I am cool with technology and even embrace it most of the time....but don't care if you are 18 for 68, you have to look at the touch screen to 'touch' it, most of the time, which means 'seconds' of eyes off the road. Take it to whatever degree you want, but it is that. Seconds is all it takes....

Not such new technology. Buicks had touch screens in late 1980's Rivieras.

Gun control is like fighting drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to buy cars.

Tell me why planes are built with glass displays today. Steam is gone. A good user interface is very important. A lot of information is going into HUDs. Touch screens can present a lot of data in a small space.

I think the average person can use a touchscreen radio without crashing. Where is 10 years of crash data supporting your assertion? The radios have been around longer than that. Yes, I can use my GPS while driving, but never in heavy bumper to bumper traffic.

I still see this as a non issue. Further you do not have to be physically old to be old of mind.

different application... plus you often have two pilots or even three for commercial airliners, in the case of fighter planes, many controls are on the stick and throttle... dogfights are no longer within visual range... and the planes are now fly by wire, mostly automated which give the pilots time to play with the buttons on the sides of the screens, some advanced fighters have voice feedback for the very reason they have little time to look at the screens during battles, same thing with our attack and utility helos... and the glass displays ARE NOT TOUCH type either:
https://aviation.stackexchange.com/...ens-in-cockpits

the biggest difference is that your often not flying your plane within 1-2 seconds of the plane in front of you, nor a vehicle length beside you...

lastly is training... having just put a teenager through driving school, I can tell you it dont take much brain power to get a license nowadays after watching his fellow classmates pass..., just this morning I saw a lady eating a bowl of cereal w/spoon while driving her SUV on the highway to work... traffic speed was 80...

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

It really burns me when thousands or hundreds of thousands of hours are spent developing a product like the touch screen radio and someone comes along and rips it with comments like you see here at RR.
So spending "thousands of hours" on a product makes it acceptable, safe and useful, no I think not for some, like center console automobile touch screen, which in my opinion, increases the chance of an accident because of 'eyes off the road'..

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Ford is backing up on touch screen use in it's vehicles, replacing some controls with physical knobs and buttons.

Yeah but...
Did she have her eyes on the road?

On the other hand, had she been putting on makeup... That's when I lay on the horn and sometimes get the middle finger in reply.

I guess we can all agree that the common denominator for any potential impending accident is most likely a...distracted driver.

Note when aircraft were mentioned the word 'displays' were used. A 'glass display' does *NOT* imply a touch screen! As displays, glass is fine. It's the awkward, slow, distractive touchscreen interface used in cars that is the issue! Most (if not all) cockpit controls in aircraft are still mechanical . . . . and I doubt you will ever see landing gear, throttles, flaps on a touch . . . just no reason to do so, and ma y reasons not to!

Friends don't let friends become electrotarded . . . .
