Now that RR has been online for a bit, I see we now have upvotes and downvotes for posts. I think this is great, honestly. It really settles the debate on quality posts according to the community. Post count, and RR status debates are now a thing of the past.

How will you use it? I think we all know a good post when we see it. Those deserve an Upvote, obviously. The harder part is the downvotes.

Snarky posts get downvoted? Off-topic posts that derail threads get downvoted? Personal attacks, while against policy and are sometimes hard to define, should get downvoted I think. The list goes on.

My question regarding this new function of RR, is how do you intend on using it? Will you use it at all? Have you recognized that it's even there? Do you care?

I plan as using it as you described with proper discretion and judgement.....Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

Don't know yet... As a generality, I don't like conversation condensed to "Like" or "Don't Like". It seems communication is increasingly compressed into smaller and smaller soundbites - and the ultimate expression of that is "Bill Liked a Post". It started when email was replaced with text messages. Then text messages were replaced with even shorter Tweets. Now we are down to simply clicking "Like".

I suppose there is no cost to adding it to this forum. Why not include it? Still, I don't see how it's going to add to what is primarily a discussion forum.

I might add, I reserve the right to change my mind. Maybe time will prove this to be a valuable addition.

I like the addition. I actually suggested it to mark quite some time ago. I generally use the function to say “I agree” to a member that posted without having to write it out. To dislike I have to feel pretty strongly about something to bother. But I think it helps put a barometer on things sometimes. It sure doesn’t hurt. If a member doesn’t care for the feature, it’s just as easy to ignore it.Signature

Fair enough. I certainly can overlook the feature if it doesn't prove purposeful. I'd only like to ask that others comment, instead of simply "Like", when a comment is warranted. I can see the feature damping conversation by offering a single mouse click to "join" the conversation. If you can add to what is being discussed, don't take the easy path and simply "Like". Instead, contribute.

I see what you're saying, and I agree with you.

On the other hand, I think it's a useful feature. Time will tell, of course.

It seems some of the larger and more widespread social media platforms are moving away from "Likes". I don't Facebook or Instagram so the below article won't affect my interaction with the world. Still, it suggests that there is pressure to eliminate the like button.

Neither do I, but from what I gather most of the sites that allow 'likes' show you who is doing the 'liking'.

That's not the case here. You can't see who is doing the up/down voting. Which is good, I think. Again, time will tell how it all shakes out and how the community accepts it.
