If your gyro has only "gyroscops", then there is no need to "level the boom" for setup.
Hi guys just a question on setting up a heli with a rake forward do you guys level the boom and then setup or leave it flat on the skids. What is the proper way .
It just seems that leaving it on the skids for setup would that make the fbl unit want to pull forward all the time. And if it is level on setup and then put back on the skids would that throw off the fbl unit and want to go back towards you in a hover .
I am working on a KDS 5.5
And no matter if it has gyros only or both gyros and accelerometers, the flight performance of FBL will not be affected by the nose down attitude of the heli when it is sitting on the ground and then taking off.
For setup, your digital pitch gauge has a "Zero" button.
Place the pitch gauge on top of the gyro's case and while it is oriented front-to-back, press the "Zero" button.
If it does not rest flush with the gyro's case, you can use the top surface of the tailboom - they should be the same
Now, all front-to-back blade measurements will be in relation to the gyro / tailboom.
However, while the heli is siting on the ground or on the bench, gyros with both gyros and accelerometers will detect the nose down attitude and naturally add a little "tail down" swash compensation right after initialization.
It is trying to level the heli because it is detecting a "nose down attitude".
MSH Brain 2 does this (I own 4).
I think it is because they have 3 accelerometers and can figure out "true down" based on the angle of gravity (remember, you have 1G pulling on you all the time - that's what keeps your feet on the ground).

For setup, the MSH gyros (Brain / iKON) have a "check mode" in the setup app that will move the swash servos to their center point and ignore the stick if it is within +/-10° of center (collective and cyclic).
This allows you to set the 0° blade angle and the cyclic's maximum throw.
The only "problems" are after the skids touch the ground while landing. Not takeoff and flying.
After the landing, as the head spools down, the heli starts to settle into a "nose down" attitude and the gyro adds "tail down" swash compensation.
This can get a little funky.
You have to be ready for it and keep "flying" the heli until the blades stop.
I've always added a taller rear cross brace to raise the tail and give the tail blades an extra 2" or 3" of ground clearance.
Adding a taller rear strut brace on the Trex 600E / 600N and Trex 700N gives you a nice looking stance on the ground and extra clearance
The SAB Goblins all have the raked stance built in.
