It would be nice to see some sort of vetting process for posting in the classifieds. I see quite a few post from users that are minutes or hours old and they never come back to answer any questions or close the ad.
Maybe a minimum of a month membership and/or so many posts before they are allowed to post in classifieds.

What do you guys and gals think?

I don't know if someone needs to be here for a length of time or not, but that will eliminate someone signing up and posting a for sale ad, then selling it locally or even on RR then never coming back and closing the ad.

Maybe an ad that has not seen the OP post in for say a month automatically gets closed. That would be universal even for people that only stop by RR every now and then.

You can usually chase the OP down if you need to!
I think the more ads the better, Just my opinion!

the only 2 problems I have with classifieds is that many people do not mark "Sold" or "Pending"

but I don't get upset about it

Same here, that's the only problem I see.

On various other forums I have seen:
Minimum post count to qualify
All ads must have prices
All ads must have pictures and picture to include the posters name and date in the shot
Pay to advertise
A way to mark item as sold
No trading by PMs - offers to be shown in the thread
Only the OP can add to the thread

My list is from various different forums not all applied at the same time.

The OP was asking for ideas so I put down all I can remember. There is probably more from other sites but without listing all ideas how do you know what will and will not be an improvement or a hindrance?

People need to understand their part:
- Be a good seller
- Be a good buyer

Often times it occurs but we need to monitor and follow up on both sides. If we can’t “mark and item as sold or pending” or “follow up” .. than maybe we shouldn’t be in a transaction. This is a quantity that is borrowed from our everyday unconscious habit.

This doubles for threads in the forums aswell. Ask for help but OP don’t come back to let us know how things went. This is a place of contribution.

Rules can be a good thing when it lets things get accomplished faster. Have a form, so all neccesary information is filled out. This is all to make a transaction go down smoothly.

How many times do we have someone ask one question at a time or we ask a few questions and only 1 question is answered

Rules!!
In my post, I didn't mean that we didn't need rules, but I feel simple is better..
More of a case of common courtesy not being in play.. the way RR is set up has worked for me, just fine, since 2003.
I do follow my listing service and try to return info asap to pm's. I also do make my offers by pm if I am asking for a lower price..to me that is between the buyer and seller. If you want it at the asking, put that in the post and others will know it is probably gone..

We are not referring to you, just overall all.

- communication is the key
- sometimes common sense isn’t so common

This is to help us do what we want to do:
- buy
- sell
- minus the stress

I'm with Doorman.....Things have been just fine since RR first "opened" what, 15 yrs or so ??

No need to change a thing, IMO......

Not having a classified "closed" or "sold" is a minor inconvenience....

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

No, it’s not perfect. But, it works well enough. So, I’m kinda in the “leave well enough alone” camp.

Sure it gets a bit messy. But, honestly how off putting is it? The RR search is fantastic. And, so what if you send out 5 PMs and only 2 people reply? You just figured out the dead ads through no real extra effort.

One idea might be to take a page from CL and auto-expire ads. That would clean it up some. But, I gotta be honest—I’ve had people PM me almost a year after I posted an ad for some small item—and I forgot about it. I wasn’t a hugely motivated seller—maybe it was an ESC I didn’t need any more and forgot about it. Then one day I get a PM out of the blue and sell it. That wouldn’t have happened it it had auto expired.

Of course I’m far from a deadbeat. I always try to stay on top of my PMs and ship/pay as quickly as possible. I know there are worse traders than me. But, I think RR classifieds is better than the off-the-shelf solutions. Mark has done a great job keeping it relevant.

if it ain't broke, break it.

Already implemented after one year classified topics are marked sold.

See page 2 in the following and see no more active after a year...

That's way too long !! May I suggest that 6 months is more than enough time ? If the person has not sold the item by then and the classified gets closed automatically, he/she can easily relist.....

I do still think a minimum membership time maybe a week? Yea, a year is plenty long.

Is be all for shorted “open” times if the RR email system would email you when it’s about to expire so you can opt to keep it open. I don’t think anyone is going to intentionally keep open a sold item. People are just lazy and don’t clean up after the sale. But, like I said earlier, I have sold items that have been up for close to a year when I get a Pm out of the blue.

if it ain't broke, break it.

Sounds like the thread closing after a year is the way it is and likely the way it should stay.
All forums will have items for sale that either are no longer for sale or the sellers is no longer visiting that particular forum, no way to avoid that.
Shut the sale thread down too early and those rare things you want to buy might not show as available.

I vote we leave the classifieds as they are.
