Some words and thoughts to ponder
These two short sentences tell you a lot about our government and our culture.

1. We are advised not to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, BUT we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works.

2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money. What's interesting is that the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't.

Profound isn't it? Think about it.

I don't think those sentences are the voice from an entire culture. Here's my take:
gmcullan 1. We are advised not to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, BUT we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works.
I really don't think the general population is encouraged to judge all gun owners. That's a strawman argument.

Here are the facts:
* A few muslim lunatics act, we want to do something.
* A few gun-owning lunatics act, we want to do nothing.

Here are the things to avoid:
* A few muslim lunatics act, we get rid of all muslims
* A few gun-owning lunatcis act, we get rid of all guns.

Here's what we should all be proposing:
* A few muslim lunatics act, we want to do something
* A few gun-owning lunatcis act, we want to do something

We can later debate on what that SOMETHING is.
But do you see the consistency?
gmcullan 2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money. What's interesting is that the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't.
First, there are some people that call Social Security "walfare". But for the purposes of this conversation, let's not include it.

Walfare (housing, food, education etc) is peanuts compared to Social Security and practially, you CAN run out of walfare when the demand of people needing help increases and we cut funding for walfare programs. Remember, this is discretionary spending, so benefits vary depending on the approved budgets. Social Security on the other hand is mandatory spending at a whopping ~$1.25 Trillion.
So, the premise is not technically correct, but the second part is true that the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't.

But without the premise, the 'MEME' to ponder about sort of falls apart.

I think part of the problem is that we don't know when a non-lunatic drops the 'non' and becomes a full blown lunatic.

Parasite, I stand by my comments. They are true and non-debatable. I'm willing to bet that the greater majority of the BB members will agree with that position.

You seem to enjoy twisting words and facts. Please go "twist" somewhere else.

Didn't you post to take those profound sentences and think about them? Well, I did. I really did. Those comments are clearly debatable because you made assertions about an entire culture and government that are not entirely true. Also, I showed you some facts about welfare and SS# that can be backed up by official data.
One thing that became clear in your sentences is the notion of "running out of something" for a certain demand. Say 'welfare'. If the government allocates $1 to welfare, we haven't technically ran out of welfare. The same applies to SS. As long as we have $1, we still haven't ran out of SS. But is that what people mean by running out? OR is it when demand is greater than supply?

I really don't understand what is it that I'm twisting.
Unlike your comments, ALL my comments are up to debate, and they may contain inadvertently errors. So, please FACT check me. Point out if I'm not understanding an issue or a point.

It seems to me that you wanted these comments for a quick high and get a bunch of virtual high-five's from the group and you really didn't want people to ponder on those 'profound' sentences after all.

It would have been nice to have read your rebuttal. But you have a choice on what you do with your time. All of us do. My attempt is not to troll, but to discuss politics which is what this section of the forum is for.
If I'm breaking any rules, by all means please let me know and point those out. I don't think one of the forum rules is that we have to agree with the masses.

It's a bit disappointing that people are not used to having their views challenged. I know it's uncomfortable, but I also like to find out where we have common ground and respect when we have disagreements.

My last comments on this subject.

In regard to Muslims, if I were to go out and protest against them or wish/cause them ill will and/or harm, I would be a racist and subject to criminal prosecution for "hate crimes"

In regard to firearms and firearms owners, I could rally against them and "Hogg" the attention with all the violence I wanted and somehow that is currently socially inacceptable. Definitely two different standards.

In regard to Social Security, that is a benefit that I started contributing to when I got my first work permit at age 14. And even though I'm retired, I still work and contribute to the SSA. And maybe you are not old enough to know or care, but up to 85% of your paid SS Benefit is taxable as regular income. Unfortunately, I fall into that bracket and it frosts me to no end to have to pay taxes on money I've already paid taxes on. Regardless, I EARNED my benefits.

Welfare is a whole other subject. It is a noble concept if used as a temporary bridge. But too many recipients have made it a multi-generational achievement. Welfare isn't earned. It is a handout, plain and simple. And it is my hard earned money paid to taxes that is going to support some lazy ass that scams the system.

So once again, Social Security benefits and Welfare are two very different things.

So troll away, Mr. Parasite, for soon you will fall victim to my Ignore button. By the way, I believe that with too many Ignores against you that you might end up banned from this board too.

Perhaps I should phrase my answer in the form of what I think in general terms rather than answering to you directly. That way it doesn't seem like I'm targeting you per se.
gmcullan In regard to Muslims, if I were to go out and protest against them or wish/cause them ill will and/or harm, I would be a racist and subject to criminal prosecution for "hate crimes"

I support the first amendment in its current form which includes the right to protest. I also support its exceptions which include things like defamation,CP, inciting violence acts, blackmail, etc.

Any type of protest that recurs to violence does NOT get my support regardless of the cause of the protest.
gmcullan In regard to Social Security, that is a benefit that I started contributing to when I got my first work permit at age 14. And even though I'm retired, I still work and contribute to the SSA. And maybe you are not old enough to know or care, but up to 85% of your paid SS Benefit is taxable as regular income. I didn't contradict that point. I agreed that Social Security is earned. The reason why I said it could be considered in the category of walfare is because that's a general term {consider this article to see where I'm coming from specially the section that is titled 'Social Security as Social Welfare'}
gmcullan Welfare is a whole other subject. It is a noble concept if used as a temporary bridge. But too many recipients have made it a multi-generational achievement. Welfare isn't earned. It is a handout, plain and simple. And it is my hard earned money paid to taxes that is going to support some lazy ass that scams the system.
I agree with you 100% there. I don't support people that factor in government assistance in planning for their future. I despise people that scam the system. If anything, I support scrutiny. Do I feel that we need to get rid of those programs? No. I would be a hypocrite if I said yes because I used government assistance grants for college. Without that help, I wouldn't have received my engineering degree. I wouldn't have been considered for the well paid jobs I was exposed to. Now, I get taxed like nobody's business. My goal is to make sure my tax dollars are well spent.

Were my grants an easy ride? No. Grants covered 60%. I had to work for the other 20% through a work-study program and the other 20% came out of my parents pocket.
In my opinion, we all had skin in the game. But I cannot deny the big help the government provided to get my degree.
To all those faceless citizens that got taxed to support school grants: I will forever be thankful.
gmcullan So troll away, Mr. Parasite, for soon you will fall victim to my Ignore button. By the way, I believe that with too many Ignores against you that you might end up banned from this board too.
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I will not change my opinions out of fear of being black-listed. I will change my opinion if you bring good points to the table that are based on facts and benefit this country and humanity in general.
