Build a better mousetrap...

Will they come? They did 17 years ago June 2001. Fast forward to today. I have spent the last several years (7 days a week) rewriting the entire RR software stack. It's not making a difference. It seems discussion forums are becoming relics of the past. Vendors at IRCHA spend heavy there but will not spend marketing dollars here. They tell me Facebook is their preferred marketing outlet. The other issue is RC is dying. It's not attracting youth as it did in the past. Today's youth seem to have shorter attention spans. Are more interest in computer gaming. Much of their time is being consumed with their mobile devices. Where is the new crop of doting dads with their kids at IRCHA? By the way, IRCHA 2019 is going to be interesting for anyone that's left. For me, there where some remarkable observations at this years IRCHA

For now I am stopping all RR software development. RR Places and My Sites will have to wait. For the past two years my line of credit has supported my and RR's unmet operating expenses. RR's remaining two advertisers are not enough to support even the basic costs of operation let alone a paycheck for me. At its peak in 2008, RR had 104 advertisers which supported a ton of event coverage. No more.

I will be 65 in November. Time for a new career.

On the bright side, I won't be killed by a stray rotor blade to the head while working under the green towel. There have been some close calls.

One of my favorite vedios...

RR Steadicam in action...

Some RR highlights...
  • Category system to allow Rep/Vendor postings.
  • Classifieds with sold (hidden) category.
  • Classifieds with separate view new.
  • Answer PMs offsite via email reply.
  • Member gallery photos with advanced scripting.
  • Gallery photo viewer integrated into postings.
  • Highly refined search with advanced back end.
  • Hosts its own high end fast response servers.
  • Hosts thousands of HD event coverage videos.
  • Rewrote entire code base with latest technology.
  • No off-topic (annoying) click bait advertising.
The list goes on and on.

It was fun while it lasted...
Thank you Mark for all your hard work! It was great to finally meet the man behind RunRyder at IRCHA this year (my first IRCHA Jamboree). Hopefully, there's a way to preserve all the content of RunRyder and keep it available, because it sure isn't available on FB or any other social media site.

Thank you mark for all your hard work. Im sorry that reality is what it is. But all good things must eventually come to an end despite what a few of us dedicated RR members desire.

RR was the first place I went to get started learning when I got my first heli over 10 years ago, and it lead me to many days of fun and frustration. I myself fantasized about making helicopter parts, starting an online e-business and revamping a certain model as a true money earning side gig... but Im often reminded of the reality of where this hobby is and where it is going.

Being a software developer sitting in a room left alone I often spend most of my day hoping for a post that I can participate in and share my experiences, knowledge and opinions... but just as you have stated, those are fewer and fewer. My own kids dont even have any interest in the hobby despite my support for it... So I too find myself less interested in it as time goes on as there is practically no one in my area to connect with given the constraints of life demands... and if there is they aint interested.

If this boat goes down...so be it. The hobby for me will be going with it too.

Im RR to the end.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Its not your software. This web design is second to none. If you cant make money with this website its the hobby, sell the software and retire

Team Synergy, Team FBL Rotors-------if its not broke...it will be!

Im RR to the end.
Me too. More to come as soon as I figure out how to say it without writing a novel.....

The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

Sorry to hear it Mark, it was great speaking with you at events. I always appreciated the coverage from RR. I've only been flying for 12 years but it sure has changed. Best of luck in what ever you do!

OMG
Does this mean the end of RR...? The website will no longer exist...? First quick UK, now RR....who's next...? This is a sad sad day. Thank you Mark for everything you've contributed to the R/C community especially helicopters. I've been following RR since I started playing with Heli's back in 2006. This is going to be a great loss to the r/c Heli community.

Not EOL
Software Dev may have ended, but it's not the end-of-the-line. There are many awesome features Mark has designed into this site over the recent past that will serve it will into the future.

Now, it's just a matter of keeping our discussions going and keeping the bandwidth paid for. I'm pretty sure we can swing that.

Long live RR !

That’s just wishful thinking given the course we are already far into .

Mark, first of all I want to thank you for this site, and everything you have done to promote the hobby. I agree with your observations in your OP and I have wanted to point them out before. I have been in this hobby since I was 5 (I remember reed sets) It is sad to see what has happened to the entire facet, considering where tech is going and this part cannot even support itself.

Most of the people that are currently getting in or have only been is for a short period of time, are not true hobbyist They are just passing through for a short stint. People say it is the economy but that is only a small part. Society has changed, there is no going back. We will never see this hobby recover! You have seen the top of the mountain! I was told years ago "You can't go home" And I have found that, so true in so many instances.

Time changes everything
I have been around since 2007.
Always wanted to go to ircha but not able for various reasons.

To me ircha and runryder have been the icons of this hobby. To lose either one would ruin the landscape and leave it bare.

spending time, paying attention

Mark, thank you for the site and the fun. RR was my first and really only site in the heli hobby. I was by myself and struggling to learn the hobby for over a year when I found RR. I could not have learned to fly RC Helis without RunRyder. I don’t post much these days, so I guess I’m part of the problem, I am sorry for that and very thankful this site was there when I needed it.

RIP ROMAN
