I had heard about that. Thanks for posting the link. I'm really 50/50 on this in terms of credibility. I can totally see the government doing this. I just wish there was a way to really verify it.

Do you listen to Mark Levin? He is the only talk show person I listen to on the way to work and home (pre-recorded). If you know anything about this man, then you know he doesn't spout lies or half truths. I heard about it first from him, then I did a quick google search of it. Form your own opinion. Does it really surprise anyone?

Okay, I have read the articles. I say articles (plural) because one article can quote or reference other articles. And you have to follow the bunny trail.

In all honesty, some of these things make sense. These articles also have subtle ways of presenting the information that can give you the wrong impression. For example, the rules here apply to both democrats and republicans. So, this isn't a left vs. right thing. The fact that there is a particular case about a democrat doesn't say much about Republicans being exempt from this process. Here's where presentation is key:

let's look at this quote:
  • There is a secret congressional sexual harassment payoff fund.
This is highly misleading while holding some truth. This fund wasn't exclusively created to payoff sexual harassment settlements.

This fund is used to handle ANY and all legal manners including cases related to Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Now, there is NO indication as to the nature of each settlement nor the frequency in each category. Here's how you can effectively mislead people while still hold some truth.
In theory, all it takes is just 1 case of sexual harassment settlement to make the tie to such fund and also tie the cumulative cost over the years.

BINGO! You now have the right ingredients: $27 Million, Sexual Harassment settlement, and secrecy (the fact that the details are not revealed)
Result: secret congressional sexual harassment payoff fund.

Here's how I can make the same case for Women in the Workforce

Imagine that I find a staffer that settled on a legal case after being laid off after coming back from maternity leave. Her case was settled in 2010.

here's what I can claim now:
  • There is a secret congressional - women inequality - payoff fund.
  • There’s a little-known fund that goes to victims of women discrimination on the Hill. You pay for it.
Those two statements above are true. Yet, you can see how the presentation is very misleading.

Another Example. Let's say this is known:
You are successful and have $100K in your bank account. You got a parking ticket for overstaying in a 2hr limit spot. You paid the ticket with funds from your bank account. That's all we know.

As an outsider and not knowing any other information like your spending habits, here's what I can claim.

You have a secret law-breaking payoff fund.

That's highly misleading, yet, all of these statements are valid and support my claim:
Do you have $100K in your bank account? Yes
Did you break the law? Yes
Did you use the funds from the bank account to pay for the ticket? Yes
Can I see all transactions from your bank account? No.
