Picked up a lightly used 550X. Amazing how every used copter I have bought has had several minor and some major set up issues. I wonder how many people give up on a model or learning to fly helis due to poorly flying models? The tail rotor linkage was not set up properly and I had to redo 30% of the AR7200 set up. First flight control was good, but the swash was “busy” and it was twitching in cyclic. I dialed down the #1 pot and test flew twice. It improved, but not perfect. I noticed it had 520 cm Edge carbon fiber main blades, looked new, and stock, but scuffed tips, tail blades. I picked up some Japanese made 550cm DY Fiberglass blades on a trip to Japan. They are cool looking wide cord with cranked tips and asymmetric airfoil; I don’t do inverted or hard aerobatics. Changed the main blades and put new stock plastic tail blades on it. Flies like a dream now!

Got a second one I’m redoing now. Hopefully get that one to fly as well as the first.

Great job! It used to make me go hummmm aswell, now we find it to be quite normal.

There is the right way and every other way to do it.
If we are interested > we do what is “easy and convenient”
If we are committed > we do it “until”

Most lack decipline, often neglect and a pro at taking short cuts. We all need a touch of OCD to extract hobby’s full potential. It is a fun and rewarding past time ...however we need to do our part. We only get out as much out as we contribute.

I still fly a 550x and it is a great heli. I think many were bought by people who had only bought smaller blade helis "ready to fly" in the past. They failed just as you said because they were unaware of how to really do setup. I think this was a failure of the marketing strategy by Blade. This heli deserved to be a success - it was a great heli for the money.

Got the 2nd one flying, but chasing down a vibration issue with the tail. I put fresh Zeal carbon tail blades on it, checked the linkage and servo, both linkage guides were loose, took the entire tail assembly apart and lubed it. The tail rotor grips etc were a little light on lube, but assembled correctly. Still have the problem and have a strong inclination that the torque tube is moving around. Maybe the plastic bearing/guides are moving or non existent. I am slowly gathering the parts for a 600X tail boom set up so that will be a perfect next step. I plan on putting this in a 600 Size Bell 222 scale fuselage.

Pulled the boom off and checked the torque tube bearings. They were not spaced correctly and one was not glued in place. reassembled and test flew again. Still had the vibe, although not as often. Kind of weird. Pulled the complete tail rotor gearbox with stock blades off my other 550X and it flew smoothly. Narrowed down to something in tail. noticed the bearings for tail shaft were a bit loose so replaced those; 10*5*4 BLH1642 same as 450X main shaft bearing. Still had the problem. Next was to put stock blades on instead of the NEW Zeals. Problem eliminated. WTF! It was just the new Zeal tail blades the whole time. I put new blades on to start just to eliminate the possibility and they ended up causing a problem. I literally checked everything else. Shop gave me another set of Zeal’s to try and same problem. I did a quick and dirty balance check on my micro scale and both blades were 4.2g. I’m done with Zeal at this point.

I suggest a balancer vs a scale. Always best to check CG and balance the main and tail blades.

Would save a lot of headaches [just like what you’ve just discovered].

BTW
The blade 130X gave us a lot of training on trouble shooting.

Setup issues caused by hobby shop
This past summer I bought a used 550E with 2 flights on it.
The guy I bought it from, had it built and set up by a local hobby shop.
I rebuilt the model and corrected a few build errors.
I shook my head in disbelief a few times.

It takes very little to cause an unwanted vibration.
A bad bearing and not all bearings weigh the same.
Same for bolts the weights can vary.

Blades can be the same weight but if the CG's don't match. You get vibes. It can happen on tail blades too.

Most people quit the hobby because they lose interest.
Lack of support, expensive and time + weather.

For myself it's time and weather.
Winter sucks
Then summertime is worktime.

spending time, paying attention
