Sorry to hear that Mark, I know this place has been rocky at times but I have not seen a forum with such a dedicated administrator as RR. But in life, there are many paths that one can take, good luck on your next path.

Mark, I am sorry to hear of this turn of events, but I fully understand the reasoning behind it. I have thought for a long time you should market your forum, but I think forums are a thing of the past with social media. Still there should be some value here. In fact my company would benefit from the application, I wish they would see it the same way. This would be a great way for our NA work force to communicate with the problems we are faced with.

I want to wish you the very best in your retirement, or any future endeavors you may wish to move into. I have enjoyed this hobby over the years and I am sure you feel the same.

Good luck and many happy landings!!!

A crazy thought. Can we, the RR members band together and purchase RR? Maybe retain Mark as Admin?Gerry Cullan,

I've been considering how to make this work. If I were to buy RR it would be to run it as a zero profit business. If I made enough to keep the "doors open" but not have to feed it (money), I would consider the endeavor.

The problem is that I don't believe I have nearly the skills needed to keep a site like this current. Mark, you have this site in nearly pristine condition at this moment but I wouldn't know how to maintain it over, say, 10 years. Almost certainly anyone wishing to keep this site going would have to make changes. The business model would have to be modified and that would require, I assume, coding skills - that I don't have.

Further, if I remember correctly, a few years ago you were considering the purchase of equipment to combat DDOS threats. If memory serves me, that hardware was in the $100,000+ range. A non-profit business model to allow modelers access to RR and its considerable data base would have to take into account not just the recurring bandwidth and hosting fees, but also the time value of any initial purchase costs.

Finally - I don't know how many hours a week are needed to keep a site like this pointed in the right direction. I have a full time job and don't know if I could keep a site like this properly monitored time wise.

It seems like this sale will require someone with some time, some amount of funding, a knowledge of both modeling and the modeling business, and some coding skills. With this list of requirements I wonder if RR might not be a candidate for absorption by an existing forum or an e-retailer that could defray/piggyback/consolidate some of the operating costs and time requirements onto an existing online endeavor while at the same time supporting that existing business.

I just don't know if I have the skills to even consider this.

I have a question and or request. As RR members, can we request all our posts and galleries be deleted? I dont want some "other" company to get it. The deal I had was with the original owner, and I sure as hell dont want a potentially new OWNER to exploit the use of my content nor my email to bombard me with spam.

if you are not 100% confident... dont do it. Ive had many friends that fell on hard times during the dot com crash cause they were wishy washy on such ideas. I believed in one such friend and paid a heavy price (lost my home, job and filed for bankruptcy) for believing he could pull one such endeavor together. As a result Ive learned that one should never risk anything they are not willing to lose permanently.

I understand your request and would like to ask the same. I was under the impression that one of the benefits of posting here vs, say, Facebook was that the information wasn't going to be sold for marketing or data mining purposes. I'm fully aware that anything I put out on the internet is there forever but I hadn't considered the possibility that what I post here might be sold en masse to some third party.

I might go one step further. Is it possible to download all of my posts in a single file? I currently have about 1,800 posts. Some of those I have spent considerable time constructing. Admittedly none of them are Shakespeare but I don't want them lost forever either.

I am working for free here. That's why I have to move on.

This is the problem...

RR colocates its own hardware in Chicago. This is the lowest cost way to conduct business. rrTV makes cloud hosting cost prohibitive. I cannot afford to be RR's on-call admin in the new year. Thus RR is for sale.

Mark, I wish you all the best in whatever direction life takes you. Runryder and its community of r/c helicopter fans has been a part of my life for many years now. I really think that you've pulled together about the best group of people ever. Sincerely, thank you!Gerry Cullan,

I don't want to be negative here, because I like this place and Mark for what he has done over these many years. Keep in mind I am not an IT person but looking at from the outside it seems like Mark has created a monster. He as administered and tweaked on this site all of these 18 years. My question, could a "standard" IT person come in and run this machine without input from Mark? I am positive a "standard" Non-IT person could not. Code may be Code but I have seen in the past that in code there are nuances that only the writer understands. Some times this is on purpose and sometimes not. But I would never consider (Which I am not) purchasing any commodity like this with out a written (enforceable) contract for future servicing included, which Mark is wanting to avoid, apparently.

I am working for free here. That's why I have to move on.
I am an airline pilot by trade and fly mostly to Europe. Many people will say when they hear that I'm flying to ____ (Germany, Spain, Belgium, etc...), "that sounds nice. Will you take me too?". My general response is "Yes, I'm lucky to have a good job - but if they stopped paying me, I wouldn't go to work". They look at me gob-smacked. They often seem stupefied by my suggestion that I fly for monetary compensation.

I can only assume that after nearly 20 years of monitoring a helicopter forum, some of the appeal lies in monetary compensation.

Mark, you will be sorely missed. I have learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed this forum. It will be a sad day to see it disappear or its theme content altered. I realize things change overtime but this forum is very special and consistently has some remarkable members/enthusiasts. That kind of mature talent gathered here is hard to find in one place. Blessings in your retirement or whatever you decide to do.

Another week has passed. We are 7 days into November - and the clock is ticking.

Any updates? Any nibbles? Any takers? Any clues as to what to expect Jan 01, 2019? Will our posts magically appear on HF/RCG? Are we drifting towards a 404 message? Is there a chance nothing will happen new years eve?

I understand it may be difficult to provide details. Any general progress report?
