I’m looking at buying a new Align 550X. There are two versions with a $100 price difference. The only difference in the two is one has the DS820 servos and the more expensive has the DS820M servos. Looking up specs, they have the same torque, speed and voltage ratings. So what makes the M servos $100 better?

Thanks, Matt

I think they have an all metal case.

The M series are metal gears.
Which are better provided you use plastic arms.

In a crash the metal gears with plastic arms will survive.
The nylon gears will need to be repaired with every crash.

The M's are worth it on a heli, metal gears are much more robust. Airplanes tend to get away with plastic gears due to the lower loading.

Servo arms become the next part. Out of the ones I have tried, the SAB seem to have a very nice compromise of strength, limited wear yet shear in a hard crash.

You guys must have me on ignore!

They both have metal gears! The 820M simply has an ALL metal case. It's really just bling and not needed plus it adds 10g per servo.

Thanks Richard I looked this time.
You are correct and to add the 820m looks to have titanium gears vs the metal gears on the ds820.

As far as I know, there are no titanium gears in model servos, only titanium coated metal gears.
