Lately I've been wondering how much of what goes on here at RR is happening via PM. Am I missing 75% of what people are talking about because it's happening via Personal Message and not on the open forum?

That's what happens when you're in the "B" list

Isn't it called "Personal" for a reason?

Not likely that you are missing 75%. PM is a peer to peer conversation, while posting is a broadcast to many . PM would not get you much results when asking a question (just a few would see it) where as posting goes out to thousands, much better chance of a hit.
I am sure already knew this so I am not sure why you would think PM would be happening more than postings.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

If I'm asking a question , I want as many people to see it as possible, rather than send a PM to a individual. And when answering a question I want as many people as possible to see the answer, allowing for any corrections to my response to be posted publicly.
I suppose Mark could answer how much pm traffic is actually going on compared to postings.

I don’t think you’re missing much resulting from the use of the PM function.....

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

I don't know... I just woke up today wondering how much people PM each other. When I click "Start Here" these days, new posts seem to last days on page one. Increasingly I see posts that simply repeat things posted on Facebook (I don't Facebook). The Northwest Michigan thread (one I don't read) has 1/2 a million views. I just started wondering how much modeling discussion is "dark" to me. How much conversation is happening via FB, PM or on threads specific to something outside my scan.

It's just an idle thought. How much PMing is there? For that matter, how much modeling do RunRyder member discuss on Facebook?

If you don't Facebook, how do you know things are repeated?

It's the same five guys re-viewing that thread. It's northern Michigan, we don't get out much in the winter.

I hear there's even another forum site dedicated to R/C helicopters and the freaks who fly them. Seems to be a sign of the times with information available via many avenues, online.

Fair question! Of course I wouldn't but increasingly people say they saw something on Facebook or relay information from a vendor's Facebook page. For instance I recently was reading about a fly-in and the club running it posted: "So far we have 30 pilots confirmed on Facebook." Again, I don't Facebook so the post only made me wonder how much am I missing.

I know that site too! I visit there occasionally. I'm the same person there (wjvail) and joined almost 14 years ago. I see the same trends there which only help me ask the question that is the topic of this thread.

To the question, I can only speak for myself of course. I go weeks without a PM, then have 2 or more every day for a week... most of the time it is "hey how's it going?" chat, but some times it turns into buy and sell. Could have been posted in classifieds, but just thru the course of conversation... I would rather sell to a friend than post an add.

A friend or two occasionally wants to talk about heli related question by PM. I don't know all that much, so more often that not he ends up posting a question anyway.

In my case i only post in heli topics occasionally so my percentage could be as high as 30% but only once in a while. ?

I use the pm system when I wanna talk behind someone's back
Sometimes I use it to argue instead of ruining a thread.
Sometimes I use it for actual private messages when buying stuff ...
I'm pretty sure it is not taking away from new posts.
And the traffic on any site can vary from day to day.

It is what it is

I've been on here for over 10 years. 95% of what goes on in PM is classified negotiation. Another 4% is people that just want to talk on a more personal level--like 'do you know so-and-so' or 'oh, you're from X--do you ever fly at X field?'

the last percent might be someone asking for specific help with an issue. I try to avoid doing one-on-one like that. why not let everyone benefit from the question and answer?

hell, half the time I answer my own questions in the forums because usually I end up with the same question and find my own answer again.

short term memory loss is fun.

if it ain't broke, break it.

Thanks guys... It sounds like most people are using PMs much like myself. I get a few now and then when the topic isn't valuable to everyone. I might get one or two a month, maybe a 1/2 dozen tops. It sounds like PMs are fairly rare for most others too.

Thanks.

I read all your PM and your dirty secrets! I figured out a flaw in RR, over buffer flow and was able to exploit that.

Very funny. Not possible with any recent version of a Apache HTTP web server via port 443. RR server hardware is locked down and is NOT shared.
