allns47, I'm sorry you felt it was awful, and it does upset me a bit if you did not have a good time. We don't put this event on to bring in a huge turnout; in fact, it started as only our local friends and a few who traveled in to camp just getting together for a weekend of flying and friendship (thus the "Impromptu" in the name of it). Last year was the first year we sanctioned it because we wanted to raise money for a Walk of Fame brick for Darrell "Big D" Bell. The only reason it was sanctioned this year was because it was so big last year and we wanted that extra safety precaution. We didn't ask for any pilot fees and we didn't hold any type of raffles; we used money out of our own pockets to provide a great barbecue pulled pork dinner on Saturday night and only asked for a donation to help cover the cost of the meat. For us, this is about the camaraderie and friendship and every one, whether jets, 3D, fixed-wing, or helicopter, having a fun time.

Dang, that actually sounds like an awesome event! An event purely for the joy of flying. Ain't nothing wrong with that!

Good morning allns47, as my wife has stated, we are very sorry if you did not have a good time, I am very unsure as to why you didn't? We did not put out that is was a huge event, nor that it was Helicopter specific. We did have 49 pilots that signed the AMA Sanction paperwork, that is more than a lot of Club Events get and they charge a Pilot fee.

Now add a Saturday night BBQ that we only asked for donations for the 80lbs of pulled pork, 20lbs of chicken that we purchased and I think the event was just about perfect! I was very up front at the Saturday morning Pilots meeting that if you felt you could not afford to put anything in the can, please just come and eat with us anyway as this gathering is all about flying and fellowship with friends in the Hobby and not about recouping the money for food.

We had Sailplanes, WWI planes, WWII planes, 3D planes, Helicopters and Jets at the gathering all getting along with each other and I thought everyone had a GREAT time!

We also had 2 dedicated trainers with BuddyBoxes that flew almost continuously the entire weekend for the kids (or big kids that were interested in learning to fly).

Again, we are very sorry that you did not have fun, if we had charged a pilots fee I would happily refund it to you, but since there was not one, I can't do anything but say we are very sorry.

And that's exactly what we wanted! I know the helicopter line was away from the main paved runway a bit (across the parking lot from where the big tents were and airplanes flew), but the local heli guys didn't seem to mind (or at least I didn't hear any complaints). We always make sure they have somewhere to fly and that it is mowed. They were completely welcome to come over and fly at the mainline as well (Gary Wright flew his low-headspeed heli at the mainline several times when no one else was in the air). We just asked that they let us know when they wanted to fly so that there wasn't any issue with the pattern that the airplanes were flying.

Friday was a little slow with a low crowd, but we really weren't expecting a lot of pilots then, and we did have a bit of downtime on Saturday because of rain showers, but it was right around lunchtime, so folks went to eat or just hung around and chatted under the tents. Sunday was slower because many people left after Saturday, so it was just a relaxed day of flying wherever, whatever, and we fixed all of the leftovers for lunch.

Free Event, free food, mixed flight line doesn't sound so bad to me. Forget the raffles and all that BS anyway, go to fly... That's what this hobby should be about flying.

As one of the local helicopter enthusiasts, I had zero issue at all flying where we were assigned to fly. There were no less than 9 helicopter enthusiasts that got at least a flight or more at the heli flight station over the weekend . There were tons of helicopter flights that took place! We even had a generator at our disposal so we didn't have to walk back and forth to charge batteries. (Thanks Jason!)

In fact, other than positioning of the sun at later points in the day; I preferred staying out of the way of the pilots flying on the main flight line, since there were a lot of very expensive turbine powered models that tend to take up some space in both their flights and on the deck. It's not that I didn't want to socialize, it's that I only had helicopters to fly. Plus, the pattern was pretty much full all day with planes, and jets that require use of the paved runways. Our Whirlybirds don't, so we had a great time watching others use the runways before and after their flights while we joked about it.

"Runways? We don't need no stinkin' runways!"

I don't see how it was in any way horrible. In fact it was a great event in my opinion. Got to see familiar faces, flying some very impressive models, and chowing down on some awesome food and drinks for dinner, and lunch the next day.

Socializing led to me learning quite a bit about models I had never flown before. Honestly, talking with other pilots sent me off with a little more knowledge about said craft, and I may be buying a sport plane and a racing quad thanks to their advice.

Additionally, we even had the owners of the local hobby shop delivering parts, kits, fuel, and some tasty grown up lemonade for the cookout! Thanks Toys Forever Model and Hobbies!

Greg even got a ride in an awesome Essex hot rod!

So, I apologize if you seemed to think that it was horrible. Everyone else that attended seemed to be having a great time. At least that's how I saw it.

Thanks again Greg and Jenni! Had a blast as usual!

I don't know what you're definition of funfly BUT it was a good attendance more likely more than last year's, great variety of airplanes, jets and helicopters. It was punctuated with great FREE food at night. And by the way, did I mentioned it was FREE!
Any funfly takes a lot of time and effort to make it happen. So please show some respect. If you don't like it for whatever reason, be respectful and keep it to yourself.

Take it easy ... this isn't worth an argument; after all, it was just a fun fly. He wasn't being disrespectful and he's entitled to his opinion. I just don't want him to leave with a sour taste in his mouth and not come back, especially if it was for any reason beyond attendance. I would feel awful if that happened.

allns47, not a problem, and thanks for clarifying! We really weren't expecting a huge turnout, and that's fine with us. I personally think a smaller crowd is sometimes better, that way everyone gets to converse with one another and have a chance to get into the air. And since it's just myself and Greg putting it on and not a club, it can sometimes be a lot of work, especially with the dinner. But we're glad you had fun and hope you come back next year and spend your Memorial Day weekend at AMA!
