I bought an 1886 wincester replica rifle in 45-70 for my birthday last year..super fun!..it's made by the Italian company Chiappa..it came with a standard clover leaf rear sight and a stepped "shoe" for elevation adjustment..Uberti makes a nice ladder type sight that would be great for longer yardages and also the standard clover leaf sight can be easily bumped or the shoe could fall out..so does anybody know if these two different companies would cut the dovetail in the barrel to the same specs?..

I do a great decending funnel!

Both Chiappa and Uberti 1873s in pistol calibers are popular in cowboy racing. The uberti uses a "standard" 3/8 inch. Chiappa probably does too (?) The Uberti dovetail is said to be a bit tight, so unless the Ciappas are being cut on the tight side as well, there is some risk the new sight might fit slightly lose. Beware that the dovetails are very slightly tapered and meant to be driven out from one side, unfortunately i don't recall if it is supposed to go right or left. Anyway, here is a link to some comments which might help.

I used a brass block or rod as a punch to protect the finish. Seemed to work fine. A small triangle file to fit the wedge to the barrel came in handy too. Don't file on the barrel, only the wedge.
