Gents,

I've had my heli in storage for 6+ years.
For about 20 minutes the GY701 seemed to be operating normally.
Suddenly, the OLED display on the Control Amp is blank (as in dark/black). The Gyro sensor LED shows red double flash (slow 1/2 sec).

Would it be correct to assume that the Control Amp is the issue (with the blank OLED)?

Thanks for any thought on this.
C.

According to instruction manual,
Slow red flash mean governor warning. Check your setup.

Screen black.... Probable you setup a power saving option.

Many thanks for your reply. I did a bit more of an online search; and it turns out that there was lots of issues with FUTABA GY701 OLED's back then and that these had to be replaced. I've contacted Futaba to see what they say. I have a total of 25h on one unit and 12h on another unit. 6 years of not using, and they both failed. One initially had lines through the OLED, and then slowely turned darker and darker and finally after about 4-5 minutes the OLED died out. Bad quality assurance, I'd say.

Yes, I'm not impressed at all!
I've emailed Futaba (The US side of it, as there are none in Portugal, and the reference Futaba makes to "worldwide" does not seem to exist). My worry is that I've got another 3 (yes three) CGY750 units that are installed - for how long will they last "unused"? Let's see what reply Futaba comes back with. I shall report back here.

Flybarless gyros... I would rather mess with Helis and laptops at the Same time... And get rid of nasty gy701-750 Futaba screen.

I still like the option of doing quick adjustments on the unith, at the field, without having to connect a laptop.

Please keep us posted on Futaba's response. I too have an CGY 750 and it too has a line in the screen......some times. It still works.... but would be great if there were a permanent fix? I've been flying Futaba for 45 years. Not saying that there are not problems, but I know they will fix it. With the new 760, I hope they don't leave the 750's hanging.

By the way... My spectraG is running with this gy701 and no failure at this time...

What cause that failure ?

Vibrations?
Welding... Opps... Soldering poor quality
Case press the screen or circuitry...stress on welding pins?
Too much preasure with velcros...
Lucky day when you purchase that gadget...
Bad power saving program...

Any idea?

Dont tell me to buy the gy760... Please...

"Welding"? Seriously????
I doubt that you can find a single weld in any electronics . . .
I suspect you meant soldering?

Too much preasure with velcros...
I can't rule out that this (tight pressure with the velcro) is part of the reason. I noticed that on my third heli I had cushioned the controller unit better and that one has a functional unit.

Please keep us posted on Futaba's response.
As expected, the Futaba support is more or less useless and worth considering when choosing product brand.

USA response; "..We only handle distribution and service of Futaba products in North America and Canada. Please see this web page http://www.futabarc.com/futdist.html to find the distributor in your area who can answer your inquiries. .."

Hong Kong response (where I lived and purchased the units);

1st email; "..We could send your devices to Futaba Japan for service, the process usually takes around 3 months, and the shipping cost and repair charges will be on your account. .."

2nd email;"..As we know from Futaba, they do not release the part numbers or supply the parts to end-users. .."

And yet another option: Tony Stillman at Radio South in the US will likely work on it as well. Modest shipping for such a small package.

Check the OLED thread in the Flybarless forum too.

The turnaround time for the unit if sent to Japan is likely vastly exaggerated.

Good recomendation.

My GV-1 , because of high vibration on my spectraG, the screen when off and fail.

It was a pain in the neck to resoldered each pin of that tiny screen. The circuit had double side so one pin were two actual connections.
When I finished doing the job, the case didnt fit... Well, dremel tool with that...

Now, my GV-1 is resting on my desk, awaiting for a heli to Fly again, and the new gy701 is doing the job, fine!

Fail on Gy701 screen could be the Same problem, even worst.

Repair that little monster it is better for profesional.

I'm no electrician, but I opened the GY701 controller unit (2 screws!), removed the board, the micro cable connecting to the (OLED), the screen and put it all back together. It took a total of 5 minutes. It takes absolutely NO specialist to perform this, it's really a simple task. I shall photo the process and publish here, when I've received the replacement OLEDs.

Thanks for the suggestion, well noted. A friendly member in the UK has helped out with two units on this occasion.

Ok... So, it is a simple screen failure.
I was thinking on other problems.

In your opinion, that screen needs some sort of foaming or something to avoid vibrations...? If it is easy to remove, it is easy to vibe...
