Hi all. My OWB in the auto rotation case destroyed itself about a week ago. Finally got around to replacing it, but I can't remember which way it goes into the auto rotation case. The side with the writing "lock" facing up or down. Anyone have any advice??

Slip the shaft into the bearing and rotate the bearing while holding the shaft..... the bearing should lock onto the shaft and turn it in the direction the blades spin.....

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

Thanks Juan. The words face upwards. I keep hearing that the OWB have a tendancy to not last very long. This one had a life of about 6 months. Not sure if this is normal?

Doesn't sound normal to me.....

Lubricate it with automatic transmission fluid on initial install and then periodically during use.....

My understanding is that if you use grease, it attracts dirt and then the grease and dirt together act as a sort of grinding compound which I'm sure is not good.....

One way bearings also wear the shaft or hub they run on.. If the one way is trashed, you should replace the other part too, else the service life could be affected.

+1 on the light oil lubrication! (Use a lubricant which is plastic friendly - The 'Springs' in small one way clutches are typically plastic and can harden with some oils - '3 in 1' etc!)

Get yourself the upgraded auto rotation case (0412-335).

I assume you are running the plastic auto rotation case. The same OWB is used on the freyas. The last very long when the case is upgraded. The plastic plastic tend to wear over time and it can’t handle the torque, upon upgrade your OWB should last very long.

The OWB will not trash the sleeve that rides in it. The reason it dies prematurely is because it was a Torrington style as opposed to a Sprague. The Sprague is a lot better design but you can get a lot of life out of the standard one if it's is in the aluminum outer.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Think I will upgrade the auto rotation case. I have also heard that a good lubricant to use is a light coating of machine oil.
