I didn't know where to put this. It seems like it could be in a few different places.

Anyway. I need another 2S LiIon battery today and thought I'd make a video. A few friends have asked what I use for a receiver pack so I thought I'd put something on YouTube.

Just thought I'd share. Comments welcome.

Good job!

I would prefer to run 2S2P... Redundancy with that type of cells is better.

Why do you say "Redundancy with that type of cell is better?" I do assemble some batteries in a 2S2P configuration but it is only for current draw considerations. Panasonic 18650s are some of the most reliable batteries I've ever used.

Yes.. It depends...

From duralite Q&A

https://duraliteflightsystems.com/i...formation_id=11

Q. Why do I need a pack with Redundancy?

A. Redundancy creates a safety margin where if there is a problem with any cell in a pack the pack will continue to operate at half of the packs rated capacity at normal voltage. The larger and more powerful 4-cell packs are assembled with two - two cell packs in parallel (2s2p). This paralleling creates "in pack or Redundancy" with 4 cells working together to allow higher amp output for larger jobs. Any reduction of capacity becomes apparent when your normal pre-flight ground testing is done. We offer Redundancy in our larger and more powerful four cell packs including the DURALITE SENTINEL Lithium-Ion, LiFePo and the A123 packs.

Well, Duralite certainly is not wrong. Two packs in parallel certainly offers redundancy and that would offer an increased level of safety should a single cell fail. That is true for any battery type or chemistry. It might be a bit misleading to say "redundancy with that type of cells is better." Panasonic 18650s are legendary for there reliability. There are over 7,000 of them in every Tesla. Many laptops use them. They are extremely reliable, predictable cells.

With that said, I often assemble 2P packs for models that draw higher than average current in flight. Panasonic 18650 are rated for 6 amps (depending where you read). That is sufficient for all my fixed wing models and many of my helicopters. However, my glow FBL models equipped with 5 MKS servos are drawing approximately 5 amps continuous in flight and I'm certain peak draw is well above that. That is higher than I'm comfortable with for a 2S1P pack and in these instance I parallel 2 packs.

I'm agreed!

On my experience, 2s2p offers more confiability in terms of potential failure. In most of the cases, you only need to fail in one lithium cell and you are in big trouble.
The common failure is high internal resistance in one cell , droping voltage very fast... That is why 2s2p is very convenient.

With Lipo packs 2s, is very unusual to have big differences on internal resistance. Certanly, I dont know why...

Probably, my soldering procedure is related...
