I Have Watercraft to Thank for My R/C Addiction
Hey All,

I've been looking at zero posts in the Watercraft forum here on RC.Runryder and thought I'd post.

Sometime in the early '70s I discovered Remote Control. Because I was only 10(ish) years old I had a bad combination of low funding and few skills. For these reasons I couldn't accept the possibility of crashing and airplane. The money and time lost on an airplane crash was more than I could afford.

Lucky for me there was a very active R/C boat club in Oklahoma City. I went every weekend and watched them run. I met a lot of very nice and helpful club members back then. I still remember Joe Bishop and Bill MacAbee(sp?) answering my 1001 questions.

After hundreds of hours of anguish and study I finally landed on a Dumas Deep-Vee 60 kit. I still didn't have the money or knowledge to complete the project quicly but with effort, reading and lots of time I finally finished the boat sometime in late high school/early college.

I still have the boat and it still runs. While it is still water ready, I don't take it out very often. The boat is from a time before flex shafts and uses Octura universal joints. Mine are beginning to show some wear and I don't know how easy they will be to replace. Because I haven't run it in a year or two I would need to insure the fuel system and batteries are healthy. But most of all, like the airplanes of the 70s I couldn't afford to loose, I can't risk loosing this model. As the old gambling expression goes, "If you can't afford to loose, don't play the game". Ironic isn't it?

Did I just create the sub-topic "Watercraft - Antiques"?

Hehehehe. Yea, I suppose you did.

I used to work for the foundry that made parts for Dumas. Props, lead weights for sailboats,,,,,, Really nice bunch of folks. That was around 1980.

Well. I don't have a sailboat or a gator head but I do have a duck. My wife and kids gave it to me for my birthday a few years ago. I love it. It's not going to change your life but it's something fun to do at the lake.

I'll add - You've got to have your head right with a R/C duck. Kids will love you and adult will smile politely while silently wondering if you might be slightly touched.

Hooo Yesss. Mr. Quacky is 100% water cooled jet duck. As for the handling, I'll go out on a limb here, and you can quote me if you'd like, but I'll stick my head out and say this is easily the best handling duck I've ever owned. Bar none.

I wouldn't normally do this but since you begged, I uploaded a short vid of Mr. Quacky in action. As is often the case, my wife is more entertaining than the subject of the video.

That's awesome. Maybe you need to upgrade it to a 6S pack and see if it'll plane off. Hell, the local wildlife can't get any more scared of it...

I have a variety of vintage and new boats.

I am going to be putting on the market a 1973 OPS .20 Twin (#7) (marine). Its such a neat motor and i have too much stuff now.. (less then 95 were built).

Nice boats Grim.

I too am not a great lover of electric boats. I have exactly one. A Zig-Zag. I freshened it up a bit. It'll knock a hole in a pool liner - easy.

I had a boat for about a minute, then I sold it. never even got it in the water. No place to run it where I live. Looked like it would be fun too.
