thoughts! Mike

Okay, so mixed emotions on Roban, I went to the MRC site and read all the reviews on all the helis and only a couple of people were not happy and that was the smaller birds, so I still think I will give one a try and I didn't expect them to be perfect, after all I've only built six Hughes 500 and two Agusta 109 scale helis so I expect to have to build... But this would be the first Roban with mechanics. Thanks guys.D. Lee.....t.Born again.t.....

I bought a roban superscale Astar when RCA still distributed roban helis. I got the unpaintex version because i wanted my own scheme. Ling story short, i designed and built my own mechanics, relocated where the greenhouse is and changed the look of the winndshield. I think the word "superscale" is misused, because details arentvery many or even worse, accurate in most cases. "Large scale" would be a better word. Iv'e seen several of the roban superscale machines and for the money paid, you will find many disapointments. On the plus side its a quick way to get into nice looking scale bird.
Also i have a century electric motor mount if one is still being sought.
drive a rotary, fly a rotorcraft
