Based on the number of open flight stations I saw today something needs to change. I know it’s only Friday but I would guess less than half were used. The $125 landing fee was beyond ridiculous.

Could you elaborate? What does that mean; It was poorly attended, it was poorly managed, or something else? I've never been, so I'm not sure how to take your report. Thanks for the report, by the way. Been looking for IRCHA news and reports.
GScott The $125 landing fee
Wow!!! Was that for non-IRCHA members, or the standard fee for members?

The $125 was for everyone. It included an IRCHA membership for non-members. It was $150 for those who chose not to sign up for IRCHA. I don’t know where the issue lies. My last IRCHA was maybe 5-6 years ago but I recall everyone flight station being 2-3 pilots deep.

$125 is a pretty good chunk of change for a weekend. By comparison the Birmingham fly-inn I attend every year landing fees are $20 bucks. I'm guessing it's not why attendance is down but it can't help. What does 125 buy you? It might be the right price if it buys free hot-dogs in the day and beer at night. If it only gets you the glory of standing in an AMA field, one that I thought my dues were already paying for, $125 seems like a swift kick in the testies.

It was always a big deal to some people every year to seek out and announce the pilot registrations. Does anyone know what the turnout was for this year?

I will get blasted for this! but, why does everyone care about what it cost to go and where is the money, I pay and go every year and I could careless what they do with it, I chose to go no one forced me, if they choose to go to dinner with my money so be it! as long as they fulfill obligation for the Jamboree why does it really matter, you don't beat any other fun fly up what they do with there entry fees! it is all about if we chose to go for the cost, and it is about getting together and having fun!, so why do you care so much, its all I heard all weekend at IRCHA from some people.
Rant over.
no need to reply I don't care what they do with it as long as they still have it!

I thought $125 was wayyy too much. But when I look at it, you get more than just a weekend of flying and I waste well more than $125 a year on even more pointless things than flying helis. So next year, I'll be signing up and flying instead of just watching.
I may not do it every year though.

I paid $125 on Wed. evening through the website. $25 for IRCHA membership.
So $100 for "Landing Fee".. I also got a T-shirt, that would be like 20 to 25 dollars at any event. Yeah it's went up but what hasn't?
I agree just keep having the event..

Another good IRCHA is in the books. Arrived on Monday afternoon and left following Monday morning. Attendance was over 500, similar to last year. Those numbers are about the same as the 2007-2008 years heading into boom times when Raptors were peaking and Align was arriving and then the explosion of flybarless, electric, Mikado and SAB in 2011 leading to the heady days of 1000+ pilot IRCHA events.
The internal IRCHA politics and year long disagreements with AMA did little to hamper an enjoyable week at IRCHA. It is my opinion IRCHA will be better soon. The weather was perfect, sunny warm days and cool nights for campfires and good sleeping weather. The golf cart rates were fair and down from 2-3 years ago. Plenty of food vendors.
The mowing was not as good at in the past, but we are not there for grass we are there to use the wide open airspace. Plenty of available flight stations. The AMA grounds crew did a good job of keeping up with the trash collection and port-a-johns cleaning.
IRCHA did a great job of speeding up the prize giveaways and a big thanks to the vendors for their generosity.
This was a comfortable IRCHA with the pilot number reflecting that those attending are the true helicopter pilots and not the massive mobs of heli-checkbook wannabees during the peak years.
I for one plan on returning and maintaining a positive attitude. It was also great to see Mark Ryder back out under his towel and tripod filming the actions for us to view in a few weeks.

dialarotor.... Very nice post. Thank for taking the time to pass along your experience. I don't travel much and don't attend the IRCHA event. Still, I've been building and flying model helicopters for 30+ years and like to know how we are getting on.

Very nice report.

You can't imagine the background expenses that go into this event. Portapotties alone are one of the single highest line item expenses, thousands and thousands of dollars. All those tents......they are rented and are not cheap. Think AMA lets the site be used for free? Nope, not hardly.
The landing fee spiked this year simply because expenses did as well. Attendance was as good or better than last year. You're not going to see the numbers from years back any time soon because the overall hobby is down. And by the way, that 520 head count is legit. Numbers in the 1000 range likely included counting anything with a pulse.
Tim, Wes, and the rest of IRCHA board did an excellent job this year. I've been coming to this thing for over two decades. What I saw this year was reminescent of the early years when it was more about the pilots than seeing how many vendors could be held for defacto ransom and ultimately run away (or simply pissed off) and how many pilot stations either side of stage center could be commandeered for endless demos. Guys were having fun. People weren't bitching. It's was how it's supposed to be.

Hi All,

A camera lens was turned in to AMA that was found at Site 4. If it's yours, please call and talk to Tammy at the front desk and be able to identify it and what type of camera it belongs to. Thanks! (800) 435-9262, ext. 210 or 0 for the operator.

**Update: the lens was claimed.

$100 registration fee is pretty crazy. Aside from the cost to register as a pilot, most of the expenses of IRCHA are made up of sponsorship cost to attend and have a booth at the event. I believe a platinum sponsorship is around $5000 and they have to donate a large amount for attendance prizes and give away's. So its not just the pilot registration fee that goes toward the expenses. When you stop and look at the income its hard not to think about where all that money is going. Just for 500 pilots at $100 a head that's 50k. And if you opt for for the IRCHA membership which in my mind give you nothing that's another $25.

What is the cost of attendance over the next few years and where will it go? Ya we all blow money on dumb stuff. Ya they give you a shirt which cost about $5 in the quantity they have printed and a free dinner but in my mind $100 is pretty steep but I'll prob keep going.
