I love RR, usually on here several times a day. At work when i can sneak in a few min.. I remember when RC Online went away. That's what led me here. For the videos at first then it grew and grew.
Point is weren't you around flying helis before RunRyder?
Or am i really a Old Fart?

I think you're all being a bit over dramatic. It's up to us to continue flying , not anyone else.

I believe our hobby is shrinking to a more normal level. Some areas like the scale helicopter world are alive and well, growing bigger and better than ever. I started flying RC helicopters because of my fascination with full size helicopters, which I also fly. When I mention that I fly model helicopters to friends they usually ask "what type of helicopter, a JetRanger? (or other type)". They then usually comment on the strange crazy flipping around flying they've seen on facebook or youtube and comment that it is pretty weird. The fact is the average member of the general public don't understand, relate to or have any interest in 3d helicopter flying.

This is a pass time where guys fly toy helicopters in mostly out of the way locations, with models that don't really resemble anything you would ever see at you local airport and flying manoeuvres that just don't seem to make sense. The rate at which the hobby began to grow in the 90's, then the 3d craze that followed almost guaranteed it's eventual implosion. Mass marketing and the constant call for improvement through new models, most people having never actually reached the performance limits of what they were currently flying. Although often beneficial, technology has simplified the craft and intrigue out of the hobby. New models just don't require anywhere near the knowledge or attention to detail. This creates short attention spans and rapid onset of boredom.

I used to dislike the RC car drivers but you know what, at least their cars and buggies actually look like cars and buggies. I mean what the f%%k is a Goblin meant to be? The model train world is doing very well and luckily for them the perceived boredom and nerdiness of trains has kept the extreme action crowd well away. I was really hoping the 3d crowd would eventually move away to multi copters and leave the rest of us to the more humble marvel of conventional and graceful, perhaps boring helicopter flight.

If I've offended anyone, then so be it. I really don't care. I have never really shared this hobby with anyone because no one else does it in my area, but that's ok there's always RunRyder (maybe not for long).

I really love this hobby and I'm in it for the long run and don't really care if most walk away. I love my Hirobo Freya and my other helicopters and will never need the newest and coolest toy.

I'm not competing with anyone else, I'm just one man with a fleet of toy helicopters.

Rc came before the internet and doesn't need it to survive.
However the internet provides easy access.
That being said, a hobby doesn't die until the hobbyist loses interest.

Yeah your still stuck in the 80s...
The internet is how information is now spread to newcomers or inquiring minds. Back then we had magazines and hobby shops... we wanted to know about new stuff, we looked at the magazine rack, picked something of interest and then proceeded to go further based on our desire. If we wanted to know if there were any Hobby shops around we picked up a phone book, (those are all but dead too BTW), now we google it, On that note Have you all not noticed that book stores are also dying? look what happened to our Helicopter magazines... those days are long gone and not coming back.

Now the buzz is FB, YouTube and your choice of search engine (google, bing)... and the ADs they contain the gossip they start is how you spread information which vast majority of the time provides you a link to their website.... rarely a phone number, nearly never a mailing address.

without new blood to fill our ranks the hobby will pull back to a point of obscurity... and those that remain will use ONLY the internet and the ADs they can peddle to stay alive.

when people stop talking about a hobby, its death is not far behind. the death of a hobby does not mean no one plays with it... it means the supporting businesses are rare.

the next new hobby is synthetic girlfriends

I sure hope no one that is interested in getting into this hobby comes across this thread

What the hell is with most but not all of you people in this thread ??

Is this the thread of pessimistic, negative nancys, whiners group or what ?

We have Mr I am going to quit if RR closes up (nice troll Bait) go ahead
I am sure you can find some other place for your pessimism

Mr nothing good has happened since FBL was invented and hates 3D and also doesnt care what others think about his opinion
If you dont care then why are you whining on here

MR we need junk crap so people can waste a lot time an money so they they can get frustrated and quit before they even start
yeah that makes a lot of sense

Why dont all of you go start some 10 step support group some where else
just leave out any reference to RC Helicopters
because none of you are helping the hobby with all this BS

The hobby is what it is quit crying and whining about it
and GO FLY

...well for your information banshee... it appears we few are the only people on RR that bother to post. Why dont you post more "kumbaya" style posts... maybe that will turn things around.

or better yet buy RR from mark and ban all the negative a-holes from posting. that should be the perfect business model. (maybe it is?)

And thats probably a lot of the problem here
all the constant negativity

who wants to read that all the time

as far as kumbaya
Im a realist
I change what I can and I do the best with what I have
I dont focus on the negative unless it can be changed
all the whining and grousing isnt going to change anything

I enjoy the hobby for what it is

Not for what it was or will be
I cant control that so there is no point in constantly yapping about it in a negative fashion

Ok the good news is that there are still some great brands available:

Align
Hirobo
Henseleit
Mikado
Miniature Aircraft
Minicopter
Quest (Kyosho)
PSG
RC Depot/JR
SAB
Shape
Synergy
Takumi
Vario

I understand these are mostly high end brands but this is a high end hobby.

As for the SDX it’s still available from the US importer in several formats and parts are super easy to find.

guess then next question would be... When will he pull the plug... it costs money to host a website... are we to assume (he said) November is the month things go dark?

Also what happens to everything data wise? our pictures in the galleries, the posts.... all to be deleted?

Is there a possibility that someone else can buy RR? would he even consider selling it?

This ones mine!

Lets sell a new guy a Goblin 700 and see how quickly he gets frustrated (and bankrupt) shall we! Yeah, it would take no time or money to learn on one of those right!

Furthermore, why is this post where it is? This is to me an obscure difficult to find location when it should just be in the helicopter main discussion section.

This site is becoming quite confusing to me.
