Ok guys, after 15 flights on my new Diabolo 700UL, I have 2 issues.

First, my main grips have developed a little vertical play if I pull up and push down on them (less than about 1mm). Horizontallly (in and out of the hub) there's still NO play.

Then, in addition to the grips issue, I just noticed the mainshaft has about .5mm vertical play if I pull up and push down on the head.

I don't recall, but I'm almost positive there was no vertical play in it before.

So can you Diabolo experts tell me what's going on?

Do I now need to pull the mainshaft and shim it? I'm thinking I should add a .2 or .5 shim under the long spacer.

How about the grips? Do I need to add a shim (or shims) there? I just don't want to preload the thrust bearings.

Thanks for your help!

Grips: Ok as it is if no end play. Leave it alone.

Mainshaft: Shim it out. Everything has just bedded in after you've flown it some. Mine did that too. Needed a 0.003" shim.

Thanks Ben! So I haven't actually measured the few extra shims in my kit but I assumed they were .2 or .5

If they are, I'm guessing I'll have to find a source for the 0.003" shims. Would you mind telling me where you found yours?

I thought mine came in the kit, but I also have a box o' shims I've accumulated over 20 years .

If the kit shims are too thick, see what Amain has. Car guys shim a lot of tranny parts. Other heli mfg's might use them too.

Well, it turns out I had several different thicknesses in the kit.

.09, .2, .22 and .28 so I put a .2 in there and it seems to be perfect.

Now, if you think I should leave the blade grips at this time, I will.

If it get worse in the next 20-30 flights I'll probably pull the grips and take a closer look.

Thanks again for your help!

Have a great time at IRCHA if you're going. I will be skipping this year but plan to attend in 2019.

Hi Ben.

I now have 38 flights and have slightly more (more than 1mm) vertical play, (still no horizontal play) but was advised by my local guys to add shims.

Question #1: where do I put the additional shims? There is 1 shim on each side right next to the black rubber grommet that holds the o-rings in (initial build). I was told to put the extras all the way in to the hub as well. (assuming just outside the black rubber grommet that holds the O-rings in). That is also where there is already a 047 shim.

However, in the Diabolo 700 manual, it states:

"Add on the outside of each side (between shim washer 047 and radial bearing 071) about 0.2-0.3mm more of shim washers."

Does this mean I should add them behind the outer most bearing instead of next to the black rubber grommet again? I actually tried both and didn't seem to see or feel a difference. Which way is the "correct" way? Which way do you do it?

Question #2: I tried adding (1) 0.2 and (1) 0.1 on each side and the bearings felt a bit notchy when rotating them. I then tried just the 0.2 on each side and the grips were less notchy but still had a little more play than I thought they should have.

I don't like to do this but I ended up using (1) 0.2 on one side and both a 0.2 plus a 0.1 on the other side. (This still felt like a compromise as the grips still feel a tiny bit notchy & there is still just a touch of vertical play). I guess being uneven by 0.1mm is no big deal so I'm tempted to just leave it.

That said, others have said I should have NO notchy feeling at all, so I'm wondering if I should live with the extra vertical play (even if it's 1mm) over having slightly notchy feel to the bearings.

What do you do? No vertical play at all (but thrust bearings feeling notchy) or, some vertical play and thrust bearings not notchy?

Also, can some of you confirm that I put the shims where they are supposed to be?

Thanks for your (and anyone else's) input.

I never take notchy over a tiny bit of play. Ever. Grips should smooth.
