Hello All

It's been some time since I have posted anything of substance.

90 size
6s 5000 Main
6s 1400 Tail
Kontronik Tango 45-10
Kontronik Kora Custom 9T
Castle Ice HV160 Lite
Castle Ice 100
8717 servos in cyclic and tail
Mini V-Bar
Futaba S-Bus Rx
Hercules BEC

AUW 9.5 lb
Flight time 4mins

I finally got around to flying my favorite heli. Haven't flown for about a year...a little sloppy but fortunately I remembered enough to keep it out of the dirt.

Sorry about the video, my wife still hasn't figured out what "don't follow the helicopter but keep it in frame means" oh well it's good enough.

BTW I was in a huge open field no where near that road...lots of depth.

In short a 6s 90 does work. It's not power house on 6s but battery cost are half of the norm and the available power requires some management but is more than enough to learn.

Do any of you have a unique helicooter project that you've worked on?

To be clear on how this thing works.

The tail motor is mounted at the end of the boom. It uses normal tail pitch mechanics that slide on the motor shaft.

The main and tail motors are in separate power sources.

The tail motor each and the BEC are powered off the 1300 6s battery.

The main motor is on the 6s 5000.

The power sources must be separate to keep the power to the tail Rock solid for good rpm regulation to keep the tail gyro happy. BTW this hell uses 50 size tail blades.

There are 2 throttles to manage on this hell; startequence is as follows.

Start tail and wait until it reaches desired RPM.

After tail is running start the main motor and wait until it reaches desired RPM and have fun.

After landing shut down the main motor first and then shut down the tail motor.

BTW you can do some crazy autos with this and never loose tail power and the main blades have much more reserve since they are not coupled to the tail.

Cool design from Gerd from Minicopter. I will admit what I am showing is heavily modified from the original. I removed many support brackets I felt could be removed in the main frame to reduce weight. I replaced the tail mechanics with one from another heli for mechanical geometry reasons and weight reduction. The tail motor mount is from minicopter and it replaced this very unique torque tube drive with the motor in the main frame. The way I have it setup now is much simpler and is much easier to maintain.

It's not fast and it's not powerful but in this configuration is good fun and has more than enough power to do a lot of things in slower motion. Lower RPM flying is popular in Europe so this concept may still be desirable.

From a cost perspective I would say the electronics cost half of any of the modern helis. Battery costs are half but it flys for about the same duration as a high performance 12s 90. Where it lacks in brute power and speed it makes up in the auto department because it can do things those others can't

Cool to see it flying again.
I need to do another Dual Drive E9. Go your route with the power system though.

I flew one of these at IRCHA in 2008. What a cool machine to play with. I believe it was misskimos.

Very unique! Love it! Very light for a 700 electric, is there room for a 6000mah pack to increase flight time and/or power?

How long does the tail motor pack last?

60% of the time, it works every time!

Gerds Dual Drive concept works quite well but I will admit it is more of a specialty item for an experienced modeler.

There is room for a 6000 but I don't know if it would yield much more power due to the weight increase. I am not at the battery limit but I have to be mindful of the controller current limit and the motor limits (tango is maxed out). The rpm for the main rotor is 1650ish which feels pretty good to me for what I can do and 4mins is long enough...I need a short intermission to calm the nerves

Based in my estimates and assuming I at most use 80% from the 6s 1300 I would say the tail should last about 6mins (avg current draw is about 10a). The key with the tail that the battery voltage must stay pretty steady under load to not upset the tail motor governor and keeps the tail gyro happy too.

Sounds like you have it right around the sweet spot.

The other advantage is you can use the heli as a weed whacker! Hold it by the skids maybe?!
