GMP Hughs 300C
At the Joe Nall this Spring, I happened to stumble on to a guy that had set up some models for sale next to one of the venders, someone he knew I assume. In his items for sale was a GMP Huges 300C that he had priced at $200. I thought about it for a few minutes, then offered him $150 for the Hughs, to my surprise he accepted my offer. The heli was mostly assembled and had the original box sitting beside it and he said that the Futaba box beside it and another cardboard box went with the heli. After taking the stuff to car, I went through it and low and behold, there was a new Sullivan starter and starting wand, a new fuel bulb, a dry cell telephone battery like we used to use years ago, and all the original paper work for the heli, including the receipts from when he bought everything. The heli had an OS 28H mounted on it and four S48 servos. In the Futaba box was a new but dirty Conquest Transmitter and receiver.

When I got home, I went over the little Hughs and found the assembly was horrible, the original owner had got in over his head with trying to assemble the heli and had given up. Everything was new, including the unstarted 28H, so completely disassembled the heli and started from scratch. It has taken a few months of off and on work on it but yesterday I hovered it for the first time. I had forgotten how hard it was to hover a fixed pitch helicopter, but I'm slowly getting it trimmed. It will help when I get the engine broken in, as it not wanting to run a steady speed yet. A little more work getting the canopy and fins painted and I'm going to have a real cutie to add to my small vintage collection of helicopters. I just wish I could find a new canopy for it, the original had sloppy assembly and a worse paint job, but in time I'll get it worked out.

Look for MP Helis on Facebook. I don’t think he has a website any longer. You have to find him on Facebook. Anyhow, he sells the canopies and all interior plastic parts for the Hughes 300, fan shrouds too !

Thanks Steve. I found out when I bought the Hughs that MP didn't have a web page, as that was the second place I thought of for a canopy, after Randell. When I tried the MP site, it only had a link that took me to Google. Unfortunately, I don't have a Facebook account, never being interested in social media. I understand that people have their own reason for doing what they do, but when trying to run even a small business they have to understand some of us are never going to be on social media sites.Allen Dye

BTW, one of the really nice things about the Huges 300 was that everything but the tail skid and the teetering wire were with the heli, including the fan shround, the seat and instrument panel and the fake fuel tanks. It was a pain fitting all the radio gear, including a Kraft KG-1 gyro, under that seat, but I got it done, finally. I had to lower a section of the cabin floor under the seat for the gyro to fit, and the battery had to go under the floor. I originally intended to use the Conquest radio, to keep it closer to period correct, but the receiver was just to big to fit under the seat, so I went with a much smaller 2.4 gig receiver, which just barely fit. Since I was dropping the Futaba receiver with it's old style Futaba plugs, that meant I also couldn't use the S48 servos, so I replaced them with new much faster modern servos. So now I have a brand new Conquest, with new receiver and S48 servos and a new Life battery in the transmitter just sitting here. No idea what to do with that.Allen Dye
