I believe you are suggesting people use PayPal and use the "gift" option to avoid PayPal fees. Is that right? That will be effective at avoiding transaction fees but the buyer gives up all recourse if there is a dispute. PayPal, not unreasonably, asks, how can there be proof of delivery for a gift? If someone were to send you money with the gift option, and if something were to happen where the exchange of fuel wasn't possible, the buyer would have no recourse. At that point the funds truly would be a gift.

I appreciate your effort and time in trying to get our modeling friends fuel. Getting fuel is not always easy these days and any bit helps. There is enough downward pressure on this hobby and anything to help modelers stay airborne is a good thing. I don't want this to be one of those "No good deed goes unpunished" kind of things. Just want you and others to know that "gifting" money is akin to sending cash.

Like every year I'm looking forward to this event. Just a few days to go. In years past there has been bitter cold, brilliant sunshine and everything in between. Any guesses this year?

Any vendors this years? Anyone want to guess at the registered pilot count before this starts?

B'Ham
Had a good time. I've missed the past few years, so it was good to be at this event again. Good to see everyone. Thanks to all of the sponsors, and of course the B'Ham club. Well done.

Thanks to my buddy, wjvail, for bringing out a nice selection of machines. I think he had the only 700XN there, and I know he had the only Carbon SE there, along with a few other MinAir machines. Great showing, and great flying, Bill.

Hey... I just got home sunburned and tired. It was another great Birmingham event. I had doubts when I left the house this morning in the rain but it turned out to be perfect weather for a fly-in.

I always get a chance to see old friends and I always make new ones. This year was no different.

At it's peak this event would have had nearly 200 registered pilots. This year I registered at 10:30 Saturday morning and it looked like I was about number 50 on the list. There is no doubt that attendance is down from the halcyon days past but there are some very unmistakable positives to this. High on the list is that there is much more opportunity to fly - and that's what FLY-inns are for, right? I took my TSA 700N Platinum, X-Cell Tempest w/flybar, X-Cell Tempest FBL, Aligh 700XN, Tarot 450, X-Cell Carbon SE and my old school Raptor 30. I flew all but the Raptor - some of them twice. Simply nirvana. I had a ball.

Next on the list of positives is the ability to spend quality time with people that are often stretched pretty thin when events become too large. I had a chance to spend a reasonable amount of time not only studying the new Synergy 556, but do so while speaking with Matt Botos! Thank you Matt for your time and insight. Matt said there were only about 10 556s currently flying and 8 of them were at Birmingham. Matt also said the model was largely complete and now it's just a matter of getting them packaged and in boxes. It was suggested we might see them available for purchase in a month or two.

I love this event as it gives me some idea of what others are flying and what is popular in the hobby. There was a very solid presence of glow heli's. After years of growth of electric helis, it seemed like there was a very strong showing of nitro helis.

I only saw two flybared helis - and I brought them both. I saw exactly 3 X-Cells - and I bought 'em all. There was only one Raptor of any flavor - and I brought it - and didn't fly it. I only saw two scale heli and Emile had both of them.

Joey... Thanks for the use of the table and EZ-Up. Thanks for spotting. But mostly, thanks for the company.

To the organizers... Thank you once again for putting on such a great event.

Anyway. Enough gassing on. Below are some very random pictures.

Hope to see you all next year.

BHM 2018
I agree, the attendance was certainly a massive reduction since i started attending back in 02 and i am certain the weather payed a major role in that. My 3 hour drive took me through several rain showers and i had my doubts but even after my 1st flight saturday was cut short by a heavy early sprinkle, the rest of the day improved to reveal some ideal flying conditions even for my scale birds one of which i enjoy practicing autos.
Like mentioned, the smaller crowd was on a positive note provisional for more flying opportunities and i didnt observe any accidents the whole day i was there, quite an unusual thing for this event.
Well after missing the last two years it certainly was refreshing to be back at the season opening event and meeting new friends as well as seeing old ones. Thanks to the club, event director and all who put this event together, the gentleman i pitted next to for the hospitality extended to my kids and i and for spotting for me(i forgot his name) and finally Matt and Amy for the synergy 516 kit donated to the raffle which i won. My thanks also goes to my 8yr old for for picking my winning ticket. It makes up for taking so long to pick my ticket during the earlier pilot raffle
I look forward to B'ham 2019.

I had a really good time this year. I spoke to several guys that were not in attendance and they all said it was the weather forecast that kept them home. I plan on going to Huntsville next month also but really enjoyed the Ditch this year.

Gordie... It was good to see you again. It's an odd thing to say but I enjoyed seeing you fly my old Carbon SE. I understand the reluctance to fly someone else's model - I feel the same way. Still, knowing your history with Min-Air, and as "classic MAs" are seen less and less often, the opportunities to see you fly one are becoming more rare... Well, it just seemed right.

Anyway. Odd as it is to say, thanks for taking 'er for a spin.
