Some time in the mid '80s I was offered a 14 week vacation in Pensacola where I met Staff Sargent Carney, United States Marine Corp. He was an employee at the US Navy's schools command. It was the most fun I didn't know I was having. In addition to free access to calisthenics, I got a complementary haircut every week. You heard right. 14 weeks, 14 haircuts and I didn't pay for one of them. The spa began the work day at 5am and the jogging trail was open for use at 0505 for those that wanted to join in. I didn't know how much I liked running 5 minutes after getting out of bed.

I appreciated SSgt Carney USMC's immediate and open assessment of my work. It's been a while since I was told I'm lower than whale ****, the lowest thing on earth - and I probably need to hear that every so often.

A couple of years latter I saw Ronald Lee in full metal jacket and it immediately took me back. His performance was perfect. I wondered how they could have cast an actor so well suited to the roll. It seemed impossible. Of course they didn't. Ermey was a Marine first and an actor second, and it showed.

I'm going to miss him.

Gonna miss you gunny. Loved all his vids on weapons.
My first day in boot was "What the h-ll have I done ? This guy (DI) is really mean and angry."
First week "I'm gonna die !"
2nd week "Please God, I want to die now !"
3rd week "I gotta learn to get with it or die"
4 week and so on "I can do this. "
.
My right arm is a little longer than my left because I had to carry a bucket of rocks in my right hand for a week, didn't hear the command and turned left instead of right during drill. (Well maybe it was only a couple of days, but seemed like a week)

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Thank goodness I was in the Army. We had the dumbest of the dumb (back in the 60's with the draft).

Our DI explained we were so dumb, they had to cut order general orders down to three...no joke. We were not WWII caliber soldiers.

I understand the Army continues to lower standards just to meet raw numbers.

If the marines go this route, we are hosed.

God speed gunny.

One of the reasons I got out... granted I was combat arms and we didnt see as much of that as did the support MOSs, But its also the one place I will never regret being... I miss my soldiers, I miss the brotherhood, the fun we had, the misery we shared. I even actually enjoyed being deployed, life when in the combat zone was just easier, simple... look for bad guy, kill if needed, repeat the next day. Yeah we had the usual dumbass... but they made it possible to have memories in which we laugh the hardest.

I always get asked if I miss the Marines. And I always reply:

I MISS MY MARINES...OMG they were a hoot, good times and bad times,
I miss my cammies....
And I miss the openness and lack of butt-hurt mentality.

no one could have done a better job in that movie, RIP Gunny

you know I had a boss once that was an X DS, a little bitty guy, maybe weighed in at 135 pounds, he would work his head back and forth as he talked to you,, and some guy I worked with told me he was Ok, other than if you do something wrong it took him 20 minutes to straighten you out about it,, pumping gas is not that hard, but I tried not to do anything wrong LOL

the guy origionally cast to play that part??? It was the guy that was the door gunner mowing down running women and children in the field. Apparently he actually WAS a DI, but Ermey just blew their doors off as the "consultant" and they gave the other guy the minor role of the door gunner on the 50 cal..
