Heli ESC's vs. Car ESC's.
Have you noticed car ESC's can handle HUGE current bursts to handle hard accelerations?

Why can't we have heli ESC's like that? When you over gear a heli and use a governor and fly 3D the flight is full of short high current spikes yet our ESC's are more designed for continuous draw like in a plane. This means people choose such high continuous current ESC's to make sure they can handle the huge bursts!

What do the car ESC's have that allow them to handle 500A+ bursts? Is is just bigger capacitors? Can we use much smaller ESC's with added capacitors maybe?

You have to remember, most of those huge amp ratings you see are for 2 and 3s lipo. You are running at least 6, possibly 14.

120 amps at 44.4 volts (12s) is 5,328 watts. This is a continuous rating, peak amp is likely much higher. I know Kontronik ESC's are approximately double peak rated so a 120 could take a 10,000+ watt pull and live to see another day.

500 amp at 11.1 volts (3s) is 5550 watts. This is peak power, right before it bursts into flames. Likely you could never hit this, if you did, the ESC could take it for about a half a millisecond. The numbers are likely inflated anyways. How would you ever tell?

Current is the killer not the power so the voltage doesn't matter.

I just wondered what was different in the car ESC's to allow such high peaks. I've seen 120A car ESC with 760A peak rating!

Maybe the car ESC peak specs are for 1-2 seconds whereas the helis ESC peak specs are for 30 seconds?

First off...pls supply a link to said car ESC as well as to whatever acro ESC you are comparing to.

Reason being...size.

More power is from more MOSFETs, not CAPs.

CAPs are there mainly for ripple "filtering" from induction. Nothing to do with ESC power output. Notice where CAPs are in the circuit layout. Yes, at the beggining.

IF larger CAPs implied more power from smaller ESC, you would have seen such in production.

Interestingly, if you were to run ESC explicitly at WOP, you might get away with not needing CAPs at all...but not really, just smaller ones.

Car esc are heavier because all of them use heat sinks. They are made to take the heat, wattage, current.
All esc have max cell count. Don't exceed this limit.
Same for motors.....
As for dollar to value of the ESC always chose for the application.
There's no magic formula....

Always compare the wattage

No you misunderstood. Being a lower voltage capable ESC doesn't mean it can then handle higher current draw. If that were the case then my 3s 40A ESC in my 450 should be rated much higher than that! And what if I ran it on 2s, could I run even higher current through it?! Do you see?
