Throwing in the towel-Changes concerning repro canopies
After a lot of reflection and soul searching I will no longer be offering vintage canopies for sale to the public. The plain truth is that it's too difficult for me to do this physically, the materials cost too much, shipping is outrageous, there is zero monetary gain in it, and the bottom line is I'm tired. Tired of dealing with the public who seem to think that these grow on trees and that I control the Postal Service pricing. The plain truth is that these are very unique products that don't grow on trees and they are available in Germany anyway and we all know how their shipping costs are. I have made a deal with an overseas buyer who is going to buy all of the equipment, supplies, and molds that I have made and taking the lot to his country where he can get a fair price for the products. He has asked me not to give out his name until everything is finalized. He is not scheduled to send a container for packing until late August so if there are any canopies that you are sitting on the fence about now is the time to take care of it. He has already informed me that he has no interest in shipping his canopies to the US at any price. Rant over.

Hey Randall

I am very grateful that you are even more fanatically fastidious and quality oriented than the original manufacturers
Everyone here benefits from your experience and dedication in keeping vintage alive...

Thanks Michael,

Before I forget, your .060 Shark canopy is ready and will be boxed soon and coming your way.

In short, I can't take it anymore. Between the health issues and dealing with spiraling cost for plastic, shipping, packaging material, you name it, it has gone out of sight cost wise and then when you add in the ceaseless nitpicking and complaining it has been the last straw . The man I sold the equipment to is a vintage enthusiast and they regularly pay 3 times what we do for canopies just to be able to get them. I know that he will do well and he feels feels no compulsion to even sell them in the US. His opinion is that we are so spoiled here that he doesn't care if new canopies are available or not. I've come to agree with him. When you include the molds that I was working on to get completed he will have the molds for canopies that are available no where else in the world. I didn't start making these to get fabulously wealthy and would have been happy to break even but, after some serious cost analysis have come to realize for every canopy that I have sent out since 2008 it's cost me money out of pocket. THAT is a poor economic system at its finest. If I wanted to throw money away on a regular basis I would get married again.

Thank you to those that have supported and been kind to me throughout the years. You all know who you are and I've been paying attention. It has been greatly appreciated. I can always take comfort knowing that at least I'll have new canopies on my vintage machines. Another rant over.

I feel your pain. I have an affiliation with a small hobby product. It sells for about 12 bucks. A few weeks ago we had an individual write twice, call three times (we don't have a business phone) and file a dispute with PayPal - and here's the entertaining part. All of this was within 7 days of placing an order.

This is FAR from rare. There has been a lot of changes in the world and in modeling over the last 15 years. One of the most pronounced is how people treat each other. It's not just the decline in model helicopters, the introduction of drones, or the appearance of ARF airplanes. It's the people themselves.

With the above said, the largest percentage of modelers that buy our product are really great people. Yes there is a measurable number of people that are not nice (and the number is growing) but, far and away most people are really cool.

Anyway... I'm always sad to see a company and asset to the hobby go - but I understand.

I completely understand. The first lesson in owning your own business is you only have to work 1/2 days....and you get to choose which 12 hours. Best of luck!!Treat me good, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse.

I'm retired now from 3 different companies that I owned and operated for over 30 years. Yes, I got tired of working 14-16 hour days but I didn't have some douchebag standing over me because I was the douchebag that called the shots. The heli gig was just to blow off steam and have some cool stuff for my own helis but it's more work now than it's worth to deal with. I guess the masses can now turn to Germany where it costs 20 euros to send a letter to the US. The last time I ordered a canopy which was many years ago before I started making them it was around 50 euros and I'm sure that it's higher than that now. Yet another rant over.

From my previous conversations with him I don't think he will even consider shipping to the US at any cost. I can find out more information when his crew comes to crate and pack the equipment and molds at the end of August or first of September. I suspect that he will reserve the right to release any information when the equipment has been moved and setup and I have agreed not to release his name or any other information unless he says it is OK. At this time he doesn't even have a timeline for that. He doesn't need the money and might choose to just sit on the equipment. He's not very friendly towards Americans with the exception of myself and a few other people. The repro vintage canopy playground is closing in the US from the looks of it. I tried to warn vintage heli enthusiasts on several occasions that it was coming to a close but nobody heard me.

I'm not sure what to think of this. Possibly I'm reading it wrong but he comes across in a very poor light.

I can assure you that he's not concerned with PC or negative light or anyone else's opinion of him. He doesn't care much for Europeans either. I'm quite proud to call him a friend. He's an ex pat of the US and turned an idea that he and I discussed 30 plus years ago in the late 70's when we were riding Harleys way before they were cool into a multi million dollar a year business importing used Harleys from the US into foreign countries such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand and many other countries. It has now turned into cars, boats, airplanes, or whatever else the rich want. Buy cheap here or elsewhere and sell for outrageous prices to the uber rich overseas and he became uber rich doing it. My father has already passed but I still have my Mom in the States that I need to be here for her and when she is gone my fiance and I are considering joining him over seas as well. He doesn't need a few dollars a years from the sale of vintage a few canopies. I seriously doubt that he even sets the machines up unless one of his people want to give it a try and run it. He did this for me as he was seeing the way I was being treated by my fellow hobbyists. He explained to me when I asked him about it that he simply woke up and found a better way. I just felt that everyone that has been supportive of me through the years should be aware. I'm thankful for all of those that actually followed through with their commitments to me and the others that made a commitment and didn't follow through shame on you.
