What are best servos for 800 sized helicopter?
I have a LARGE Airstar Mongoose.

One of the Futaba cyclic servos died on me.

I was lucky to get it down safely.

Which is the better servo to get for a large heli like this?

Futaba 9151 or 9551?

Are 9151’s usually the better cyclic/collective servos?

I was a fan of JR but now Xpert make really nice servos .I had Airstar and would feel safe using Xperts . Look at specs and see if you have options with Xpert brand .I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

I love promodeler servos. He's been in the heli world for a long time. They work as well if not better then my mks servos

you really dont need more than 150 oz-in on a garden variety 700... so if your flying the big 800 airstar likely your not pulling alot of fast intense collective/cyclic moves and are not using FBL... so as long as the servo is rated for over 150oz (at 4.8v) you should be perfectly fine.

but I would advise sticking with metal gear servos. I fly a 700 gasser (highly modded G20 stretched) and noticed that plastic gear servos develop alot of slop over time which leads to servo buzzing (hunting).. but then again the airstar is well known for very low vibration as are other heavy RC format engine birds especially those with a primary belt drive.
showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

I agree that Xpert R2s will fit your bill nicely. Plenty fast, and have a lot of torque. Been using them on 3 helis over the last year and a half, and no issues with them at all.Logo 700, Specter 700, Goblin 700, Trex 700DFC, Gaui X7, Logo 690SX, Logo 600SX; Trex 470 Trex 500

I expect to receive a lot of flak on this one but my two Vario gassers fly with Align DS610 and their Savox originals...
Never had any issues with those and I am using a FBL for both...

I currently have Futaba 9551’s on two of my Airstar Mongoose’s.

The oldest one, has 9252’s, which one failed at IRCHA in a 3 foot hover. But I got it down safe.

I ordered 9551’s from Amain, but may upgrade to the BLS272, because I have heard those are really good.

What are your thoughts on the brushless BLS272’s?

OneHoof What are your thoughts on the brushless BLS272’s?

I have the 272s in two of my gassers
my old Trex/Helibug conversion has had literally about 40 gallons of gas thru it without a hiccup I have 3 of them on the head

My Synergy/JC Designs gasser has about 5 gallons thru it this fall
with 272s on everything and there still tight and working good also
ageing is manditory maturity is optional

Ive been using the same BLS451s in one of my gassers for 4 years at 5v... the only time they needed service was after a crash when the upper gear case was cracked. they've held up well. Kinda hard to go wrong with metal gear BLS futabas. I fly a mix of sport and big air 3D with a CGY750... they work plenty good despite being slightly less powerful and slower than the BLS272s so going with 272s you should be well off on a smooth 800, FBL or flybarredshowing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...
