"I'll never forget the time".. I was at the Vegas FF..Jason K brought the new Synergy model..I told him the canopy looked like the shape of a bluefin tuna..which I thought was a compliment cause all our best ideas are copied from nature..he got peeved and said "thats not very nice".

I do a great decending funnel!

From many years ago... I have a very clear memory of going out one day to put in a flight or two on my, then new, Raptor 50. It was a nice day and my wife wanted to get some sun so she tagged along. It was a rare trip to the field for her.

She set up a lawn chair and towel and got out her magazine. I fueled up the R-50 and proceeded to un-impress her with my flying skills. We were the only ones there.

At some point during the flight the JR 8411 roll servo failed and I crashed about 20 feet in front of us. The fighting fiddy hit with the usual clatter and sat there idling. I killed the OS 50 and it sat there in near silence with only the sound of a servo motor buzzing. There was just silence except the mournful, pathetic buzzing of a dead servo.

I don't know what I expected to happen next but, without looking up from her magazine, and without the slightest interest in what had just happened, my wife said, to no one in particular, "What'd that cost us?" I couldn't help but laugh. Memory made.

"Well, nothing bad can happen now."

Nice thread and thanks for sharing the memory with Jason. I remember the stir around the Synergy when it first came out. Not only did it look unique but the fact that Jason and Todd had left the then top of the mountain, X-Cell, to start a competing brand was too much to imagine.

The first auto I did (forced to do), wasn't paying attention to fuel (nitro) ran out with my X-cell 60 custom. I froze, the head slowed down so much that you could count the blades. A friend ran out of the pits over to me and yelled " bury the throttle and put the nose down " the head whipped up and I was waiting for more instructions as what to do. Then my friend says " wow that thing is coming in fast" I panicked, added throttle and pulled back on elevator only to have the heli go screaming by us doing a tail stand. After it went by I leveled it and it slid to a stop on a dirt road no damage! Will never forget it. LOL - Kris

This is a bit long. But, I have to set up the Story.

I'd been in the RC airplane hobby for a while and transitioned to Helicopters in the early 2002. I'd had a friend buy a used X-Cell 60 custom which he gave to me to get set-up for him. I enjoy the mechanical side as much as flying.

Got the helicopter set up went to the field and met the owner for the maiden flight. Started it up and it lifted to a three foot almost hands off hover. A little gyro work and it was perfect. Got to Love the Old X-Cells.

Three flights and everything went perfect. Battery voltage was getting low and the owner wanted to make another flight so I gave him my back up battery and he put in and fired up.

About five minutes in he put in into a fast pirouette and we saw something separate from the helicopter. The helicopter was about twelve feet up doing a slow pirouette. Probably about 4 to 6 rotations a minute in a level hover.

We had no control, It was the battery pack that separated from the helicopter. The helicopter was drifting down wind straight down the runway.
I walking down the runway trying to see how much fuel is left and it was around a half tank plus a 2 oz headed. It's drifting towards the fence and the hwy.

Just before the fence was a pretty good hill. The owner and I moved to the hill in front of the helicopter and waited. The helicopter was still drifting toward us, as it passed over I reached up and grabbed the landing gear, one gear in each hand. I yelled at the own "close the fuel clip" which he did on the very first try. The engine died and stood there motionlessly till the rotor stopped.

I set the helicopter on the ground with no damage. We stood there, while everyone back at the flight line was yelling and cheering. At that instant a Semi Truck blew by on the hwy. We looked at each other and both said at the same time. It would have been in the center of his windshield if we wouldn't have caught it.

Went back to the Pitt's and discussed how many different ways this could have gone wrong.

Thinking back with what we have now, I want to see Fly Bar Less Helicopter do that.
