I remember when we could bring guns to school as long as they were cased, unloaded, and in our locker during school hours, and nobody ever killed another student with a gun. Of course we didn't have video games that gave you points or extra lives for killing. Maybe games that revolve around shooting and killing are only a small part of the problem, and the media for publishing detailed and explosive accounts in an attempt to sensationalize and increase circulation, but here is a state governor's response.

Doubt it. Kids (including myself) were playing cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, army, etc. running around "killing" each other with plastic guns for decades before video games. We didnt grow up wanting to actually shoot anyone.

I remember kids in our high school used to bring their hunting rifles and shot guns during hunting season, they would leave them in thier cars/trucks so that they could got hunting right after school... this was in the mid 90s... I dont recall anyone ever shooting anyone ever...

the kids nowadays are simply itching to prove how tough or fearsome they are or get back for being disrespected... long gone are the days you put on boxing gloves and beat each other until both of you were tired... and if you were the bigger guy or the bully, you got one hand tied behind your back. Long gone are the days that the parents knew each other and the teachers as well... hell most people dont even know their own neighbors anymore...

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

I've been mulling this over. Help me with the reasoning.

If 17 kids are killed in a school with a single "assault rifle" and the response is a call to ban them all, and given there are somewhere around 10 million of them in America, shouldn't we be banning Muslims?

Hear me out.

If the logic for not controlling the immigration of Muslims to the United States is that most of them are fine citizens and it's only the "radicalized' few that are perpetrating mass killings, shouldn't the same logic apply to guns? There are 300 million guns in American and an extremely small number of them are "radicalized". Should we eliminate them all?

In America we have 10 million AR15 and if one of them is involved in a statistically insignificant crime, there is a call to ban them all. If a Muslim kills 50 people with a truck in the name of Allah, we demand business as usual with the assertion that just because a small group is bad, we shouldn't judge them all.

The next time someone suggests to me we should ban "assault rifles", it would logically follow we could say "Muslims too" - for all the same reasons - 1 in millions might kill 50 people.

"Well, Nothing bad can happen now."

no

but part of being American is holding American values, which in part is freedom from religion

if they place religion over American values, they have no business here and are not welcome

OK, back on track. The kid doing the shooting just got dumped by his girl. Took a gun to school to shoot her, another kid got caught up in the melee. It was as simple as that. No mass shooting, no AR-15's. Thankfully there was an armed officer that responded and put the kid down with a single shot. Well done. We'll see what the left has to say and how they spin this one.

And another logic question I've been wrestling with...

In response to the Florida school shooting the Governor has proposed a law that would prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from buying a rifle. As it stands now the age limit is 18.

I suppose the logic is that high school aged young adults, are not old enough or developmentally mature enough, to, on average, be trusted with the purchase of a long gun. In short, we don't want 18 to 21 year old individuals buying AR-15s.

Somehow that passes the smell test. Somehow it seems to make sense that a junior in high school should not be allowed to buy an assault rifle - at least without some adult supervision and approval.

Beyond my own personal perception and beliefs, there is a lot of science to suggest that the human brain continues to develop well into the early 20's. There is a considerable amount of reliable research to suggest we aren't fully formed adults until sometime in our 20's.

Now. Here is the question. Using the above logic, should people under the age of 21 be allowed to vote? Given the legal age to buy alcohol is 21, and given the proposed age limit of 21 to buy a gun, we clearly acknowledge that people under the age of 21 are not mature enough for all the rights and responsibilities of an adult. Why then do we then expect them to make adult decisions on the governance of our country? In short, we don't trust them to buy beer but we trust them to pick the President of the United States? We don't trust them with a deer rifle but we trust them to elect Congress?

Someone help me out here.

please stop calling them "assault" rifles... if I assault you with my baseball bat, do you call it an assault bat?

BTW AR-15 does not stand for Assault Rifle...

If we really want to ban anything... lets try banning pistols... they account for nearly all gun related crimes in America...

Alright. You found the one instance where I used the term and didn't put it in quotes. It's is not my term but you have to acknowledge it is used daily. I use the term but suggest it is someone else's undefinable idea. It is something of the same logic as "Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer". My enemies use the term "assault rifle" loosely and often and it is best we keep the term close.

I like your image. Point taken and there is a lot to be learned there. What is to be learned from the below information as it applies to Chicago? How can we use this very simple statistical information to make America and Chicago safer for its citizens?

Car insurance companies rates for younger than 25 year old males are higher for a reason or maybe because they can get away with it. Yet, they are deemed mature enought to join the military. Interestingly enought, had these shootings been by a military vet, the blaming would be pointed at the VA instead of bad parenting. Go figure.

I'm not really sure what your "statics" or Chicago have to do with the school shootings in Maryland and Florida....or anything for that matter. It's not the same thing. The minority groups had nothing to do with what happened there... you can't blame them this time

edit:
Austin police say they got the serial bomber...also NOT a minority.
In other words...minorities are not the only dangerous people in the US...they are just negatively over represented in the media. Just my humble opinion.
