A new Project...

My sponsor (customer) has been REALLY patient while I get these together.

I decided to go away from the construction method I have used so far and make these 'Flatpackable' to save on shipping costs if necessary. (The Skid Tubes a re still a bit long!!! I need to cut them...)

The cross tubes and the Skid tubes will be bolted together from underneath. There will be rebated inserts which run up inside the skid tubes to reinforce the couplings and stop the bolts from deforming these tubes.

The joints will be braised, a sample of which I have shown below.

The holes on the underside of the Skid Tube are covered with 3D printed Skid Shoes running the full length of their underside.

After a bit of reworking, I have a set of skids which can be flatpacked. The cross/skid tube joints are reinforced with bushes inside the skid tubes and held together with M5 cap bolts.

I still need to weld on plates to cap the front ends of the skid tubes.

The side steps are the next job... Hopefully they will look something like these (less the bearpaws for now) when the painter is finished with them...

I have the 3D bits done too. The button on the Skid Backs and the Skid Shoes which will run the full length of the this set.

Just a drop of paint needed!!
A few clicks away from a finished Skid set. Just a light rub to remove the oxide then an Etch Primer coat.

I tried to fabricate the Step mount out of aluminium, but at the scale I am working, to produce a scale like mount with the strength I think it will need left a scruffy finish, so 3D printing came to the rescue again. If these mounts hold up, I will use more 3D printing in future Skid Sets.

These Skids are still repairable in the event of a serious landing. The joints between the Cross Tubes and the Skid tubes are held with a M5 Cap bolts so can be taken apart.
