I never understood the need to chase after likes and chronicle your time (line) via check-ins and the like. In the past 16 years Facebook has sucked some life out of the RR discussions. Hopefully things will come full circle with the communities mindset coming back to appreciate RR and it's efficient use of ones time.

When Facebook announced that what is posted to their site becomes their property (to sell), I clicked "I do not accept terms and conditions". Our relationship ended quickly after that. Facebook says you can delete the photos you upload, and you can delete your account, but they reserve the right to retain and manipulate all material you post.

I find humor that people are upset that Facebook appears to be "sharing" their "private" information. Facebook's privacy statement is really just a statement saying there is none.

I told my wife to get off FB... shes on FB for an average of 2 hours before bedtime, and its the first thing she does upon waking up... I dont doubt she FBs when taking a dump... FB has done nothing short of ruining relationships and polarizing and further exacerbating our need to be accepted and admired... even it its all made up.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Well. I suppose you could answer this then. Why? Having been a member here for 16 years, a member of HeliF* for 14, a contributor to RCU for 16 years and a member of RCG, FG, etc - plus a devout hater of Facebook, why would anyone feel the need for another model channel? Why would you feel the need to take your conversations to FB so Mark Zuckerberg can sell it to __________ (everyone)?

I just don't understand the appeal.

I don't believe the same happens here as at Facebook. Possibly I'm deluding myself but I don't believe Mark is mining the Exif data of every picture I upload and using face recognition to identify the people I'm with to determine where and with who I hang out. I don't believe Mark is cataloging vast amount of metadata on wjvail for sale to everyone from the NSA, to the DNC, to Macy's. I don't believe RunRyder has mapped out when I'm awake, when I'm at work or where I take my vacations.

Mark will be having trouble pigeonholing for me for sale without me constantly clicking "like". He might be able to ascertain I "like" model helicopters. You don't think when you click "like" on Facebook you are telling your "friends" what you like, do you? "Friends" on Facebook don't care. They don't listen. They talk. When you click "like", you're telling Facebook what you like.

I met an individual that works at the FBI office here in East-Central Mississippi. (Yes the FBI has a presence in Meridian MS.) I asked him what he mostly does. He said one of the main things they do is look at people's Facebook identity and study who is on their friends list. He didn't say he was calling RunRyder.

More doubts...I don't think what Mark Ryder might be collecting here puts him in the same tax situation as Mark Zuckerberg. Whatever Mark R might be collecting doesn't seem to carry the same value as what Mark Z has. Mark R might be able to ascertain I like OS engines and fly a Futaba radio - and that would be valuable to who? HeliProz? Ron's? ReadyRC? Min Air? Hobbico?

RR does it the old fashion way. The site's income is solely derived from on-topic in house sourced banner display advertising. The site's user demographics or underlying user information is not for sale or divulged to anyone.

I wounder if anyone appreciates RR's lack of off topic click-bate advertising? That form of advertising tracks you across the internet.

I absolutely despise click-bait ads. They are everywhere...I, for one, have noticed and I very much appreciate that you have not included that nonsense into this site.

Could not agree more. I cringe to go on HeliF**** and get all the crazy ads that have nothing to do with RC. Can't say I do not go on it once in a while, but I appreciate this site for how it is run. Mark Ryder does a great job working and updating this site, constantly. Thank you, Mark.

I like the Facebook groups such as my local dog group, buy and sell groups, local RC groups....

Aside from seeing family pictures and sharing photos.

I joined FB about a year ago I don't plan on leaving it just yet and I am careful about what personal info I post

If you are enjoying it, I'm not the one to tell you stop. More than a billion people are on Facekood and have a great time.

Just know you don't have to post. If one of your friends uploads a picture and tags you, the information in the picture will most likely report where and when you were there. So begins the data mining of ICUR1-2. That is just the tip of ridiculously large iceberg.
In December 2012, anti-virus programmer John McAfee was arrested in Guatemala while fleeing from alleged persecution in Belize, which shares a border. Vice magazine had published an exclusive interview on their website with McAfee "on the run" that included a photo of McAfee with a Vice reporter taken with a phone that had geotagged the image. The photo's metadata included GPS coordinates locating McAfee in Guatemala, and he was captured two days later.

Lots of great points being made here.
for me, facebook is like a tool. you can use it for good or evil, to promote yourself or incriminate yourself. like any tool, you need to be aware of safety measures and practice them and use lots of common sense. like tools, not all are for use by anyone. some folks have no clue how to use a tool correctly, safely or wisely.
my experience with fb has been mostly a pleasant one just like RR has. I have met many people in the hobby and made many friends here and abroad as well as reconnect with people from the past.
as for the privacy thing, well its simple, if you don't want it out there, don't post it.
I certainly enjoy the entertaining videos as well as funny tid bits and can see where a good hour or more can be spent just looking. I do the same here on the forums.
I am glad RR is RR and FB is FB

@Wjvail

You sure took it overboard. My comment was very simple. This site belongs to Mark and if he sells it, all data goes with it. Should he announce the selling of the site before hand, it gives you the chance to delete your account. Whether such action will be followed by many, it may or not decrease value of site.

However, even if you delete your account, what may have been datamined is as simple as copying the content. While info of guys playing with toy helicopters may not be of interest to anyone in particular, the off topics politics certainly paints a broad picture of characters in here that chose to express themself...candidly. As mentioned, if you want privacy keep it to yourself and if paranoid, get off the grid.

@Mark
I read the privacy notice and hats off for such. Even if policy was not as written, I would still be here and thanks for site.

I cringe when I click on a link that takes me to the freak site and see all those cheesy ads. It's like the tabloids rack you see at practically any big store register. I get a chuckle at some of the headlines.

Delete your Facebook profile if you are not using it anymore. That is just common sense. I deleted my "My Space" account and my AOL account when I stopped using them.
Or, you can "Deactivate" your Facebook account instead.

But, 2 things:
1st: If you want to keep using Facebook, how about you lock down your account the way you should have done it in the first place?
How to control your Facebook privacy and apps
You have the power to lock down the privacy settings
I finally opened a FB account 4 years ago because "I had to".
It took me about 2 days to get everything locked down in a way that I could feel comfortable with.
With the guidance from this link, it might take you 10min.

2nd: I rate all web sites based on the number of attempts to show ads or place cookies on my PC.
A high number of ads being blocked means (in my mind) it most likely has no valuable content.

RR consistently rate 1 ad blocked
The web site I listed above "http://www.connectsafely.org"; rates 4 ads blocked.
RCG rates 12 ads blocked
HF rates 14 to 16 ads blocked.
FB is around 90 ads blocked per hour.
Pandora blasts me with 300+ ads blocked per hour.

Most web site's "product" is the users (you and me).
They keep track of things like: How many unique visits per day? Where are the unique visits coming from? How long do they stay on the site? Where parts of the site are they visiting?
These are the details that make the product (you and me) profitable
Web sites use this product to get higher rates from advertisers when we click through to advertisers sites.

I like RR because Mark keeps it clean and straight forward and there is no attempt to trick you into clicking where you shouldn't.
I went to the HF site a couple of days ago on a PC that didn't have uBlock Origins installed and it was eye-opening to see all the "Click-Bait" banner ads. It was crazy.
I may not go back to them after my suspension is lifted.

if you think you can lock down your online account your fooling yourself...

Being a software developer and Database guy I can tell you that ALL your data is an open book to anyone on FB development team... And if its open to them... its open for sale to anyone with enough money to buy access.

No Facebook here . I feel I have no drama by not being part of Facebook . Sure, there are some good stories that come from social media but I can pick up the phone to find out how my “friends” are doing .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

I have a pretty much blank facebook account, still there are the links to family and friends. I wish that it would dry up and blow away. There should be incripted alternatives.
