Not sure about that. People were slung out like they were stick figures.

I'll speculate that it didn't "go into reverse and speed up" but rather the drive failed, and so did the brakes. A loaded ski lift has a lot more weight (skiers) on the uphill side than the down (nobody) and thus with no drive power, the large differential in weight will cause this.

Gotta wonder about the brake system, though . . . you would think that the brakes would automatically set on either the overspeed, the reversal, etc. etc. . ..

Surprising that they said no one was seriously injured.

I know and good to hear watching it. The one guy looked like he got smashed in the pile of chairs. The people jumping off early ended up being smart, not make it to the to the slingshot and metal pile.

It's real, it has happened a couple of times on the East coast in the last couple of years. If the lift has a major failure of the drive wheel, there are no brakes. I have been a lift attendant and currently ski patrol.

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

I remember the first full size Heli I saw (other than TV), who would forget that, really,,
my father was an electrician and he was very well known in Vt, he worked for many-many rich people threw-out Vt & NY.. well he wired many Ski Lift motors in Killington Vermont,
I was 5 y.o., I was on top of Killington with my father, my father was wiring a Lift motor and I heard this very load noise, I said to a man standing there that the Ski Lift was very load, and he told me the noise was a Heli outside landing, he said it was bring supplies for my father, I went to the open door and there was (what I know today) a Bell 47 landing, I have never forgot about that day or the Bell 47 with it's big round Canopy,
I have told this story before on RR before
